Ft 857D with Ham Radio Deluxe
I have been using a very old version of HRD, and recently bought a license for the latest HRD to use with my 857D.?? With the new version I don't have as many defined buttons. I assume there are some op codes that can be used, but the 857 manual gives just a few CAT codes. I'd like to have some of the settings as buttons on HRD, rather than having to putz through the menus on the front panel of the radio. For example, it is not convenient to use the VFO A/B, filter selection, power level, and agc on the radio itself.? When chasing a DX station it would be much easier to use the HRD buttons.? In my old version of HRD, there was a button for AGC that was useful for peaking noise when tuning a mag loop antenna. So.....has anyone else had these problems with HRD, or have access to CAT codes for the 857D? |
You need to customize the radio panes in the main, logbook and DM780 Screens. You can add or delete buttons, drop downs and sliders from within the customization screens. If you haven't done so already you need to download the HRD Manual from the website, it will show you all of this. Also in the back or end of the 857 Manual there is a chart of all MENU commands and what can be set. Have Fun.. Mitch N4MF |
That's the problem.? In the HRD customization screen, there is no choice (for exampe) to assign a button for 2.3 KHz filter, 500 Hz filter, and many other useful functions.? The Yaesu manual only lists less than 20 CAT commands.??
I know from using an ancient version of HRD that the radio is capable responding to (for example) an assigned AGC on/off button.? But the latest HRD version has no way that I've found to assign a button to that function. |

开云体育If I remember correctly the older post on this, the free version did things that will harm the memory locations. Yaesu used a type of chip that can only be written to a certain number of times then becomes useless. All of the newer versions do not include commands that need to be written to those chips on the 857 and 897 radios. So whatever the new version does is not supposed to harm the radios.?Bill KA0AQG? 开云体育I run the last free version with my 857D and never had the
problems that you are talking about.? maybe older radios but the
problem was fixed on the last free version that was released. On 11/23/2018 5:25 PM, WFoC

Yes, I didn't have a problem with the free version.? With commonly used buttons available, the FT 857d is a pretty easy to operate rig using HRD.? I find that I switch screens on the radio frequently to do the VFO A/B, A=B, SPLIT, 2.3 K filter, 500 hz filter, AGC on/off, power level, ATT, NB, and modes.? That's a pain directly on the radio, but quite easy with laptop buttons.
I'm not sure why it would damage the radio any more using CAT software vs making the change with an on-radio screen selection. Wayne W5GIE |
Not sure this is what you need since I don't do CAT, but I had a table of Supported Commands in my records that has

I think those commands were removed because it was shown that certain aspects of remote control on the FT-8X7 series radio shortened the life of the radio. Yaesu came out and said not to use the older versions of HRD. HRD removed the controls that caused the shortened lifespan of some of the chips for the 8X7 radios and the newer versions are safe.

I know others on here know more about it than I do, but I just wanted you to know so you wouldn't unknowingly damage your radio. 73, --Hank KB4MTO / TA5ZC --- On 2022-05-29 12:41, Adrian Fewster wrote:

开云体育Hi Adrian, ? I found this on the net which has a full list of all the CAT commands. ? I have heard that some of the commands can eventually wear out the memory position and brick the radio so I’d be careful of what commands you use. I do not have any personal experience of using it myself, however, I believe that was the reason that some functions were removed from HRD. I would suggest more research into it before using those commands. The 857 manual does not list a command for the AGC, nor do the 817 or 897 manuals. ? 73….Eric VK2VE. ? Node Red tcp request talks to a rigctld server I have connected to the radio. I rigctld direct cat requests are possible in W ..... w ....... formats.

Yes I did find the HRD notifiocation regarding removing the agc etc commands at Yaesu's request due to them apparently damaging a ram chip (I think).
+ Many years ago, KA7OEI discovered an undocumented pair of instructions for reading and writing the FT-817's EEPROM, and discovered the locations in that EEPROM that controlled radio state not accessible via its documented CAT instruction set: + + These undocumented instructions made it possible for transceiver control applications to track and modify that additional radio state. + This led to similar discovers for the FT-857 and FT-897. + The EEPROM - "Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory" - used in these radios has a lifetime limit on updates - clearly stated in its spec sheet. Transceiver control applications that used the undocumented instructions to frequently modify that additional radio state eventually wore out the EEPROM, bricking the radio. By then, the EEPROM was no longer available, and Yaesu had exhausted its inventory. 73, Dave, AA6YQ |
Most EEPROM's I am familiar with (including those built into microcontrollers) typically have about 10,000 write cycles as their limits. Firmware for EEPROM's/ microcontrollers that I have written make any changes to the EEPROM something the user does and probably occur only a handful of times during the lifetime of the device. I could see that a software-controlled EEPROM programming step could easily exceed the useful limit of number of times to write to an EEPROM. 73, Zack W9SZ On Mon, May 30, 2022 at 12:43 AM Dave AA6YQ <aa6yq@...> wrote: Yes I did find the HRD notifiocation regarding removing the agc etc commands at Yaesu's request due to them apparently damaging a ram chip (I think). |

last freeIs there an archive to get the last free version of hamradiodeluxe, the version which does not damage the FT857D EEPROM?? I use a version from 2008 and am concerned it will cause a problem as this one does modify the AGC register. Thanks, Andrew N3LCW |
