ZWO ASIAIR Plus

HI
I would be very grateful for any advice given.
I have a old Losmandy GM8 mount controlled by a Gemini one, which has been updated with a new processor.
I would like to know if anybody has used the ZWO ASIAIR plus with this type of mount and if so how did you connect it to the mount and what cables did you use?
Thank you
Ken??

> Gemini one, which has been updated with a new processor.

Does that mean you replaced it with a G-2?

Hi David

You put the chip in for me some months ago, I think it was to version 4 if my memory is correct, therefore its still version one?

Do you know if ASIAIR will work with my mount.

Thank you

So, is what you meant to say that your G-1 has the Gemini-1 L4 V1.05 EPROM installed …

?

Saying you have an updated processor means something quite different.

Thanks David, sorry I’m not very technical.
Do you know if the ASIAIR, can control this mount, as it has the male and female pined sockets on the hand box and Gemini control box? I might need some other form of cable.
Thank you for your help.

Sorry I can’t help with that – maybe some of the other netizens can help?? Any ASIAIR gurus here?

Looking at the information online I suspect the answer is that it cannot control a Gemini-1 over the USB ports, but probably might be able to communicate over the ethernet via an ethernet switch do so.

I never finished setting it up as I got a smaller mount for the purpose I was planning on. My gm8 is circa 94 with Gemini 1 L4. I never finished with the ASIAIR controlling the pointing. I had the ASIAIR plugged into the guider and it functioned perfectly. I was planning on using skyfi (or similar) to interface for mount control.? With what I had at the time, I performed the goto with the Gemini, then had the ASIAIR plan run from there.?

Should also say I used the polar alignment routine from the ASIAIR with the mount no problem. Doing about a 45deg slew in ra via the Gemini hand controller.?

?Hi Ken,

Yes the Gemini -1 works fine with the ASIAIR Plus and Pro controllers. From the ASIAIR side you'll l need the usual USB to RS232 converter cable just as you would use with a regular laptop or PC with a traditional USB type A connector - the rectangular one. I can only recommend this one brand and model converter which is known to work correctly 100% the part is called an ATEN UC232A and yes I know they cost more. It is best to buy them online directly from ATEN to avoid counterfeits.?

At issue is the other brand USB converters may or may not work correctly when cabled using the standard Losmandy Gemini 1 RS232 cable. The Losmandy cable is the correct pin out to base your RS232 to USB converters on because an it is the Losmandy standard and known to work.?

Once you have these parts gathered up and connected the ASIAIR will work as expected. I highly recommend that you verify the Gemini 1 has been updated to the last firmware EPROM L4 V1.05 and that the ASIAIR has the latest version of the app? v2.12 which will also update your ASIAIR hardware to firmware v10.92 automatically once the app is downloaded and installed and you connect to the ASIAIR over Wi-Fi.?

The rest is easy.?

Hi Chip

Thank you that’s great information, so the cable which I use to connect my Gemini one to my laptop can be used to connect the ASIAIR? to the mount.

My Gemini has been updated to EPROM L4 v1.05.

Do you know if you can use a inexpensive tablet (?150) or do you have to have a expensive IPad or Galaxy tablet. I read you need 8GB RAM to get the best out of the tablet.

Thank you once again for your advice it is much appreciated.

Other USB to RS232 converters work I just do not know which ones exactly other than the ATEN product used with Losmandy sourced or equivalently pinned Gemini 1 RS232 cable.?

There was a minimum hardware requirements list that ZWO posted on the FB group ()?some time ago, nearly a year ago in anticipation of the new release of the V2.x ASIAIR app for Andriod and iOS. If you are an Android user you really need a minimum of a 4GB RAM not 8GB RAM and 64GB internal storage for a tablet but more RAM and storage lets the app run much faster. This makes the tablets a lot more expensive but the large screen is a lot prettier to look at when previewing or using the ASIAIR for EAA. I just use my Google 7 Pro phone as it has more RAM than needed. BUT for imaging use and EAA sharing at public outreach events the bigger screen produces more oos and ahhs.?
