We are looking to transfer from Yahoo! Groups to Groups.io and we have a couple of questions for privacy purposes.?
Yep. I'm surprised no one has asked about this before now.
1. If we choose to NOT transfer the "Members" data, will the messages show with the Yahoo! Alias still or will it be substituted with "Unknown"/"Anonymous" or will it use the Group.IO account the messages are transferred to? Also will these messages/threads still be able available to post new information??
Pretty sure it will still show the Yahoo alias ("Display Name", in groups.io parlance).
It's kinda hard to explain without an example. It's entirely possible for two subscribers in your group to have the same Display Name. In groups.io -- and probably Y!G too, -- message "ownership" is actually tracked by an invisible number called a "posterid", not by any text string.?
So if you leave the members behind during a transfer, that message will no longer be associated with any "posterid" within groups.io, because such an account does not exist. For example, you won't be able to "find" other posts by that person by searching on "all posts by this member." But the
text metadata?will remain in the message base, whether the associated member is migrated or not. Specifically, the from address is not munged or changed to "anonymous."
I hope that made sense.
2. If we choose to NOT transfer the "Members" data, will any email accounts from Yahoo! Groups be migrated over? So for example if someone?s email account is found in the "message history" of a thread or the "Activity Log" (that would possibly be migrated from Yahoo! Groups)??
The Yahoo activity log is not migrated. Also, the transfer agent will not parse message bodies for email addresses, remove member information, phone numbers, etc from quoted text, or anything like that. If that concerns you, you'd probably be ahead of the game just creating a new group and starting afresh.
Thank you for your time and we understand that you are receiving many more questions then a week ago so we will be patient :)?
I just hope that I somehow managed to answer your question. If not, it might be useful to know exactly what might be concerning you.
