The pin diodes are a very common fault. Many people can change them and do other work on these popular radios if you cant.
You dont say where you are so a bit hard to answer you.

Yes I have done a full reset.

QTH is KL7

With squelch open I rcv FM sigs, just a touch closed and squelch won't break.

Anyone?

2nd IF filters (CF1002 and CF1003). Lot of the FM only rigs have issues with the IF Filters going bad and making the radio deaf. If you are getting something that sounds like static crashes it is a pretty good indication that one or both the filters is bad.
