CPR H-16-44 scrapped 3
Hello I read a few months ago in a Rapido Trains online newsletter that the ex Canadian Pacific H-16-44 8554 was scrapped. Other websites said this was done on-site along with two FM C-Liner B units at an old natural gas plant near Mazeppa, Alberta. It's sad news, and I though I searched for news stories of these locomotives being saved at the last minute, I believe they are gone now. Does anybody know how organizations like Heritage Park in Calgary, or the Alberta Railway Museum in Namao let this happen? Martin Iftody Toronto, Ontario Canada

closure of Canadian Locomotive Company 2
Hello, I found this accidentally looking for information on the Canadian licensee of F-M, Canadian Locomotive Company. https://kingstonworkershistory.ca/ Other histories I've read make it seem like the company quietly died for lack of customers. The Wikipedia page for CLC says they had labor unrest, sabotage, and even a crash involving the shop switcher. Parent company F-M pulled the plug in 1969. Martin Iftody Toronto, Canada

CLC in 1972 Canadian Rail 3
Hello I found an interesting article about Canadian Locomotive Company in a 1972 issue of Canadian Rail. It has several pictures of CPR FM-design units. Here's the link: https://www.railwaypages.com/canadian-rail-crha-links-to-issues It also will take you to the complete index of pdf scanned issues of Canadian Rail from the late Charles Cooper's Railway Pages. He died earlier this year. I'm not sure how much longer these files will be here, so enjoy! Martin Iftody Toronto, Ontario

Does anyone know the specific designation for the Trainmasters that CP owned which had the dual train heaters in the longer cabs? Maybe H-24-66dh? Thanks Bert

Two questions
I may be late on this, but if any of you get your hands on the new Rapido H16-44, please let us know what you think. Bert’s question from May hasn’t been answered, unless someone responded to him directly. Good question. I haven’t found the answer…yet. Frank Bongiovanni

Rapido H-16-44 5
Hello, It's nice to be part of this group again. I was on here in the early 2000's when it was a Yahoo Group. I wanted to share something with all of you; I'm not trying to brag, but I think it's really cool. In 2004, my late father-in-law Alberto Hurtado Moreno took me to the train museum in Puebla, one hour south of Mexico City. They had an H-16-44! I spent about 3 hours photographing and measuring it. We went back the next year, and I spent another 3 hours on it. I intended to build an O scale model. Fast-forward to now, my model railroader father-in-law is dead, and I'm divorced, But, a few months ago I sent 60 photos to Rapido Trains. I had seen a newsletter where two of their employees were measuring and scanning a former CP CLC-built H-16-44 in a museum in the village of Mazeppa, Alberta, Canada. I knew some of the louvers would be in different places on a CLC unit. Beloit units are different. They responded with this nice enail. I took a screen shot of it, and attached it here. Jason Shron and his employees at Rapido will do a fine job, and produce a very accurate model. I am glad I got to help in some way, and my late father-in-law would be proud. Some of the pain was worth it. Martin Iftody Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Hello, and thanks for letting me join. I'm Bert Greeley, near Fresno. I've been model railroading since 1974, and modeling FM's since the get-to. I currently have about 100 FM locos in various stages of running. True, most are old Athearn blue-box TM's, but I also have TONS (30 or more) of C-Liner shells. These are slowly being fitted to Athearn F-7 chassis and Smokey Valley sideframes. Two-stack exhaust, one oval exhaust, A's, B's - all of them. I have one CPA24-5 that has the back half of an Athearn PA frame attached to the front half of an Athearn GP-35 frame. Earnst gearing throughout. It doesn't look half bad, if I do say so. I recently acquired a H-16-44 with a Lowery body and a new cab, and I just bought a TM with the extended cab ala Canadian Pacific. Unlike almost all of my FM's, which are painted for my home road Toothpick & Shovel RR, this one will retain the CN paint but be re-lettered for the TP&S, as if they just bought the loco and haven't done a complete re-paint yet. I also have created a low-nose TM like TVA did. I used a U-33 cab (IIRC). Several of my H-16-44's are the Carey shell with the fans and cab milled out and replace by a scratch-built fan assembly and another U-boat cab. Funny how the roof curve matches! These are mounted on (you guessed it) Athearn drives. I've attached pics of the H-16-44 Carey shell and a string of my locos on a curve. The CPA24-5 is the third loco back. Bert

