Local audio tone

I am a relatively new FT857D owner. I have successfully used RT Systems software to program the radio, so I don't have much experience with menu setting from the front panel.

I recently have had a problem with a 'side tone' that I hear through the local speaker when ever I key the mic when using VHF. I do not have this on HF. The tone seems to be over 1KC or so.

I suspect that I have hosed a setting when playing with the front panel controls... I could try to reset the menu items without changing the memories, but before trying a 'shotgun' approach I thought that I would be better off finding out what I did wrong in case it happens again.

I use this radio primarily as a mobile rig, and the VHF/UHF capabilities were a primary reason for selecting this radio. I use a SGC-231 tuner for HF and the only thing that is lacking for me is a 'tune' position... The SGC will tune on a SSB signal and while this is slower it works. Just sayin'

Thanks

Hi Paul.

I have been an 857 user for a few years and had very few operational issues for ages. Suddenly I started to experience that tone on VHF. Took a while but eventually I found that the old (Repeater access) tone burst was enabled. Turned it off and no tone. I could never work out why it was audible on the speaker but I didn¡¯t worry as it was diabled.

Hope that helps.

Regards

Hi Nick

Well, that fixed it. When starting out with a radio like this with many menus, I am not surprised that I selected that feature by accident...

That saved me a reset and reload of all the frequencies that I have stored. Not a big deal but here in the Midwest the temps are beginning to fall and we are due for a snow storm this weekend.

As this is a mobile rig and it is neatly tucked in the back of my SUV I would have to open the tailgate and stand outside while reprogramming running back and forth from the control head up front and the radio in the rear where the laptop would be.

Thanks again

Thanks for telling me Paul. Glad to be of help.

For what it¡¯s worth I keep the main unit in the back as well but I can unplug it and take it into the warm to do any programming. All you really need is a cable to connect front and back when its in the house and a 12 volt feed.

Also may be worth taking an image from the radio on your computer. Good safety precaution. I acquired a second hand one a few months after buying the new one. It was a very good deal and the unit was previously owned by a CB operator and not working properly. I got it going by cleaning up the dry joints that were caused when he tried to wide band it then doing a full factory re-set and finally cloning it from the new one.

Worked well!!

Anyway enjoy it. I use one of mine nearly every day. Use it with an ATAS 120A
