Re: Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7

The ASCOM release was available for several months in release candidate form to offer folks the opportunity to give it a try and report any issues prior to it being released under general availability. Some of the issues found after the GA release of ASCOM 7 arose out of highly specific driver and host software combinations; combinations that can be impossible for the ASCOM maintainers to fully test themselves, especially if the driver requires its associated equipment to be in hand. This is why participation from the community is key to ensuring everything is covered.

To ASCOM's credit, the post-GA issues that were found were promptly investigated and addressed.

Re: Can't figure out meridian flip with G11G and AsiAIR.

Sonny,
I never thanked you for your reply.? Thank you.? I was thinking about the extension and re-read what you wrote.? I think I will get the 12" extension first unless you and the group think the ra extension makes more sense.? I am hoping to increase the mount limits for more imaging time near the meridian.
Again, thank you.

Unlike Windows updates, ASCOM updates are not forced on you. If you see something in the update that you might want or need, go ahead and try it. Otherwise, there's little need to upgrade. There's no requirement for you to update to Platform 7 to run the latest Gemini ASCOM driver -- it's compatible with nearly all previous platforms, including 6 and 5. And, unlike Windows updates, reported issues are fixed quickly. This time, in a matter of a couple of days.

When you are having issues with a Gemini 2 and the mount is not acting "right" establishing reliable communication, preferably via Ethernet should be job #1. I say this because problems and issues can only be observed through the Gemini's? behavior and the configuration settings are not as easily seen, some can only be seen through the web browser UI.? Get it connected to an Ethernet port on a laptop or PC so you can see how it is really configured and if need be updated and/or missing files added directly to the Gemini's file system.?

An update to Platform 7 is in the works. As I said, if you have already selected Gemini.NET as your telescope driver in all your apps, you will not have any problems with Platform 7. But if you need to select it from a 32-bit application using ASCOM chooser, this will fail.?

Forgive my curiosity, but did you ever get this resolved?

Re: Update Process Question

I copied those new L6.05 .htm/.cgi files to the appropriate subdirectories on the SD card, reinstalled and powered up.? Now I can see the new "Flip Point" feature on the Mount Webpage.? All good.
?
Thanks for the education.? I'll add this to my update notes.

The L6.05 zip file contained more than just the .bin firmware file, it also contained a number of sub-directories and .htm and .cgi files in those subdirectories. Make sure you have these copied to your SD card, as well. GFU would automatically transfer all of the files over to the SD card, but if you copied just the .bin file by hand, you're missing the rest.

Yes!? Last night I had to try out the new updates after updating yesterday (L6.05, HC 1.63).? I targeted M2 and let the mount track. When the MI-250 got within an hour of needing to flip, the new "Limit" feature appeared on the HC!? What a useful feature!? Instead of looking at the mount's physical position and trying to guess when it will get to the safety limit, now I know exactly how much time is left just by glancing at the Hand Controller.? VERY convenient!

Thanks to all who worked on this update and made it possible. Another feature that makes Gemini easier to use.

Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7

Hi Folks,
?
There appears to be some compatibility issue with Platform 7 ASCOM Chooser and Gemini.NET ASCOM driver. The chooser refuses to select Gemini driver.
?
Any existing apps that are already configured to connect to Gemini.NET will continue to work fine, but if you need to set up a new connection from a new app where ASCOM chooser is involved, this is likely to fail.
?
I've asked the ASCOM Platform team for help. For now, I'd recommend that you remain on Platform 6 and don't upgrade to Platform 7 until this is resolved.?
