Length of Group description in Groups Directory #suggestion

I looked up for my group using the Find a Group tab and I noticed that my group description was abruptly cut off, showing just a line and a half, while most groups had (more or less) longer descriptions. Where did I go wrong?

In general, group descriptions in the Groups Directory vary in length. I wonder if it would be possibile to have a set length, e.g. only the first 3 or 4 lines of a group description are shown in the Directory.
This would grant all groups equal visibility and give a tidier appearance to the Directory.

After a little roaming through the directory, it looks like the amount of information included depends on the formatting of the description.? The 'fancier' it is, the less that is included.? A simple text description has up to about 3 1/2 to 4 lines, an html description has less.? As a guess, I'd say it's a limited number of characters, including any formatting information.? A rough test says it's about 400 characters.

I am afraid this is not the case. I had just a couple of words in bold in the old description, I've edited the description into plain text but the result is the same.

My group description shown in the Directory was (with HTML formatting) and still is (plain text) about 183 characters spaces included.
Besides, although I erased all formatting, one word still appears in bold.

Hi Marina,
I just experienced the same thing, I changed our description & it didn't change in the directory. I cleared the cache & cookies in Chrome & Firefox. After that, the description changed.

The 400 character limit I mentioned includes all the characters used for any html formatting commands, although they are hidden.? The single word Hello, when set for 18 pt Helvitica Neue and Bold, takes 60 characters because of the formatting.

Thank you, Paul. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to work for me.
I turned my description into plain text, cleared cache and cookies (making sure to clear all Groups.io cookies) from Firefox and restarted my computer.
But the description looks just the same, with that 6 letter word standing out in bold.
Sounds like a bug to me.

Apart from that single stubborn word, the rest of the group description is now in very plain text but, when seen in Directory, is still far shorter than most descriptions.

In the formatting toolbar of the description, open the Advanced Toolbar (rightmost button, three horizontal lines) and in the advanced toolbar click on the Source code button (rightmost button, <> ).

That will pop up a dialog box with the raw HTML of your description. Look in there for HTML tags (codes, abbreviations, and sometimes long-ish phrases enclosed in < and > ). Most likely that stubborn word will be surrounded some pair of tags that marks it as bold.

Remove all of the tags except <p>, </p>, and <br />. Or, you can just remove them all, but then after you Ok your text will be all run together as a single paragraph and you'll have to put your paragraph and line breaks back in.

Sorry, there is no Source code button in my advanced toolbar. I had already desperately looked for it. There is a "Clear formatting" button, but it is useless.

Maybe it has to do with my settings?

I have another small group I created to test Groups.io.
The group description in Directory has the same problem: same word in bold.
For misterious reasons, in that group the advanced toolbar shows the Source code button.
I checked the description source code as you suggested and there is no trace of HTML, tags or anything like that.
The description is in plain text. But the description shows one word in bold.

I feel so stupid.

That's odd. I found that group in the directory and I don't see any bold-faced word. In fact, it doesn't look like the directory shows any formatting that the group Description might have.

Or maybe you've gone on to other testing by now, as that group's Description looks very short (one sentence) and no formatting also on the group's home page:

If you're still seeing one of those words in bold, maybe there's a plug-in or other software affecting what your browser is showing you. Otherwise I don't know how to explain it.

Many thanks for your help, Shal.

That group description was meant to be short, so length it's not problem in that case.
My other group description, on the other hand, was meant to be a bit longer (not excessively), but Groups Directory shows just a line and a half of text.
From that cut off description it isn't even clear what the group is about.
I turned both descriptions into plain text days ago, so there was no further testing going on, what you saw is the actual text.
Can you have a look at my second group, please? Search for Biblit in Groups Directory

I tried visiting Groups Directory with Microsoft Edge and then with my smartphone (searching with Google and Chrome). Even with my husband's Mac I still see that word in bold (plus the strangely shortened text).
Maybe something irreparable happened between me and Groups.io when I created the two texts.
I don't really know how to sort this out.
Food for wizard's thought.

I think I've finally figured out where the one BOLD word is coming from.? When you search for a word in the directory, that word will be in bold on the results page.? Now we just need to find out why your description is being truncated at about 170 characters...

Duane, you ARE a wizard. It sounds very much like Columbus' egg, but you did find the answer.

Now we just need to find out why your description is being
truncated at about 170 characters...
If you sort out that one, I'll build you a monument.

Many thanks,

I am bringing up this topic again, just to know if anyone else has the same problem.
My group description in Group Directory is truncated, which makes it difficult to understand what the groups is about.
I haven't been able to understand the reason.
Should I report this as a bug in Beta?

Marina

Marina, I'm not sure it's a "problem".? I think this is simply how Mark has coded a search result to display (ie, "display first 120 characters in search results from group description").? When I use the Search function, and search using any old key word, all the search results display exactly the same as you've described:? About 1 1/2 lines are displayed from each group's main page description.? In fact, they are all truncated or cut off at the same number of characters.? So, I think is is just "how it is".? I don't think this is an issue, frankly.? If someone is interested in finding out more, and reading the full list's description, they would just click on that search result.? And, you're correct about the bolded word or words:? That word or words are bolded because they represent your search word(s).? However, I think what WOULD be helpful in the Search results would to add three periods at the end of the truncation, to indicate "there's more of a description", or that the description is, indeed, truncated.? Easy coding string to add, so maybe something to suggest on the Beta forum??

Thank you, Patty. I didn't realize that the Search results was meant to display only a fixed characters description. Maybe because the text was abruptly truncated without any indication I thought it was a bug.
