Re: 12V Exterior grade Wireless Access Point
Hi David,
?
I use a GL.iNet GL-AXT1800 in 2.4ghz mode as a AP/Repeater. It is powered by USB C if you have access to that connection at your telescope - mine is connected to my NUC for power.
It also has two ethernet ports if you want to connect the Gemini-2 etc..
?
?
Good luck,
Ken

Re: 12V Exterior grade Wireless Access Point
OK my terminology was wrong. I want to have a laptop at the telescope connected to a "box" that connects to my wifi network and has a couple of ethernet ports, one for the G-2 and one for the laptopn.

So, I need a recommendation for that "box" (and maybe a correct nomenclature ...). D. -----Original Message-----

You literally said that you were looking for an access point ("... so I'm hoping I can find a good AP...") so I pointed you at one that is both weatherproof and is powered by PoE; two common features of outdoor access points. The one I pointed you at would be mounted on the outside of your home/building and optionally be equipped with external antennas; even directional ones. Your imaging PC would have its own wifi capability and the external AP would have a single ethernet cable that is ran internally inside your home to wherever your router/switch is located. Perhaps you didn't fully articulate your requirements or have something else in mind? On Oct 21, 2024, at 13:32, David C. Partridge <david.partridge@...> wrote: |

That's the whole point - I already have a WAP and router, I just want a wireless connection from the telescope to the network - i.e. no ethernet cables except on the 'scope.

¿ªÔÆÌåÓýI don¡¯t greatly wish to lay a long Cat6 cable to my ¡®scope, so I¡¯m hoping I can find a good AP that can connect to my ethernet network.? Needs to be suitable to use outside, and run off 12V. ? Recommendations most welcome. ? PS I¡¯m in the UK if that makes a difference. ? Thanks David ? |

Re: Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7
The ASCOM release was available for several months in release candidate form to offer folks the opportunity to give it a try and report any issues prior to it being released under general availability. Some of the issues found after the GA release of ASCOM 7 arose out of highly specific driver and host software combinations; combinations that can be impossible for the ASCOM maintainers to fully test themselves, especially if the driver requires its associated equipment to be in hand. This is why participation from the community is key to ensuring everything is covered.

To ASCOM's credit, the post-GA issues that were found were promptly investigated and addressed. On Oct 20, 2024, at 00:03, Sonny Edmonds <pedmondsjr@...> wrote: |

Sonny,
I never thanked you for your reply.? Thank you.? I was thinking about the extension and re-read what you wrote.? I think I will get the 12" extension first unless you and the group think the ra extension makes more sense.? I am hoping to increase the mount limits for more imaging time near the meridian.
Again, thank you.

Unlike Windows updates, ASCOM updates are not forced on you. If you see something in the update that you might want or need, go ahead and try it. Otherwise, there's little need to upgrade. There's no requirement for you to update to Platform 7 to run the latest Gemini ASCOM driver -- it's compatible with nearly all previous platforms, including 6 and 5. And, unlike Windows updates, reported issues are fixed quickly. This time, in a matter of a couple of days.

When you are having issues with a Gemini 2 and the mount is not acting "right" establishing reliable communication, preferably via Ethernet should be job #1. I say this because problems and issues can only be observed through the Gemini's? behavior and the configuration settings are not as easily seen, some can only be seen through the web browser UI.? Get it connected to an Ethernet port on a laptop or PC so you can see how it is really configured and if need be updated and/or missing files added directly to the Gemini's file system.?

Re: Warning: please hold off on updating to ASCOM Platform 7
ASCOM, as well as astap have been doing several updates recently.
And in my experience, they are not good.
That, coupled with janky Windows Updates have me not trusting any of these updates.
?
I thought I had a work around for astap, but low and behold it is back to failing, again.
?
I for one am sick of these updates to fix updates that break our programs.

An update to Platform 7 is in the works. As I said, if you have already selected Gemini.NET as your telescope driver in all your apps, you will not have any problems with Platform 7. But if you need to select it from a 32-bit application using ASCOM chooser, this will fail.?

The L6.05 zip file contained more than just the .bin firmware file, it also contained a number of sub-directories and .htm and .cgi files in those subdirectories. Make sure you have these copied to your SD card, as well. GFU would automatically transfer all of the files over to the SD card, but if you copied just the .bin file by hand, you're missing the rest.
