Power On current draw with radio set to low power
Radio is still sitting in the box and I've not done a lot with it other than replace the filters, chop off the power connector and replace it with power poles. Made an adapter to ground the brown wire to make it fire up in a low power mode. I've read several times about when it powers on it draws 20+ amps, is that the case if you have it set to a QRP power setting or just the brown wire grounded ?? Thinking about taking it on a cruise in cruise and how big of a power supply I might need if I'm thinking QRP ops.

Unless the meter on my power supply is slower than can pick it up, then I only see it drawing maybe 2-3 Amps on power on and almost instantly dropping down to the regular draw of I think around 0.7. I'm not sure where the 20+ startup draw you read came from, I've never heard of that. To whit, one may infer from the notes and table what current capability of a power supply may satisfy a given output power setting. I can't find an index or landing page for this site (perhaps he only uses it as a repository) however here is a direct link to the piece. There are other interesting articles or notes there. 73, John VA7OTC |
The question is based on a piece from Remote Rig hardware that I read a while back, that suggested using a 2nd power supply for to power the remote rig hardware due to the inrush current at power on and how others had issues with the remote rig hardware at the radio resetting at power on.? I don't plan on using it in this manner but thought it was a good question, I could not see so many using it for portable / qrp use if this was actually the case. Robert
