How would they reply to a message if they weren't a member and hadn't received it directly? I would treat it that as they replied to an obvious mailing list they wish to be subscribed.

Remember that Groups uses the common noun "group" to refer to ALL groups - both main and subgroups. If you are in the settings for a subgroup, then whatever you are seeing referred to as "group" is
