Some questions concerning the new Gemini system.

Dear Ren¨¦:
Long time without saying hello to you, but my very old Gemini system mounted on an HGM-200 has worked so flawlessly for years that i did not need support :-)). The only problem being the reprogramming of the system after the button battery gets exhausted (1 or more years), then I have to read the manual. I also have an AP-1200 GoTo and the Paramount ME mounted at the observatory, and I can say that the tracking and goto performance are up to par, specially with the AP-1200. I have to say that i have gotten used to just the 5 buttons on the very old and the less old deluxe handpads, it is nice that I don?t have to put my glasses everytime to read the displays or the PC, you get to feel what you are doing with the logic buttons procedure.
Well, what I would like to know, is if the new Gemini has some improvements over the old one (besides the Ethernet and the handpad).
Best regards,
Eric. (M¨¦xico)

Hola Eric,

I am not Ren¨¦ but your friendly Neighbour in Mexico :-) ha ha ha

If your Gemini I is working troublefree (same as mine) and your only concern is the battery only lasting 1 year then do the same as I did. Use an external power source.

If you want to know more I will explain to you what I did, the next time we meet for breakfast here in Mexico City :-)

Have a nice weekend

Saludos Rainer

Hola Rainer:
Yes, I remember that you did install an outboard battery system, it works very good and you explained me how to do it.
Actually that is my only concern with my Gemini, so I will make one outboard power module like yours.
I wanted to know if Gemini II has advantages over the old one, BTW, I believe that we upgraded the EPROM sometime ago to the latest version, I will check which one do I have.
Have a nice weekend also,
Un abrazo,
Eric.

Hi Eric,

If you want I can burn you a new EPROM with the latest available firmware. I just need an empty EPROM. YOu can buy one in Mexico City from AG Electronica.

I have been following this thread about differences between Gemini I and Gemini II and honestly so far the Gemini I if it is still working I would say for what we use it there is no big difference.

Abother point is that for those were the Gemini I died or buy a new mount they will need to buy the Gemini II

The Gemini system has so much features and in all my Astronomy life I have not really used them all :-)

Well my outsourced power now is not from a Battery anymore. I am using a 5v switched power brick with a voltage divider and feed ~3v constantly into the Gemini and that since maybe already 2 years as I have a permanent setup.

Next time I go to the Observatory I will make some images and send them to you.

saludos Rainer