CPR Trainmaster 7
Unique to CPR Trainmasters the first 4 units delivered had a full width short hood to accommodate 2 steam generators for passenger service. Also for Canadian cold weather they had a winterization hatch. They were operated long hood forward which may not have been unique to Canadian operations in the early years for these powerful locomotives. This train obviously was over powered. Soo Line started the trip to the Twin Cities with a single GP 9, adding power when needed. The picture was taken in May 1960. I road behind the same train in September to North Portal, Sask to be pulled through to Minneapolis by the Soo Line where I attended university. I embark on the train at noon and arrived at the Milwaukee station at 0700 the next morning. I recently modeled the consist with an undecorated Atlas loco, IHC post office car and express baggage cars and a Rapido model of the 2200 series smooth side coach.

Rare Fairbanks-Morse locomotive donated to Tennessee museum 13

Subject:Rare Fairbanks-Morse locomotive donated to Tennessee museum Date:August 17, 2021 at 8:39:48 AM EDT Rare Fairbanks-Morse locomotive donated to Tennessee museum By | August 17, 2021 Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum receives 'Baby Trainmaster' from Tennessee Valley Authority The Tennessee Valley Authority has donated this Fairbanks-Morse locomotive to the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum. (Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum) CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. — The Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum has added a rare Fairbanks-Morse locomotive to its collection thanks to a donation from the Tennessee Valley Authority. The H16-66 “Baby Trainmaster”, built in 1958, is one of the few surviving Fairbanks-Morse locomotives, and one of less than 1,500 produced by Fairbanks-Morse before the company exited the locomotive business in 1963. It spent its entire working life at the TVA’s Gallatin power plant near Gallatin, Tenn., until its retirement in 1997. With the plant isolated from rail service, the locomotive languished at the plant until the TVA approached the museum about possible donation and preservation. Extensive planning has taken place to allow the locomotive to be moved by truck to Chattanooga. “TVRM is honored that TVA would place this locomotive in our collection for future display and possible operation” museum resident Tim Andrews said in a press release. “TVRM’s mission is to educate the public on the role of railroads in developing the Tennessee Valley region and what better example than this locomotive to showcase the intertwined efforts of the railroads and the supply of electricity by TVA in powering our economy.” Plans are for the locomotive to be moved in time to be displayed for the start of the museum’s year-long 60th anniversary celebration beginning Oct. 14, 2021. The museum is seeking sponsorships to help defray the moving costs; more information is available at the museum website or at 60years@...

New Rapido H16s 5
On the Virginian list and some of the others there’s quite a bit of cautious excitement about the coming Rapido H16-44s. With any luck Rapido will be at the PM meet in St. Louis later this week, and may have some pilot models. There may be some real possibilities here. Frank Bongiovanni

Train Master 2
Thanks for admitting me to the FM club. I have uploaded some pictures to the Train Master folder. When Canadian Pacific first started running the TMs in 1952 they ran them long hood forward. Some had full width short hood to accommodate 2 steam generators for cold weather passenger service. I rode 8901 a couple of times in 1960. The color shot was taken by Robert Sandusky, on the Moose Jaw - North Portal sub in SE Saskatchewan, in May 1960. I took the picture of 8911 in August 1965. 8905 is the only TM preserved and is at Expo Rail at Delson, Quebec, just south of Montreal.

Still Operating FM's? 3
I'll start off here. :^) Are there any FM's still operating outside of museums? And what has become of the TVA H16-66? The last I've heard of it was an article (Railfan Railroad?) on it's cosmetic restoration back in the 1990's.
