member got deleted

a member got deleted because it went into her spam. This is not good if this happens. These are older women and not sure they will be able to deal with this.

I really wanted iogroups to work for my group. Not sure it is right for us. Now not sure this member will rejoin.

This has happened to two of my members. Is there a way to turn this feature off?

Anita,

a member got deleted because it went into her spam.
Certain email services require that Groups.io (or any mailing list) cease sending message to a user if that user marks a message from the list as spam.

When that happens*, Groups.io unsubscribes the member and sends them an email with a "resume your subscription" link in it. Clicking the link puts the member back into the group.

These are older women and not sure they will be able to deal with
this.
So the rule is: don't mark group messages as spam, even if you don't like the content. Take your content concerns up with the group admins.

*In some cases, I believe AOL was one of them, it was observed that if a group message lands automatically in the spam folder then the user must mark it as "not spam", else if the user deletes it, or lets the service automatically delete it, that will also trigger unsubscription. That's bad behavior on the part of the email service, IMO, but not much Groups.io can do about it.

The service that starts with A and ends with L (and has been known to auto-delete posts that mention them, on the assumption that any mention will not be favorable) is notorious for this behavior. Many list emails are dumped into the spam folder, and, unless the sender marks them as not spam, the post is reported. At that point, their rules require the sending ISP to unsubscribe them.

Now that Verizon mail is being run by said ISP, the same rules may also apply to those addresses.

Both Yahoo and A..L use DMARC, which breaks email lists that are not configured to deal with it. When Yahoo first started using it, Yahoo Groups was not configured for it, and Yahoo subscribers of Yahoo Groups had their subscriptions messed up.

Does anyone know if the service that starts with A and ends with L has a whitelist that would stop members from experiencing this problem?

Hello Anita,
?
There is no way to stop members that delete all of their spam mail and not looking at it, to stop them from being removed as a member from Groups.io.? The problem does not originate with Groups.io.? The receiving email service marks the Groups.io email as spam.
?
All your members have to do is to mark the emails from Groups.io as not being spam.?
?
If your members do continue to delete all spam,. when a Groups.io email is deleted as spam the member immediately receives a link for the member to click on to immediately reinstatement them to the group.

This has been discussed extensively on beta@ and Mark never mentioned anything about a legal requirement, so I doubt that's it. Search there for FBL or Feedback to find those threads. I think this was the first:

I would guess that Y! is complying, but their
emails just aren¡¯t flagged as spam as often.
I think Yahoo Groups does not implement any Feedback Loops. That's because I've never heard of a Yahoo Groups member being removed for that reason, and because the mechanism itself, as I understand it, is a relatively recent development (newer than the end of Yahoo Groups development).

I'm hypersensitive on this. I got wrapped around the axle with cautious corporate lawyers when some software I designed could be configured to send out surveys that a lawyer thought could be used as a commercial solicitation. Can't remember the outcome, but I lost sleep over it.
I'm not a lawyer, so my opinion doesn't count, but it is plausible to me that ignoring spam feedback could be construed as ignoring an opt-out request, which is prohibited by some laws, like Canada, Washington, and California. However, all the spam laws I've read only apply to commercial email, which I would imagine doesn't appear often on groups.io.

Just pulling these comments into this topic.

This was discussed on here recently. The solution is not to mark
messages as spam or train her ISP not to do it in the first place. It
is not groups.io problem, they are just doing what they are told.

If you pay $10 for one month (to make your group Premium for a month) then you'll be able to add members to that group during that month.
