Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7
Hi Folks,
?
There appears to be some compatibility issue with Platform 7 ASCOM Chooser and Gemini.NET ASCOM driver. The chooser refuses to select Gemini driver.
?
Any existing apps that are already configured to connect to Gemini.NET will continue to work fine, but if you need to set up a new connection from a new app where ASCOM chooser is involved, this is likely to fail.
?
I've asked the ASCOM Platform team for help. For now, I'd recommend that you remain on Platform 6 and don't upgrade to Platform 7 until this is resolved.?
?
Regards,
?

An update to Platform 7 is in the works. As I said, if you have already selected Gemini.NET as your telescope driver in all your apps, you will not have any problems with Platform 7. But if you need to select it from a 32-bit application using ASCOM chooser, this will fail.?

ASCOM, as well as astap have been doing several updates recently.
And in my experience, they are not good.
That, coupled with janky Windows Updates have me not trusting any of these updates.
?
I thought I had a work around for astap, but low and behold it is back to failing, again.
?
I for one am sick of these updates to fix updates that break our programs.

Unlike Windows updates, ASCOM updates are not forced on you. If you see something in the update that you might want or need, go ahead and try it. Otherwise, there's little need to upgrade. There's no requirement for you to update to Platform 7 to run the latest Gemini ASCOM driver -- it's compatible with nearly all previous platforms, including 6 and 5. And, unlike Windows updates, reported issues are fixed quickly. This time, in a matter of a couple of days.

The ASCOM release was available for several months in release candidate form to offer folks the opportunity to give it a try and report any issues prior to it being released under general availability. Some of the issues found after the GA release of ASCOM 7 arose out of highly specific driver and host software combinations; combinations that can be impossible for the ASCOM maintainers to fully test themselves, especially if the driver requires its associated equipment to be in hand. This is why participation from the community is key to ensuring everything is covered.

To ASCOM's credit, the post-GA issues that were found were promptly investigated and addressed. On Oct 20, 2024, at 00:03, Sonny Edmonds <pedmondsjr@...> wrote: |
