The pin diodes are a very common fault. Many people can change them and do other work on these popular radios if you cant.

857 D and FURUNO PA2500

Recently I got a FURUNO PA2500 linear.? all the modifications of the band Switch is done. For 12 Volts I used a DC-Dc Buck converter which I could accomadate inside itself.? My present problem is how I can connect the PTT line line of FURUNO (Green wire) with FT 857 PTT line.? one cannot connect it directly. I tried using a relay which will operate both the 857 and and FURUNO PTT lines using a foot switch. But with this operation I cannot avail CW full breaking facility. I cannot use the rear linear socket of 857 as it is engaged with CAT control.

Also like to know If I use a splitter? (homebrewed)CAT cable will there be any problem for the rig and FURUNO?
What is the purpose of TX ground and Band data pins A B C D of CAT/Linear socket of 857

Looking for suggestions and 73s

857D and FURUNO PA2500

Hai all
I got a FURUNO PA 2500 recently and modified for ham band usage. But a full CW break in cannot be achieved.
Will using a 7812 regulator? connected to 24V line and use the 12 V for control is right?
How 857D can be connected with FURUNO PA2500 linear amp for CW break in operation. I am getting a +10 V at the BK on terminal of of Furuno which cannot be connected with 857 PTT line directly. So how the both rig can be connected for a full CW break in operation. Will an optocoupler can be used?

With regards

I had this problem in my shack and added a 1:1 current balun in my coax and it cleared up the problem.

RF in the shack, often in the forn of CMC (common mode current on the braid of your coax) is definitely on the list as a "can cause this". CPU lockup, etc

?this is one good reason to check using a dummy load and make transmissions for a long enough period of time to make sure you've replicated the scenario.

CMC is usually pretty simple to diagnose because if you change antennas or most certainly if you use a dummy load and the problem goes away it was RF getting back into the shack and into parts of the rig and radios not intended to see RF.

You also always want to start solving CMC problems out at the antenna not inside the shack.

?My rule of thumb is that if you have an RF in shack problem it's because you have an antenna problem and you need to solve that.

?This is because RF in the shack? is? power that is not being radiated out your antenna correctly so simply applying ferrite beads all over the shack isn't making your signal more efficient whereas solving the RF problem at the antenna does.

? ?At the very least get a 1 to 1 balun and put it in line with the incoming feedline, well outside the shack and see if the problem goes away.

I did finally remove it from the truck and look inside. Nothing obvious. Next step hook it up on the bench. Just need to find the short cable to hook up the front panel.

Hi Dwight,
Can you post the link to the YouTube channel you watched about the EEPROM memory chip?

Re: 857d reboots or locks

Israel,
here is a post I did a while back... possibly you are having similar problem...

Hey group,
Thought I'd share my experience fixing my 857. (Probably 15 years old, always used inside)
In the past year or so whenever I turned on the 857 it would not come back to the way I powered it down.
Typically I would have it in Memory mode (not VFO) and scanning VHF/UHF programmed channels.
When I power it on it would almost always come up to a VFO random frequency and be scanning up or down the freq.
About every 10-20 times on power up it would come up with the display contrast dark, with big digits and when I switched to Memory mode and tried to transmit I would get a TX ERROR.
In this mode I always had to reflash the program from Chirp.

I watched a few youtube videos and found that likely it was the EEPROM memory chip had gone bad.
So I ordered one off digikey. The part is Q1066 on the schematic and it is a 24LC128T-I/SN
Pay attention to the package size I/SN NOT I/SM
It was an easy swap if you are ok with SMT

Reloaded the program from Chirp and it has not failed since.

cheers
Dwight

Re: 857d reboots or locks

Israel,?
Like john suggested, it could be RFI. Chokes are always a good idea on power leads. It might also be power Check the connections and fuses for corrosion. Also try another power supply and power cord.?
Good luck.?

Re: 857d reboots or locks

Sounds like RFI on the power leads, put some chokes on the power leads.

Not aware of any batteries in the rig, mine is over ten years old, no indication of a battery.

Subject: [FT-857] External meter and SWR range question..

?

Hi all -

Is there a reference anywhere to the voltage output on the Meter jack for the SWR?

I'd like to try interfacing pin on a RasPI to that Meter jack, and be correctly measuring the SWR, as the radio itself does.

For background - I'm interested in using the 857 and a Pi for somewhat remote control.
But I don't want to be transmitting into a bad SWR without knowing it, and I won't be able to see the SWR indicator or other means of knowing the SWR.?

It would seem logical that there's a voltage from (for example) 1 to 5 volts for an SWR between 1 and 5, which would cause that meter to deflect?
to the desired position.

I know there are people who sell expensive (for me, for available budget for this particular project) outboard LCD displays that do display SWR.

So, somewhere, there's clearly some way the radio provides a voltage that changes with reference to SWR, etc
Obviously something you'd have to have the graph of output voltage>SWR to know what to display...

Does that data exist somewhere?

Re: SETTINGS

Glad you got it working ---

But one of the other questions is?
"Why are you getting enough RFI in your shack to be able to cause problems with electronics"

RFI in the shack is a problem itself -- not something to resolve just by blocking it from getting into things.

It could be a sign that you need a 1:1 balun on some antenna?
