Noise sucks
Okay so I have a sub optimal antenna in a sub optimal environment full of frying bacon, embedded in a jet engine, under a waterfall, overlapped by 100 MPH wind noise.?
Yes it's a FT-857D with about as clean as you can get lab supply (Lambda) attached to a horizontal loop under the eaves (yup, HOA) with a SGC SG-230 tuner protecting my finals. I can hear strong signals but the hash is wearing me out. Listening to hf is all about pain for gain. How much can i listen to before my brain melts. I don't care if it's non intuitive settings or esoteric add on magic boxes , just please , a little help here. ~AF7XT Dennis ? |
At one time, I lived in a basement apartment, I didn't have ANY sort of antenna. I Bought an ATS-120 and a mount, installed it in my car and did my radio hobby from the car, not ideal, but I had fun. Good luck. 73 John VE7KKQ On Tue, Dec 14, 2021 at 12:01 AM AF7XT <kopcicle@...> wrote: Okay so I have a sub optimal antenna in a sub optimal environment full of frying bacon, embedded in a jet engine, under a waterfall, overlapped by 100 MPH wind noise.? |
Of couse, the best is to locate the source and eliminate it. Some LED lamp supplies can be pretty bad, but it could be anything. You can try shutting off circuits one at a time while running the 857 on battery to see if you can narrow it down. The Clearspeech or CLRdsp devices are wonderful for reducing the noise, and can make listening a pleasure, almost like FM, but they do not magically improve the S/N ratio of signals, so you still might only actually hear the stronger ones. There are also noise cancelling devices (MFJ makes one) that take a sample of noise from one antenna, invert it and cancel out that noise on your receive antenna. I have heard they can be effective.

Have you tried the NR (noise reduction) setting (menu 049) and NB (noise blanker) setting (menu 063)? Also front panel menus MFl and MFp?
I agree that finding and eliminating the source of the noise is the real solution, but sometimes that's not possible. I used my 857D mobile and couldn't eliminate a lot of the noise when driving. Those settings helped tremendously. Dan de NM3A at mail dot com -- 73, Dan NM3A |
I feel your pain. I am in a HOA here in FL. I use my 891 for POTA and backyard ops. But I have powelines running through my back yard so my noise floor is high 24/7. So I too operate mobile with the 857D and do POTA. No ideal for many but works great for me. Nothing better than working Australia or Japan from the mobile from FL.

Vic, WA4THR,
??? I did due diligence concerning battery operation and examine the mains. I did get some results but not nearly as much improvement as I had hoped for.? The Clearspeech or CLRdsp devices are a possibility. Thank You for reminding me. I'll avoid Martin's diversity noise reduction as long as I can because I've experienced good and null results over the years. So go figure. |
Do you have the S9 reading on one specific?band or multiple bands?? I ask because I'm having similar noise issues but mostly on 40/20. Andrew, KD5CQ On Tue, Dec 14, 2021 at 9:31 PM AF7XT <kopcicle@...> wrote: Compton, VK2HRX, |
Just like Jeremy, I live in an HOA Florida neighborhood with powerlines 40' from my attic-mounted dipole. I have done just about every test that I can and I'm stuck with S7+ on my FT-897D. Even my Panasonic RF4900 receiver is useless at my house.
One day about 5 years ago I took my 897D to a horse farm out in the middle of nowhere Florida for field day. I hooked it up to an inverted V and fired it up. There was no noise; the rig was so quiet and the signals so strong. I was so jealous of the ham who lived there. I hope you find the problem! 73, --Hank KB4MTO / TA5ZC |
开云体育Hi HankI had the same problem so I called my utility company and asked them to find and fix the lines. ?It was a bunch of bad insulators on the high tension lines that was causing the noise. Call your utility company and see if they can fix the problem I believe they have to fix any interference to radio reception. 开云体育Thanks Hanford, I will do that. Right outside of my Window is a transformer on the pole. I know they want to fix bad insulators because it eats up power. ? Hopefully, they can help with the noise. ? 73, ? --Hank KB4MTO / TA5ZC ? From:

开云体育Hello ? Some power companies here do not preform Preventive Maintenance (PM) on the street transformers.? The result is noisy step changes which can cause brown outs.? Usually takes a few telephone calls to have it serviced. ? 73 Malcolm ZL2UDF ? From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Hank Lambert (KB4MTO)
