I searched for this answer pretty exhaustively, I thought, and could find nothing. For example, this site has both #hashtag and #hashtags which could/should be consolidated. I started this new topic here with a question mark and backed out to explore what the Alias field was for in the Edit Hashtag dialog. I thought it might be a way to include the topics under that hashtag in the filtered results under another, and expected the dialog to allow the addition of more aliases. Turns out that Alias is an alias for "Move", i.e., move the topics with that hashtag to another. Having done the Update of the hashtag parameters with the Alias field filled, it now has no topics and can be safely deleted. Ergo, the merge or combine that I was looking for.??

Which field gets moved, and which field remains unmoved? I.E., if I have a hashtag #green and I put hashtag #blue in Alias, to the #blue tags wind up merged with #green (and nothing remaining in #blue), or is #green absorbed into #blue?

Also, is the process reversible? By clearing the Alias field, are the messages and hashtags restore to the original condition?

Using your example of #green with an alias of #blue:? All messages that have the hashtag #green will have that hashtag changed to #blue.? You can do this for more than one hashtag so they all get changed to the alias.? If you later change your mind, you can remove the alias, but the ones that have been changed do not revert to their previous hashtag.? You'd have to change those topic hashtags manually.

A message is displayed confirming one will be moved to the other but it could be a bit clearer. I might flag that in beta as a suggestion.

You'd have to change those topic hashtags manually.

And for clarity, that is done through Edit Topic and you need to be a moderator with the Edit Archive privilege set to use it:

Just created an alias for a hashtag and that automatically transferred everything to my new improved hashtag. Nice! Love those hashtags.
