Re: Can’t connect Ethernet or USB

I’d be pretty surprised if it wasn’t playing up without the lvl 3.+ dsPIC33 firmware. ?

if you flash GFU back to lvl 5 ensure you reset HGM Defaults and then all your settings

Re: Can’t connect Ethernet or USB

I’m sorry for so many posts.
?
I’m using GFU, I have now tried twice, selecting to install Gemini 5, the 2nd time I selected to format the SD before the firmware install, and both times it installed ver 6 firmware instead.?

How do I downgrade my Gemini 2 back to ver 5 firmware?
?
Many thanks,
?

Hi Bob,
?
You worked out most of it yourself before I could reply, good job, most folks just wimp out and say it doesn't work, hang in there!? So now that it is talking via Ethernet you can see all of the cool stuff and do things you could never do before.? But that's for you to play with and discover all the ways you can break the Gemini 2.? Just kidding but not really, just remember that if it all goes south just do that HGM default trick and you will be able to reset the important stuff now that you know how to set the network addresses.? Be sure to go in and set and NTP server IP address to get time updated accurately over the Internet.?
?
As far as I have seen the L6.x Gemini 2 code works okay with the V1.0 PIC code but it has not been heavily tested this way and was intended to be used with the V3.0 PIC code.? That said if you are getting stall or heavy duty messages on the DEC axis this is because the DEC worms are often setup heavier than the RA axis and the new L6.x code is more sensitive to potential stalls and overloads.? If your have the Classic? Losmandy straight line drivetrain just give the worm a little more backlash and be happy.? If you have plenty of backlash already you have another issue, likely mechanical, dirty or contaminated grease etc. clean and relube.? If this is a newer mount with tucked in servos and spring loaded OPWs adjust the OPW lift screw when the DEC axis gets tight.?
? ?
Anyway keep L6.01, it is well worth the effort for the better tracking and guiding if you are an imager!? Also order a PIC Kit programmer from Amazon, it is an easy and cheap thing and the 4X higher servo precision is a plus as is the higher reliability of the complete firmware L6.X update.? You really want to use the version 3.0 PIC code for best results.? In the mean time the V1.0 PIC code will be fine until you update to v3.0.? ??

Re: Can’t connect Ethernet or USB

Thanks Brendan:
?
Sorry, I’m new at this, unsure where to check the dsPIC33 firmware. If this is for the Servos, they are V 1.0.
?
BTW, the error started right after going from 5.1 to the 6.0 update without moving the Dec or anything. The mount was in CWD, it doesn’t matter if I have my 10” LX200 and counterweight installed or not, or the position of the Dec, it’s beeping crazy.?
?
Thanks, Bob

Re: Can’t connect Ethernet or USB

Hi Chip: I was able to manually reset my laptop IP to:
?
IP: 192.168.0.100
Subnet: 24
Gateway: 192.168.0.1
DNS: 192.168.0.1

The HC V1.60 and Mainboard 6.00 Firmware update worked.?
?
However, I am now getting a rapid beeping, at the Home Screen it says “Dec: Heavy Duty Tr.”?
?
Now what? ?

Many thanks, Bob

Re: Can’t connect Ethernet or USB

Hi Chip: I followed your instructions, still a no go. My Gemini 2 network is set to the defaults?
?

IP Address: 192.168.0.111

Netmask: 255.255.255.0

Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Primary DNS Server: 166.141.133.194

DHCP: off

?

Doing an IPCONFIG on my laptop I get:

IPv4: 192.168.12.208

I tried using an Ethernet Switch between my laptop and the Gemini, after that I tried a single standard Ethernet cable between them, no go running the GFU for either.

?

I installed ASCOM and the Gemini driver and I tried the Gemini Telescope software and it worked with my USB cable. ??

?

BTW, is the 6.1 a solid firmware upgrade without doing the chipset upgrade?

