Easy instructions for new mdmbers to create passwords?
J_Olivia Catlady
Once a member has joined and hasn't created a password right at the beginning, what's the easiest way for them to request one later on? We have some members (yahoo transferrees and others) who do everything by email and say they have no idea how to get onto the web. Time has passed and I've forgotten the details of this. Thanks.

J,
Once a member has joined and hasn't created a password right at theI would recommend that they go to any Groups.io page (its home page, or your group's home page) and click the Log In button/link at the top right. / On the "Please Log In" page click the "Forget your password?" link. Then provide their email address and click the "Email Link To Log In" button. They should watch their email (including Junk/Spam folders) for a log in email from Groups.io. Clicking through the link in that message will bring them to their Profile page where they can set a password. That link will also log them in to Groups.io for 30 days (or until they log out); so they may put off setting a password if they don't want to choose one now. They can repeat the above process anytime, so there's no hassle if they accidently log out or let it expire without having set a password. Or, They can forget about setting a password, and use the "Email me a link to log in" button whenever they need to Log In. Shal |
Hi I wrote these instructions - they could be edited. Accessing our group¡¯s site, archive and files: You know you can email to the group, but you can also go to the website to post, search, read any or all email (posts). ? You will need to log in. First, you must set up your password on Groups.io if you haven¡¯t done so yet. - Go to the group homepage e.g.?/g/GroupManagersForum/ - Put in your email address and click on Email me a link to log in - Go to your email and click on the link in the email sent to your email account (might be in your Junk mail by mistake) - On the homepage of our group (with a photo ---- <edit this>), click on your name in the top right corner. - Click on Profile - Add a password for future use (and remember it!) - You¡¯re all set. You only have to do this once. Frances |

I just transferred a group that contains a lot of older guys. They're at least marginally computer literate, but not real sure of themselves. These are important members because these are the ones with the historical knowledge and the stories to tell, so I don't want to lose them. To that end I've created a detailed step-by-step process to log into the web page and set a new password for the first time. I'll include them following this note. I have one member who's tried to get logged in several times, but he says when he clicks on the link, he always winds up back on the main page (the elephants). He understands the immediacy issue, and responds as soon as he gets the login message. I'm suspecting he's having some kind of delay so that he's not opening the link until after the Cinderella half hour has expired. Has anyone else run into this? Does anyone have any ideas about this. I thought about taking this to Mark, but I thought I'd air the problem here first to see if anyone had any ideas. Dano Below are the instructions he's working from: 1) Go to . 2) Click on the blue ''Log in'' box in the upper right. 3) Enter your email address in the ''Email Address'' box. *** DO NOT enter any password!! *** 4) Click on "Forget your password?" under it. =[ The next three steps may or may not occur. If they do, just work through them. If they don't, you'll be taken to 5). ]= 4a) This will open a new window titled ''Send Log In Link''. 4b) Enter your email address 4c) Then click ''Email link to log in''. 5) That will give you a message that says ''An email has been sent to you with a link to log into your account.'' 6) Close the window and groups.io. 7) Check your email right away. Within about five minutes or so you should get a message titled ''Link to log into Groups.io''. If you don't find it after 10 minutes, check your spam filter. 8) Open the message and click on the link. NOTE: The link is only good for a half hour. If you get the message but it's been too long and the link has expired you can just start again at 1). 9) The link will take you to your subscriptions page at groups.io. 10) On the same page, near the right end of the blue bar is your username or email address. Click on the down triangle following it. 11) This will open up a menu with your email address, the option ''Account'' and the option ''Logout''. 12) Click on ''Account'', and you will be taken to your master Login page. Your email address will show in the ''Email'' box. Below it is a ''Password'' box. Enter a password of your choice. It must be at least six characters long. Try to make a good password, and WRITE IT DOWN or otherwise remember it. 13) Then click on ''Change Password''. You have now set your password, and you should remain logged in for a number of days unless you log out. 14) If you get logged out, you can log in by clicking the ''Log in'' box to the right on the blue bar and putting in your email address and password that you wrote down. |

D R,
? ? ? ? ? Thanks much. ?You may want to simplify the starting part of your instructions. ?I took material from earlier suggestions and boiled it down to: 1.??????? In your web browser, go to the Groups.io main site login page:? /login 2.?????? Find the ¡°Forgot your password?¡± link and activate it. 3.?????? A page with a single edit box, e-mail address will open.? Enter your e-mail address in it. 4.????? Navigate to the one and only button on the page, ¡°Email Link to Log In,¡± and activate it. 5.?????? Watch your e-mail, including your spam/junk box, for a message from Groups.io that will contain a link you need to activate that takes you to your Groups.io profile page where you set your password.? This is the password you¡¯ll use to log in to any Groups.io group webpage where you wish to do something, such as changing your preferences, that requires you to be logged in to do.? You are, at this stage, actually logged in. |

Thanks for your comments. I will consider some edits. I recognize the instructions I offered were overly detailed. As I explained, I'm dealing with members who are still very uncertain about the internet and computers. The groups are history-focused, and some valuable members are in their 80s and 90s. I wanted to offer them something that was as detailed as possible and that let them feel more confident. Those in the group who are internet savvy found the process quite intuitive and didn't need any instructions at all. Dano ?
