That's what settle time is for. It doesn't stop or start tracking. It simply delays the next set of commands by a few seconds after a slew.

So what happens when the tracking stops? How do you know that it stopped? The fact that you need to "stop and then start" tracking again to make it work tells me that Gemini is reporting that it is already tracking (or at least Gemini thinks that it is). The Gemini.NET tracking checkbox reflects the status that Gemini is reporting, so if it remains checked, Gemini believes it is tracking.
?
"settle time" doesn't do anything about stopping or starting tracking. All it does is delay the reported completion of a slew to other apps, like NINA. In effect, even though Gemini.NET knows the slew has already completed, it will wait a few extra seconds to tell NINA. As far as NINA is concerned, Gemini is taking a few seconds longer to complete the slew, so it waits a few seconds longer before issuing new commands. I assume if you also set settle time in NINA, it will just add a few extra seconds of wait time on top of the end of slew delay that Gemini.NET added. Again, no effect on tracking or not tracking.

Re: Tracking stops
I use an older version of NINA and if I remember correctly, this was an issue with it. It happens after finishing the three point polar alignment, when I press to stop the routine, the mount stops tracking altogether. I just use the mount panel and press track again (inside NINA, not the gemini app). I haven¡¯t had this happen after a slew or plate solve though. Maybe check your NINA version just to be sure? Other than that, maybe a comms error. Maybe try posting this issue in the NINA group also, they may be able to help or at least diagnose something
?
Also, if I¡¯m not mistaken, the ¡°settle after slew¡± command does not stop the mount, it just lets it track for a while to prevent any anomalies right after slewing, like backlash or mount vibrations or such. I could be wrong though.

Tracking stops
I've been having problems with the mount (GM811G) stopping tracking (or not starting?) after a slew or plate solve.? ?This has happened many times (seen it in 30 imaging sessions?).? ? Problems usually follow a meridian flip.? Interesting that slews and plate solves at the beginning of an imaging session are seldom impacted.? ?And it does not happen all the time with meridian flips? --? I see it for about half the autofocus runs which occur after a meridian flip and for about a quarter of the plate solves (which occur after the autofocus).? ?I am using NINA to control the imaging session and NINA is commanding the slews and plate solves.? ?Tracking failures are easy to spot -- seeing star trails in the images NINA is displaying.? ?My usual solution to the problem is to toggle tracking off and then on again using the Gemini controller (on the PC, not using the hand controller).? ?Note that the tracking box on Gemini shows tracking to be on -- even if I know that it is off.? ?I am wondering if NINA and Gemini are having issues with each trying to control the pause after a slew.? Gemini has a control for this:? "Slew Settle Time" and NINA has a control for this:? "Settle Time After Slew".? ? How should these parms be set?? ?Use NINA or use Gemini?? ? ?I would assume that Gemini parameter should be less than the NINA parameter? --? if the other way around NINA would start issuing commands and the mount might ignore them since it was paused.? ?I have a full Gemini troubleshooting log from my previous imaging session where the problem occurred three times.? ? ?Any helpful advice?? ?I can provide the logs if requested.? ? Thanks? ?--? Jim |

Re: Gemini will point in the complete wrong direction
This may need to be a different thread, but something else that has been happening at L5 and L6 even with updating the firmware.?
?
When i click the DEC or RA button on the touch screen OR the bottom physical buttons it will occasionally slew the wrong direction. If I press the opposite button for each direction it continues along the same pathway.?
?
So for example if the if I am trying to slew the RA motor to the west I would click the appropriate button. I will press the touch screen or physical button to slew to the west. However rather than slewing west it will slew to the east. I will release, and when I hit the button again it will continue slewing in the same, wrong, direction. when I go back to the opposite directional button. It will continue to slew east. It is not until I repark at counterwieght down, unpark and try to slew again that this will fix.?
?
This same issue will occur with the Dec axis.?
?
It is not everytime but does happen consistently.?
?
What will make this happen more often than not is when I try to manually slew the RA and Dec axis simultaneously. It happens far more often in the Dec axis than the RA.?
?
Any thoughts here?
?
I don't think this is related to my initial problem as there usually is a clear fix by re-parking the mount.? |
Re: Gemini will point in the complete wrong direction
I did have the problem before and turned off the NINA to mount sync which helped. I ran it last night with 0 problems. Guiding RMS was 0.3 total, performed the meridian flip perfectly. So Hopefully this will be fixed. I am now connecting via ethernet port which may also be a contributing factor.?
?
I also checked the battery voltage which was fine.?
?
I do appreciate everyones help this has been a frustrating experience made easier by ya'lls help.

