Irwell TRX and ADE-1-24

Hi all,

The Irwell AF schematic shows an ADE-1 mixer.
Although still available, the ADE-1-24 seems to be easier te get, and cheaper (I know, I'm Dutch, ;-) ).

I have read that the ADE-1-24 can be substituted for the ADE-1, but I have also read that that is not the best idea.

Does anyone know what the wisest thing to do here would be ?

Thanks, 73,
Hans

Hi Hans,

The BITX20 group has some interesting comments regarding the ADE-1-24:??/g/BITX20/topic/4104916

QRP Blog also has an interesting write up:??

Basically, it's a custom version of the ADE-1 with a mirrored foot print.? ? ?The -24 indicates that it's a custom part from Mini Circuits.? So, custom (Non returnable) parts were bought, not used, than resold back out on to the surplus parts market.? ?

If you are not concerned with phasing, flipping 1-6 and 3-4 are really just swapping the input and output coil ends - there is no real ground in the mixer, the ground connections are really just the recommended connection - They could also be labeled LO+, LO-, and RF+ and RF-.? ? The? primary difference becomes pulling the IF output off of the LO coil instead of the RF coil.? ?This may also boil down to having IF+ and IF- as well.? So flipping all of the connections still works, but it's not have the ADE-1 was tested, so may not be the exact spec of the original ADE-1.? ? The QRP blog measured no difference up to 60 MHz which would indicate it will work fine in this application.? ? The other alternative is to just flip the part back over and solder leads from the PCB pads to the mixer leads.?

I was also confused by the "+" suffix on all of the parts.? ?But, this indicates RoHS compliance (Lead Free).? ?Neither Mini Circuits nor Digikey lists non lead free parts on their web sites, so ADE-1+ is likely the current default part number if ordering new parts.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Jim,

That does clear up things a bit.
Just learned from Andy that he did use the ADE-1-24successfully in his Irwell TRX, so I think I'll
go ahead and order me some of these.