Many thanks for your help, Bob

Hi Bob,
?
Using the Gemini-2 Hand Controller boot up and go to the Top/Main Diamond button menu. From the main Menu press > System > Reset HGM Defaults.? Wait for the Gemini-2 to reboot then do a power off, wait 10 seconds then power the Gemini-2 back up?.? Once the Gemini-2 is rebooted and waiting at the Main menu press the > Menu > System > Network > and uncheck DHCP then set a static IP address, Netmask appropriate for your LAN, then use your home router's IP address for the Gateway and Primary DNS Server addresses.? Press > Back a few times and then using a windows PC or something on the same network segment ping the IP address you assigned to the Gemini-2 and see if it is found.? Once found you should be GTG, and run the GFU app making sure to use the newest 6.1 release as well as make sure the HC firmware option is checked in the GFU.? When it is all done downloading complete zipped 6.1 file just let it run and when completed, this can take a while, the GFU will say it is done and to power off the Gemini-2 then power back up and wait for the HC to display that it is updating the HC, this can really take a while so be patient and wait until you get the main menu diamond pad menu.? ??

Do you have the PIC Kit programmer and did you already install the PIC programmer app??

It also helps to use an eyepiece that yields moderate power with an illuminated reticle/ cross hair during alignment.? Seriously, apparently many of not most people have no idea where the actual center of view is with modern 68-110 degree AFOV eyepieces.?

IME if you do three stars on one side of the meridian then move the mount to the other side and align on one more star you will get a better model.?

Everything seem to work now, except that some of the menu items ?on the embedded web-server? (HandControl, MobileHandControl, Manual and Serial Command Set) return a 404 (not found) error. So probably some html files missing.

Thanks again for your help! Greatly appreciated!

Re: Gemini II dead after upgrade attemp

I don't know if this will help or not now but here goes.? Might help for the future.
?
I just completed the update to L6.1.? Unfortunately, I can't use the GFU or the Flash Firmware command on the Webpage so I always have to reformat the SD card to update.? So what I do before reformatting is put the SD card in a reader, copy off all the folders, reinstall the SD card to Gemini, reformat the SD card via GFU, remove the SD card again and put into a reader, reload all those folders, rename "NewGem.bin" to "HGM_Gem2.bin" and load that file to the SD card.? Then I reinstall the SD card, power up and everything updates.? This also preserves any config and model files in those respective folders.?
?
Attached is a screenshot of my Gemini files from L6.05.? Some of those folders have files in them so it is important to keep these files in order for Gemini to work correctly.??

Good! 8)

You probably don't need AltAz, but all the remaining. If you can't use GFU, either use one of your previous cards and upload the few new files put the SD card in your reader and copy the rest or do this with an ftp client.

Hi Erik, try doing what 搁别苍é suggested: copy the NewGem.bin file to the SD card using a card reader, and rename it to HGM_Gem2.bin, then put it back into Gemini and turn it ON. This should force a reflash of the firmware.

I finally had a clear night. When I had the problem there wasn't a lot of stars to align to because of trees so I was just using two stars going back and forth between the two. That was my problem. I did try the Sync command after going to a star and then goto back to the same star and it did move off the star but still in the fov of the eyepiece. Problem is resolved.

Hi Erik,

Please format a SD card and copy the Newgem.bin file onto it. Rename it to HGM_Gem2.bin.

Put it into the Gemini board's socket. Power on and wait for about 30 seconds. Then plug the HC into the correct port ;) and check if it connects or use Ethernet to access. W/o the SD card files on the SD card a rudimentary web page has to be displayed.

Hi group!
?
First posting here from a longtime lurker.
?
I bought my G11 with Gemini II new 4 years ago and have been using it sucessfully ever since.
This summer I also managed to upgrade to level 6: PIC programming the servocontrollers and
wrote new SD cards with firmware for the Gemini and HC. It worked fine, save some missing
catalogs etc on the hand controller.? I almost always run the Gemini from a raspberry Pi4 with
astroberry so that did not matter much anyway.
?
This was were things stood before last night when I attempted ugrading to 6.1, again copying the
new firmware bin files to the two SD cards, using a card-reader as I don't have a Windows PC for the
GFU utility. Now I cannot connect to the Gemini at all: the handcontroller just cycles between
the opening screen - Initializeing HC... - Connecting to Gemini... all over. The ethernet gives no
response either. Even switching back to the original SD card on the Gemini (the one that came with
the unit and that I never modified) gives the same result: for all practical purposes the Gemini appears
dead, save for the red light on the on/off switch.
?
Any suggestion for how to go from here?
