Low Speaker Volume 857-D

I have low volume from the speaker on all modes and bands. I Can barely hear it above road noise at highway speeds. The sound is not distorted and the volume control works just fine. This is new. When I first installed it mobile it was a comfortable level.?

This just started a couple of weeks ago when I activated a park. I used headphones and flipped the switch on the back of the head to PH. That lowered the volume, but moving the switch back to S no longer makes any changes in volume level. It remains at the lower level no matter what position it is in. I checked for switch integrity with an ohmmeter. Switch does not appear faulty.?

Any suggestions?

My thoughts would first tend toward dirty switch contacts, then a switch failure. A mechanical problem seems more likely than electronic. Have you tried exercising the switch repeatedly to clean it?

Take a look at the 470 uF 16 volt audio coupling cap and the relay contacts on RL1001. I would suspect the C-1550 first. Also the contact on the external speaker/phones jacks.

I checked continuity of the switch in both positions and it is zero ohms in the appropriate places an both sides and high resistance in the appropriate directions. So that is an unlikely scenario. For good measure, I put contact cleaner on the switch and exercised it. No change in behavior or resistance readings.

?

Try exercising the connectors on the control head and the main body.

J. D.,
I'll have to look into that. First I got to get a schematic and maybe a service manual, if I can find one.

Tried exercising the jacks, but no change. Will look at contact resistances.

FT-857 service manual download. The d model sis also available for download. The control head is the same for both models.

Funny. I just reinstalled my FT-857D in a newer truck. My screen was all zebra stripes. The audio was so low. I check wires and swapped external speaker. I checked the switch on the control head. Still no better.? I bought a new head unit from HRO due to screen and I had 2 broken knobs. The audio is 80% better now. I was going to use contact cleaner on speaker plug and see what happens.? Don't know if that helps.?

Follow up.? ?All working normally now.

None of the above suggestions made any difference (altho I never did check out the relay and capacitor on the main board.) Thank you for all your replies, though.

So I finally decided to do a [FUNC]+PWR ON reset. That did it! Volumes are back to normal now. Apparently, something I did changed the volume response.?
