$110 transfer question about attachments.

I’m cool with the 110 cost to transfer and the yearly cost, but I have one question about the paid transition.

Will the ATTACHMENTs to each post come over during the transfer? I’m asking because if a member goes to an older post, and expects to see an attachment mentioned in the post, it would be bad for that to be missing.

Also with SubGroups, is there a way to make both the main and sub visible from a dashboard?

Thanks for what you do!

I saw this in the FAQ, but it didn’t really answer my concern.?

4. What gets transferred using the Transfer Agent?

Your messages and most other accessible YahooGroup content are transferred to your Groups.io group.?

Attachments don't get transferred.

Groups.io can transfer message archives (without attachments, however), photos, files, links and databases. Calendar entries are not copied at this time. Subscribers (members) are also transferred, maintaining ownership of each message and other group content.

Source:?
/yahootransfer

Subgroups - no dashboard that I know of. You can see a feed of latest posts by going to Your Groups, Manage My Subscriptions.

Assuming you want to transfer over from YG, everything you had there except attachments. The success of the transfer depends on how stable YG is, and right now it seems Y is unstable at times. I transferred my group January 2018, and I had my new group up and running in about three days.

So we will LOSE the attachments to posts during the transfer?

I have a full backup using PG offline, Can that assist in the paid transition to preserve all the attachments and files?

Yes, that information is stated in the transfer information, /yahootransfer under What We Transfer.

Does the full backup from PG Offline help keep attachments? Can your service use that data to make a full transfer?

No.

OK, thanks for the simple one word Responce of NO.?

So is there a paid service above the $110 that could port that data over? Or is there an explanation why that can not be done? I’m NOT a coder, but if PG Offline can pull that data and display it in that application, why can it not also be imported here to retain that relationship of attachments to comments?

Out site is a support site for vintage aircraft and many use Photos to explain issues, so all of that will be lost coming to this platform

No.

It has never been an option within the transfer process, and I believe if it could have been done, Mark would have put it in place a long time ago.

Hi,

There is an option to archive this yourself with some open source tools but you have to be knowledgeable in shell scripting, python, etc. (Or know somebody who will put in the effort for you.) I am currently using this script as a basis to archive some groups:??It requires a lot of tweaking/handholding, and downloading attachments is still a bit of a problem. (But I’m getting there…)

BTW, Bruce (and others), thanks for all the effort you put into this group. Much appreciated, I learned a lot in the last few days from reading your answers!

I am not familiar with PG Offline. The script I mentioned basically downloads everything and gives you a folder structure like this:

groupname/
groupname/databases
groupname/email
groupname/files
groupname/photos

From that point it is up to you what to do with this. In the email directory, there are separate files for each message (plus their attachments), but there is no way to import this in the ?system. You could send each message again to the new group, but then all would be dated wrong, wrong sender (you) and it would be very hard or impossible to get the threads correct. So best would be to just upload all this to the files section I think.

thanks just trying to learn

Me too, last few days were busy. :)

I don't know if people remember, but yahoo wiped all saved attachments a few years ago so you wouldn't be getting anything from before that date (as I found out to my horror last night having completely forgotten that callous act)

A corollary to that is the question: "How can I restore a lost attachment to a message in groups.io?"

?That assumes that the attached file can be found:
  • Yahoo can list messages with attachments so they can be downloaded one-by-one
  • PG Offline can batch download attachments along with messages (curious, if PBO can get the attachments, why can't Easy Transfer?)
  • The message author or other member may have the file
  • It may be found somewhere else in the cloud
I just started looking into this question when I saw your topic...
