Unity In Jesus Respects Our Individuality
Today's Scripture: Lifting up His eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: ¡°Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, so that they may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one, as We are one, I in them and You in Me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that You sent Me, and that You loved them even as You loved Me. "Father, they are Your gift to Me. I wish that where I Am they also may be with Me, that they may see My glory that You gave Me, because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know You, but I know You, and they know that You sent Me. I made known to them Your name and I will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them and I in them.¡± --John 17:20-26 **** Many congregations in my denomination celebrate today as Ascension Sunday, and if your denomination and/or congregation does so as well, the Gospel selection will of course be different--and even more so if your congregation/denomination has a different method for selecting scriptures to be read. May we all celebrate our unity in diversity--the theme of today's sermon/reflection! **** Jesus is praying to the Father. It is the night of the last supper. Jesus has shared a meal with His disciples, washed their feet, given them a new commandment to love one another as He loves, and told them of His impending departure. Now he prays. In today¡¯s gospel, we overhear a portion of His prayer to His Father and our Father. He prays for us. Three times, He asks our Father that we would all become one as He and the Father are one. But how so? How CAN this be so? The disciples are a disparate lot. They all are Jews and all happen to be Galileans--Judas was the only exception to the latter, and he had already skulked off to betray Jesus at this point--but even within the commonality the others share, they are about as diverse as you might imagine. One disciple among the Twelve was Simon the Zealot. Nothing else is known about him other than his being a "zealot," which tells us quite a bit. It means he was a revolutionary promoting the violent overthrow of the hated Roman occupiers. But also there was Matthew, who had been a tax collector in service to those Roman occupiers. James and John were known as the "sons of thunder," which does not portend that they were in any way "get along to get along" sorts--but perhaps others were. Finally, there is Peter--both impetuous and mercurial--who nonetheless possessed natural leadership skills, despite his many blunders. Overall, a motley crew indeed--all of whom were flawed humans unprepared at this point for the challenges of the turmoils they were about to face. Unity? Not looking much like that at all, as we might define such! What was true of the Disciples is, of course, true of us. There are differences in perspective among us. How are we to deal with that? I'll depart for the moment to share a bit of humor. A politician is approached by one of their constituents with one of those dreaded divisive issues that will alienate either one constituency or another. The question: "What is your stance on alcohol?" After squirming a bit, the "solution" came to them: "If you're referring to that demon drink that leads to drunken rage and the destruction of families and loved ones--I'm against it!" "If you're referring to that sweet nectar that leads to relaxation, warmth, friendship, and forgiveness--I'm for it!" Please let me assure everyone that, in no way, am I interested in weighing in on either side, nor is it my intention to provoke interdenominational discord over this issue. Neither am I claiming that there is no "right" or "wrong" answer to this or any other issue. This is, however, an example of a matter of perspective--and assuming that one draws their conclusion honestly from their experience, either of

Supermarket Trip
A young man was walking through a supermarket to pick up a few things when he noticed an older lady following him around. Thinking nothing of it, he ignored her and continued on. Finally he went to the checkout line, but she got in front of him. "Pardon me," she said, "I'm sorry if my staring at you has made you feel uncomfortable. It's just that you look like my son, who died recently." "I'm very sorry," replied the young man, "is there anything I can do for you?" "Yes," she said, "As I'm leaving, can you say 'Goodbye, Mother'? It would make me feel so much better." "Sure," answered the young man. As the old woman was leaving, he called out, "Goodbye, Mother!" As he stepped up to the checkout counter, he saw that his total was $127.50. "How can that be?" he asked, "I only purchased a few things!" The clerk replied "Your mother said that you would pay for her."
