With all these? 857d problems showing up,,,is mine worth keeping? Is it, 857d's, a lemon, bad design, or, how common are these problems. I bought mine mainly for occasional portable use. Is it going to disappoint me?

Hi Jack,

Sorry to report, but I had the same issues 7 months ago with my FT-857.? Did the reset, but no joy.? I ended up sending the rig back to Yaesu for repair.? They were not helpful in defining the problem, but the final invoice showed three ceramic filters replaced (at $0.71 each).? Most of my costs went into shipping and labor.? Final outcome is the rig works fine now.??

Good luck & 73,
Jack

Power out issue

Have not used my 857 in awhile, was working fine.
Now only getting about 3 watts out on ssb and cw and no power out in AM
getting 100w out in fm and pkt
so strange
menu 75 set to 100w

hoping it is a menu setting I forget, thought I would ask here before doing a complete reset

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

Hi Gary,

Actually no i did not do the blocking caps, neither did Yaesu when they replaced CF1005. Something I plan to do in the short term, just wanted to get the rig back working correctly.

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

Mitch,

I just pulled the top off of the radio and CF1002 and CF1003 look exactly like the pictures.? I have changed CF1005 on another FT-857D in the past so I'm familiar with the replacement procedure.? Did you do the mod to add blocking capacitors as described in earlier postings with this noise problem?

Looks like I need to get on the phone to Yaesu on Monday and try to order some of these type of filters.? I have some of the CF1005 type, but not the other two.

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

Pull the top off and look at the TOKO Filters, if they look like these they need changing.

This was my 4th 857D and the first I had to replace the FM filters on. CF-1005 had already been replaced prior to me getting the radio used. That growth is the filter being destroyed from the inside out due to voltage on the in and out pins of the filters, they aren't supposed to have any applied.? Mitch N4MF

Re: FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

That can happen if you accidentally change your mode to AM. I¡¯ve done it a couple of times.

FT-857D sounding slightly distorted on FM but HF OK

I recently started having a problem with my FT-857D sounding like it's slightly off frequency on the FM repeaters on VHF. It's like you have tuned the frequency to be 5kc off but it's not 5kc off on the dial. ? It seems to be fine on the HF bands.? Anyone else had a problem similar to this.

Thanks,

Re: Automatic antenna tuner use

¿ªÔÆÌåÓý

I have an MFJ IntelliTuner and it plugs into the CAT port on the radio. ?MFJ sells the cable you need.

The tune button on the radio works just fine. ?I also have an adapter I got on eBay that allows me to add an additional CAT port on the front of the radio that goes between the microphone jack and the radios socket. ?I use that for programming the radio without removing the radio from my rack.

Re: Automatic antenna tuner use

Hello,

Assuming you have the Yaesu interface cable connected properly you need to press the tune button on the tuner rather than the tune button on the radio.? Unlike some other brands of radios, the Yaesu radios tune button doesn't work with tuners from different manufacturers.

The following is from Page 14 of the tuner manual:
If you are using the ICOM or Yaesu radio interface cable, the radio will automatically reduce power, switch to CW mode, and transmit for as long as is required to complete the tuning cycle, and then will return to the previous operating mode and power level when completed.

Good luck, and 73

?
The FT-857 has a CAT interface integrated into the microphone jack. I've wanted to make mic/CAT breakout to make a CAT display which would leave the main CAT port in the back of the radio free for tuners etc. Just haven't found the time lately.?

A word of advise they both use the cat port so you will not be able use
your LDG tuner at the same time.

I was just reading the manual for the LDG Z-817 tuner as someone on a list was selling one. It has a pass-through feature so one should be able to use it, daisy chained, after the tuner (CAT port naturally, not RF.)

No personal experience, however one of the selling points. Oh, that tuner is only good to 20 Watts, so may not suit.

It also seems as if other LDG tuners use a 3.5 mm cable for the tune-from-the-tuner feature (non-standard, info on line here and there.)

That would also appear to allow one to use other models with this device.

Re: No turn on

Merlin, K3MEJ

I had this problem with the 857D in my car. I would push the power button and the relay in the radio would click and I could see a white blueish white flash on the display then nothing. I contacted Yaesu and they said it was due to low in rush current. It turns out, I needed to beef up the DC power supply cables. My wire gauge was too thin. Installed heavier gauge wire. Problem solved. Never came back.

Duly noted.? I saw that when I took the cable off the radio.? Straight through.? I did have a straight through cable 3 feet long to test, and did a continuity check on both before installing the new one.? Confirming straight through, hi.? Still no success.? Will box it up and send it to the suggested repair site.? Thanks.??
