FT-857 vs. FT100D
2
Got my QST in the mail yesterday.... at first glance, I _really_ like the lighted buttons and the ergonimics of their placement better than the 100D. The buttons down the right side of the 100D are a pain to find and hit (for those of us in the world with the center console on the right in a car). The "molding" around these should help. The display, however, will be an issue to read mobile, unless there is a menu setting to increase the "font" size of the VFO -- this display is dot matrix, the 100D has 7-segment numerals, so it could be possible (I don't have a 897 or 817, does it allow this?) Although not in the QST AD, the manual does mention the ATAS --- good. If Yaesu has done their job and learned/addressed the firmware and reliability issues from the 100D, I may buy one of these (and I didn't like the 897) Hey Chip, need any early adopters/beta testers? :-) Bill W1PA

Power output on 857
Is there any info on the power output levels available on the FT-857. Continuously variable from 100 down to 0.5 whiskeys on HF would be nice! --Gary N9MJZ

FEB 2003 QST AD
Hello everyone. Just posted a digital snapshot of the Feburary QST ad under the photos section. As a fan and owner of a FT-817, I see this new rig as an upgraded 817 with DSP, 100 watts, and a 32 color display! WOW! It must be a TFT display simular to a small handheld TV. Don't be discouraged about the two buttons on the right side of the VFO, Even if you can't see them while driving, they will become second nature after a few days. Heck, it's just a VFO/memory button and a VFO lock button! My guess is that it will take the same internal options as the 817 but it is still unclear if it will take one or two filters. The ad says "It's available now!" Yeah right!!! I called 2 dealers and neither one has any info. One of them called yaesu and they said read the QST ad! That's all they know! Crazy! Anyway, I gotta get me one of these! 73! de...N0MP

Thanks
I just joined the group, I searched high and low to find out more info about the FT-857. Great info here. I have the vx-5r and feel it serves me well. I got my ticket about a year ago and now feel I need to gratuate and get a mobile. I first started looking at the IC-2720 than FT-8900, one of my friends told me about this one. From all i've read so far it sounds like the one i'm looking for. I'll wait until it hits the streets (March/April) before I drive in. Thanks.

it seems to me........
Hi Group! Just my humble opinion........ I'm glad that Yaesu is coming out with a new "all band" mobile, and although both radios (706 & FT100 series) are good, they are showing their age a bit. Since the 857 has the same basic specs as the 897, we can assume for now it's just a repackaged version of the 897 till someone has both radios and can look at the schematics. Since I've seen very little in the way of quality control issues with the 897 yet, it looks like the 857 could be reliable. I think Yaesu is trying to improve their quality control after some well documented radio problems. I hope they succeed. If Yaesu keeps going aggressive with their pricing, and if this is a re-packaged 897 with little additional engineering needed, we could see Yaesu break the $1000 (to the downside) price mark for a new radio of this type. (I know, a lot of "ifs") Hopefully it is a re-packaged 897 because I've seen good reviews of a quiet receiver, good noise blanker, other new features, and great DSP. Plus, an under 1 amp receive current would be a nice carryover. I mean, wouldn't you think that Yaesu still has to go against the 706, and since it's under $800, price it within reach? Plus not having to say I need a thousand for a new radio helps a lot. I can see Yaesu coming in between $960-$995 range just to have a huge sales windfall to start with. I'd be shocked if it was priced cheaper than the 897 is now ($934-$950) Besides, wouldn't it be nice to tell your wife "Honey, it's less than a grand?" Keeping the price within the 3 digit range would be huge for both Hams and Yaesu. We can only hope and wish till the price comes out. 73, Mike N3JLO

please see below an email i got from my mate Steve in VK2, he was at the perth hamfest last november when we saw a prototype of a rig, the model number of which i had forgotten, see Steves mention a a new quad bander. the 897 is not yet available in VK. is the 857 a quad bander? cheers graham VK6RO http://www.qsl.net/vk6ro/index.html Hi Graham The new portable model is FT-897 , larger than the FT-817 but 25 Watts Portable and 100 Watts base . The new 4 band mobile ( 28 50 144 440 ) the same size as the FT-817 and 50 Watts 35 Watts UHF is what I am interested in . Just dreaming at this stage .... QST AD

I posted another copy of the QST AD that is larger and higher resolution. You can really see the buttons surrounding the tuning knob...V/M, LOCK, DWN, UP. It looks to be the size of the 817, but perhaps thicker...certainly no longer.

