DIGITAL DRIVE SYSTEM
Hello everyone. I had the opportunity to get a G-11 Losmandy and with the accessories it had, there is this mechanism that I have no idea how to use. If there is any manual or instructions, I would appreciate it if you tell me how to locate it or download it from the internet. Preferably in Spanish. Thank you all ![]() |

Here is the link to the G11 492 DD system...follow link for.? Although is pretty much the same.??? I don't think there is much in the way of fitting instructions of the 492 to the mounts....?? I do have some extra info on using etc...mostly little hints and explanation notes that might help if you want them....email me.? I don't have motor fitting instructions but that would be pretty self explanatory.?? Basically these days most users adapt a system to their mounts with gives them a "goto" capability from a computer or planetarium program ...and much more aka a computer used to command the system and mount.? The 492 DD is considered a "push to mount" aka push to the target you want to look at or image....and it will track and autoguide from there.? The OnStep is an Arduino control system much more up to date than the 492DD (the 492 DD has been around since the 90's if not earlier). ? I think it uses different stepper motors than the OnStep as the older Losmandy steppers are not capable of "Faster Slew"? rate movements.?? The OnStep is more modern feature rich.?? But the 492 is still loved and used by many and will serve you well! Cheers....FWIW Brendan -- Brendan |
Thank you very much for your contribution and I am sure it is very useful and will help me to know the handling and operation of the mount. It is a pleasure to be in this group where you always learn something. Thank you for the time you have dedicated to me. ![]() El vie, 8 jul 2022 a las 1:58, Brendan Smith (<brenatlilydale@...>) escribi¨®: This is the manual for the |
Welcome M!
First there are other Losmandy mount related user groups on this server.? The largest groups covering the standard Losmandy built mounts are these groups. There are some small special interest off shoot groups related to Losmandy mounts but at this point I suggest joining these basic group(s) appropriate for your mount controller type and interest.? ? This group is Gemini_users - for original Gemini-1 discussion? Gemini-II - specifically for Gemini-2 discussion?
Gemini_ASCOM_driver - Gemini ASCOM driver discussion?
Losmamdy_users - general Losmady mount discussion IDK if your new mount uses a Gemini GOTO controller or has the non-GOTO #492 digital drive controller. In either case the GOTO and non-GOTO control systems use very different motors and controllers. But starting from the oval shape plastic gearbox and in to the worm, worm gear and the rest of the mount all Losmandy GM8 and G11 mounts are the same.? To figure it out show use a photo of the mount and drive motors. This will help us give you better guidance about your new mount.? Again, welcome.to the group.? -- Chip Louie Chief Daydreamer Imagination Hardware? ? ?Astropheric Weather for Imagers - Click on my sig! |

You just have not been around long enough. The Losmandy #492 Digital Drive is not a spin off or copy. They were the original Losmandy #492 non-GOTO Digital Drive controller systems and used a gear reduction stepper motor and still come "standard" on G11s and GM8s mounts since they were first released over 30 years ago.? Celestron marketed and sold Losmandy G11 mounts and controllers as the Celestron CG11 mounts.? The CG11 and G9 mounts were produced by Losmandy and were virtually identical other than the silk screened labels.??
?
But Hollywood Machine / Losmandy being a small quality oriented shop could not make the mounts fast enough or cheap enough for Celestron.? So Celestron's solution was to make their own borrowing freely from the G11 mount design.? The CI700 was Celestron's first attempt to bring mount production in-house and make a cheaper and faster to produce mount.? Celestron succeeded in the worst way, they made the CI700 cheaper and faster to produce but the CI700 was also a crude, inelegant, inflexible design with problems.? So after a short run the CI700 was replaced with Celestron's next iteration of cheaper, faster to produce mounts.? To lose the bad taste the CI700 left in people's mouths the mount was reborn as the CGE mount.? The CGE mounts were a better crude, inelegant, inflexible design and fraught with electrical issues around which entire small businesses were built to resolve.? This led to another Celestron mount the ...? ?
?
As you can see Scott Losmandy had it right the first time and the careful elegant core mechanical design of the G11 and GM8 mounts has not needed to be changed since it was first designed.? Some small internal details have been altered over time but every G11 and GM8 can be retrofitted and updated to the current production specs. Also development of the G11 and GM8 is ongoing and new improvements keep rolling out of the shop in Burbank.? ? ? ? ? ?
