reading exported Groups.io group data

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear in the midst of the Yahoo fiasco: I meant the exported group data from Groups.io, not Yahoo. I've changed the subject to clarify too.

G.io has an option to download various group data, which is useful especially for larger groups that can't stay in the paid 10GB or free 1GB storage limit. I tried it out for one of my groups, and requested the member list, messages, group description, and cover photo. I got files back in multiple formats, a couple JSON, an MBOX, and the photo just says FILE. So once downloaded, how do I access those files? Is there one program that can open them all, or does this require multiple programs?

Thanks so much.

You've obviously unzipped the file if you can see all of those.? json and mbox are plain text files.? I'd save the originals someplace so they'll be safe.? On copies, try adding a .txt extension.? The photos should have the extension that was on them when they were uploaded.? If the person that uploaded didn't give it one, you can try graphic programs to see if one of them works.

Ah, there it is! I could open all those easily with Notepad, and the photo with GIMP. Thank you, Duane.

Of course the files are not actually readable in Notepad, with all the various code interspersed (unless you're a coder, I'm sure, but alas, I'm just a baby geek who doesn't know how to do that).

I seem to remember that MBOX is a format accessible through one of the mail clients, like Thunderbird. If that's correct, can anyone tell me how I would open such files in a mail client? Years ago I transferred what I believe were MBOX files between two versions of Thunderbird, but it was somewhat complex, and I have no clear memory of how I did that, and don't think it would be relevant to just plain files like this, since it involved transferring between email accounts..

I assume the JSON files would also be readable without the code in some program, but other than a mail client? I've never worked with that format, ever, but I thought someone had mentioned somewhere that there is some kind of a viewer that can display the data without the code.

Very nice to have that option in Groups.io. I think all of our lives would be much easier right now if Yahoo had allowed the downloading of group messages all along.

For Thunderbird you need this add on to import mbox files:

Then follow the instructions on this page:

Rename your messages file to have the .mbox extension, make a note of where it is on your drive, then scroll down on the page above to the section "Import MBOX File in Thunderbird" and follow the instructions.

You should then have a new message folder with the same name as your mbox file.

Thanks, Bill.

I will try this in the next couple of days.

Much appreciated.

How exactly would one go about downloading group data from Gio (e.g. to create a message archive outside of Gio)?

Jerry -- Look for the Export Group Data button at the top of your Settings page.
