A few questions about transferring a group
Hello I've been thinking of transferring?our group for months now. I have a couple of questions: 1. Are you able to change the name of the group on transfer so that it keeps the same membership but the new group has a new name? 2. There are two moderators (I am one) and a group owner. We are all in touch with each other. The group owner cannot access the group and hasn't been able to for a long time. We can't find a way to transfer ownership to one of us. Can we move to Groups IO in this situation i.e. the two moderators are active the but the group owner is locked out? Best wishes Jill? |

开云体育Sure. The new group can have any name. ?And as long as you can contact the person, you can invite them to the new group or they can just join it. If they’re still a member of the yahoo group, they’ll be transferred anyway, even if they can’t currently access the yahoo group.?On Mar 16, 2018, at 12:01 AM, The Ingle family. <inglefamily@...> wrote:

p.s. Either moderator can invite the transfer agent to the group and start the transfer process. It doesn't need to be the owner. Once you get over to , you can set up whoever you want to be moderators and owners.

Jill,
The group owner cannot access the group and hasn't been able to for aIt depends on what privileges the moderators have. The first step is that the transfer agent has to become a member of the group. If the group's membership is restricted then you need a moderator with the ability to "Invite and add members" or "Approve pending members". What may be more troublesome is whether anyone can promote the transfer agent to moderator. A moderator can do that if he/she has the privilege to "Add, remove, and change moderator privileges" To see if you have the privilege, go to the Manage Members page, Moderators tab, and click on the other moderator's row, anywhere except at the checkbox. If that opens up an Edit Member dialog showing the Moderator Privileges then you have the privilege to change them. And also to change the Role field between Member and Moderator. If nothing happens, you do not. If the transfer agent cannot be promoted to moderator then it cannot retrieve the members' email addresses from the Manage Members list. I don't know if the copy operation is possible in that case. Shal -- Help: /static/help More Help: /g/GroupManagersForum/wiki Even More Help: Search button at the top of Messages list |

开云体育I had the same problem, the YG list owner had a falling out with YG several years ago and the two moderators carried on for over ten years without contact.? I set up a new list last July on groups.io? I invited [email protected]? BUT I couldn't make that new member a moderator (and neither could the other moderator).? So with the aid of some list members, this January we finally found the YG list owner and he agreed to transfer the list and made me a co-owner.? Immediately I made [email protected] a moderator and started the transfer; it completed three days later. ken clark www.shastasprings.com

开云体育Ken, ? The transfer was completed transfer three days later. That was wonderful response time. How long ago was that? I made [email protected] a moderator and am still waiting the start of the transfer. ? Bob schechter ? For this very reason, our Yahoo! group had two (then three) co-owners. When one died, the other was hard to get hold of, but having the third made it possible to continue and eventually transfer the group. We wouldn't have it any other way, so immediately upon creation of the new group, we made a co-owner of an trusted and active member.

I like to have at least 3 owners and registering one of my other Email addresses as owners.

Thank you for all your replies about this and apologies for the delay in my reply. It seems the two moderators (of which I am one) do not have the privileges that Shal and others say we will need to transfer the group. We are still trying to get access?for the group owner but just to be clear - from what you have said, if we can't do that we simply can't transfer the group. I'm presuming our only option would then be to start a new IO group and ask people to requestion to join. Am I correct? ? Best wishes Jill? |

开云体育Yes. But here’s an idea. You could make your group a ‘premium group’ for one month for $10, which would enable you to ‘direct add’ all the members (I.e., email addresses) you want to, without having to issue invitations and wait for acceptance. If you ask nicely, Mark may not even charge you the one-time fee, due to the unfortunate and unique circumstances. ??On Mar 19, 2018, at 1:55 AM, The Ingle family. <inglefamily@...> wrote:

Perhaps the transfer method I used would be of use to you.? I downloaded my entire group list from yahoo into a database, but you can use Excel if you don't have Microsoft Access.? That gave me a column with all the email addresses.? I simply copied and pasted that into the box for sending invitations.? It was very easy, and saved me the time waiting for a transfer.? I lost some members who chose not to join the new group, but I'm reasonably sure many of those were bad addresses, and were no longer participating anyway.

Good idea. The same could be done using Direct Add, if they choose to go that route.

I did the same thing in announcing about moving a group, it worked well with one hitch:? I had 1250 members, and my gmail account limited me to 500 or 1000 emails/day!? So it took a few days t tell everyone but that didn't impact the actual move. You do have to have access to the Yahoo email addresses, which most yahoo moderators should have. Mike Conder |

I may be tilting at windmills, but it has been sometime since this thread started and I'm hoping for new possibilities.
A group of members of a Ygroup are trying to move it to groups.io. The owner of the group has abandoned it, and there is only one moderator, who cannot make additional moderators. I'm wondering if the transfer agent can be set to use the sole moderator's credentials to perform the transfer? Randy Wright |

I'm wondering if the transfer agent can be set to use the sole moderator's credentials to perform the transfer?Does the remaining moderator have permissions to invite members and promote members to moderator? If yes then you don't have a problem; just proceed as normal. There is no "setting" for anything on the transfer agent; it just works once Mark tells it to. If nobody can invite and then promote the transfer agent then I'm afraid your Yahoo Group will simply founder. The "simple" option in these circumstances is to post on the Yahoo group with details of how to apply to the new group hosted on Groups.io, or if you can download a list of existing members use the "Invite" function in Groups.io (or even Direct Add if you have a Premium Group) to get them in. Files and Photos can be downloaded from the Yahoo Group and manually uploaded to Groups.io but their attribution to their originators will be lost. Note that that is potentially a lot of work. Mark would have to decide if he's willing to do the extra work involved.? Your best bet would be to contact [email protected] with the details, but expect a lengthy delay for a reply during this busy time.
