L6 update questions before beginning

 

Hello all. It has been a while since I have looked into L6 so I apologize if I am behind the curve. I just want to confirm that I am following the correct path to do this correctly.
I have the following link for instructions and downloads:
Is that correct?
It seems to me that I remember the need for a pic programmer to upgrade an L5 G2 to L6?
Was I mistaken, or is this just not needed any more?

?I'm a little confused about the FW update. Am I to use the GFU to update the FW? Or, am I to install it on SD cards?

Both methods do the same thing. GFU can do this automatically, by downloading the latest firmware from the internet and sending it over to the SD card over Ethernet connection. But, you can always copy the files directly to the SD card, manually, either using FTP or by taking the card out and using a card reader/writer attached to your PC. Just make sure the folder structure is correct.

To update PIC firmware to v3, yes, you'll need a PICKit programmer (~$30) and MPLAB software (free).