New rig

Personally I would like to see Yaesu come out with a new version of the 847 with more features that would make it closer to(better)than the Kenwood TS 2000. I love Yaesu rigs but sold my FT 847 when Kenwood came out with the TS 2000. The 2000 just has more features ie dual receivers and 100 watts on 2 meters not to mention all filters etc being included, nothing else to buy unless you want the voice recording unit etc. The 847 has been out for quite a while now and it's time for an upgraded version, need to keep the alignment menu access this is a great feature of most Yaseu rigs. I'd like to see a rig that includes everything (filters, txco, etc.) also, satellite capablility is great, don't forget true dual receivers and lots of memory space. Don't get me wrong I love the Kenwood TS 2000 but it has a couple of flaws, the major one being it's not a Yaesu!! Yeasu is currently the only major manufacturer putting out great rigs quickly and seem to be listening to what we want, keep up the good work!!

Pictures of the FT-857?

I tried the yaesu museum link and it didn`t work. However you can see a pic of the 857 here: http://www.rigpix.com/yaesu/ft857.htm I tried to add the photo to the "photos" sectio of this Yahoo!groups website but apparently members are not allowed to. Until that happens we have to save the link to rigpix or use other links to gaze at it... Thanks .Pres Waterman.W2PW GO BILLS!

Looks like that backed off from the improved speaker in the FT100D and went back to a smaller / flush mounted design. After all of the mods they crammed into the extended life version of the 100 model, I sure hope they carried some of those improvements forward into this product.

Poor RX coverage
3
FT-857: "Wide frequency coverage: TX on the HF, 50 MHz, 144 MHz and 430 MHz Amateur Bands, plus RX at 0.1~56Mz, 76~108 MHz, 118~164 MHz, and 430~470 MHz." This is a major downgrade from the FT-100. Above 30 MHz the FT-857 covers only about 20% of the spectrum that the FT-100 covers. That's not my idea of progress. I won't be trading in my FT-100 for the new model anytime soon--probably never! -Tim (N7VU)

Business model for the FT-857

I find it fascinating reading all the comments about the new FT-857. Why DSP as an option? A Battery extra; filter additional et al.... What do you expect? A $900 rig with everything? How is Yaesu going to make any money and develop new products if everything was included at once in the beginning? Yaesu is the only company that is introducing new products at a fast pace. They have made a decision to take over the amateur radio market and they are doing it with investment. The investment involves new designs, new circuitry and new capabilities. All olf Yaesu's recent radios have different designs (FT-817, FT-100, FT-897 and FT-857) because different teams get tasked to design these radios on a rotating basis. This is an expensive process. They could have used the same design in all the radios (then there would only be one radio) and have all the hams complain that this super duper radio, still doesnt have this, that, or that other (this is what happens in the cellphone market as Nokia basically uses the same core design for all their phones). If you all remember (I do) when the IC-706 came out, it had RX problems (remember that it was advertized that it receives to 200MHz but it was not guaranteed outside ham bands - and it just didn't receive outside the ham bands) and many other short comings. After selling thousands, Icom made a newer version and added DSP as an option. Finally it became even better coming out as 706MKIIG. Well the same happened with the FT-100. Yaesu listened to hams and fixed the DSP, came out with a newer speaker, fixed many shortcomings and offered built-in filters for a much higher price (which now costs much less than the original bare-bones radio). In all this time, Yaesu (and Icom) made lots of money and it is this money which made possible the development of newer radios, such the FT-897 and now the FT-857. Just look at the numbers. If Yaesu sells 1000 FT-857 (which doesn't happen overnight, no matters how many hams there are) it will probably gross about $500,000. At $100,000 per person, this employs five engineers for a year. What about overheads? Costs? manufacturing? At 1000 radios per year, it is a loss making business. It either needs to sell more or make money elsewhere (which is why accessories cost, and cost lots!). Unless numbers move up to millions, manufacturers can not make enough money that's why we pay for options, such as DSP, battery packs et al and at a high price. When a product matures, then you can expect an all-in-one package (like the FT-100D today which costs only $780 - I bought mine - the FT-100 - for $1400 2 years ago) for the same price. This will happen after 2 years when enough radios have been sold and the radio makes the manufacturer money. So, be happy (as I am ) that Yaesu still makes wonderful radios, and comes out with them often. Finally the reason why Kenwood still sells and advertises the TS-50S is not because they keep making it, but because it costs too much money to develop new radios and even more money to setup new manufacturing lines. Keep up the good work Yaesu... Peter, KC1QF/VE3PPV/LX1QF

FT-857 Price
Barry, the GigaParts price has already dropped to $849 and Texas Towers has a a price of $829 on their website. Also, Texas Towers is quoting a price of $59 (vice $85 at GigaParts) for the DSP unit. So the price of the FT-857 with the DSP unit (but no filters) is under $935 at GigaParts and under $900 at Texas Towers. If Texas Towers charges shipping and Gigaparts does not (I don't know the policy at Texas Towers but I believe GigaParts provides free shipping), they are very close in price. For a radio that isn't available yet, it will be interesting to see where this goes over the next month or so. 73, Mike, KC4VG