Re: Gemini will point in the complete wrong direction
Ryan,
When first starting out with my GM811G HD I did quite a few "Factory Resets" To make sure I had not screwed up one of the settings.
It takes you back to reset anything we, as humans, may have mistakenly messed up in the settings.
It is a blanket fix, and you will have to walk through everything again. But it is well worth the efforts.
?
Worked for me, even when experiencing the exact thing you started this thread with.
As you gain experience with your mount (or as I did with mine) the oddities got fewer and fewer.
Now, no problems for a long, long time.
?
I always suspect that guy in the mirror first when odd things crop up. ;^)
But Paul K has always helped me find my way. Especially with settings hidden behind settings. LOL!
?
Something else that is often not discussed, when you build your aiming model, after a good Polar Alignment, I like to do 10 stars East, and 10 stars West.
This gives a lot of fine tuning to the mounts aiming. And it aids tremendously the Pointing Accuracy. Rene` agreed with my strategy years ago. More Stars are better.
I'm all about accuracy in my setting up. I figure that the better I setup, and the more I help my mount learn, the better it is going to be able to work for me.
Good basics help speed things up with plate solving too.
?
I haven't done a "Factory Reset" for years now. No reason to.
But I did a bunch when learning my new mount.
You'll get around this Pointing the Wrong Way confusion. But don't be afraid of doing a Factory Reset.
It also helps YOU learn your mount. ;^)
?
The more accuracy we put in in our initial setting up, the more joy we'll find down the line.
I start at making sure my Tripod is as level as I can get it. I spent my whole life working in Heavy Industry and Utility fields.
Accuracy in installation is what keeps machines happy for decades. Works for my Losmandy Mount, too.
But first I had to get the junk from my first mount out of my head, too.
?
You'll get there.

Re: Gemini will point in the complete wrong direction
If your time zone changed then you might want to look for other settings that changed.? Verify the new time and SAVE it.? Power down wait 20 seconds and.thwn reboot Gemini 2 and verify your time is correct.? Next.connect your PC and start / load.the apps and verify the apps are not pushing the app data up to the Gemini 2.? Others have had this problem with NINA and Gemini-2.??

Re: Gemini Telescope and Firecapture question
Gary,
?
It sounds like you don¡¯t have FireCapture set up correctly for your mount¡
?
Sometimes I¡¯ll do the same thing as JB.
Other times I¡¯ll build a small 3-4 point model on whatever side of the meridian I¡¯m working on, using plate solving in NINA to center, then when I disconnect NINA and open FireCapture and it connects to the mount, I use the ASCOM controlller that pops up to search for/go-to/track whatever it is I¡¯m looking for¡ because of the model the object usually shows up centered or at least in the field of view.?

Re: PDEC out of range errors
Thanks Rene, Paul
?
Rene - thanks for the detailed information. After the PDEC error I changed the battery/reset & reconfigured the Gemini-2 then did a cold start etc so I think it would cover your points. The powerfail error is the after all those changes plus I replaced the power board/strip, power supply and power outlet.
?
I will talk to Losmandy this morning to discuss but as an added precaution I have ordered a new power supply and Ra/Dec cables. The only other thought is that I may have damaged the power socket on the Gemini-2 given what looks like power blips - is there any way to inspect that or am I overthinking it?

Re: Gemini Telescope and Firecapture question
Although I have used Firecapture for years, and think it's a great piece of software, I have recently switched to Sharpcap with outstanding results. The image quality is noticeably better, and you can easily control Gemini from within the SC controls, including a spiral function. It also has a great guiding function called "Feature Tracking" which stays on the target, spot on! I highly recommend it. Art Trail Broken Arrow, OK, USA attrail1@cox,net

Now I'm doing planetary with FireCapture. As you all know it is difficult to get a planet centered for imaging. I can't seem to open the Gemini Telescope software control while FireCapture is open. It errors. If I close FC, Gemini Telescope will connect right up.?
?
Note: Once the planet is centered, FC can center and track it just fine.?
?
I'd like to be able to Find and Center the planet with the Gemini software control. Is it possible to do this ? I'm trying to do as much of this remotely from in the house, as the temp is in the teens here at night.??
?
Also I have seen on some YouTube videos that EQMOD has a Spiral Search feature for finding an object, like a planet. Does Gemini Telescope have anything like this ??
