ISO Spare cassette and rudder
Hi Jacques, What is your boat number and where are you located? There are many variations?in?cassette and rudder. I have a cassette by the plan and an original rudder that was extended to 42" Many boats now have the dagger rudder and case on the transom. I would suggest that the cassette and rudder are not likely to fail.? If you think they are compromised perhaps you should?reinforce them.? Carrying extra is a lot of weight. I do have an extra original rudder. Jay Spalding Blue Moon? F25C #026 Stonington, CT On Sat, Mar 4, 2023 at 2:31 PM <jacques.guegau@...> wrote:

开云体育I have a spare rudder and cassette (transom hung) but I’m not sure I’d want to loan it to someone for a journey where they think they’d need to use it ? (R2AK?) On Mar 10, 2023, at 10:33 PM, Jay Spalding <jspalding19@...> wrote:

开云体育Hi Nige!?You made the right analysis ? we are going to Alaska.? What we have in mind and let me know if this sounds right or not: 1- we want to carry a spare just to not jeopardize the race and our security. The goal is obviously to use our cassette and rudder. They are both in great shape. The spare ones will be our safety net 2- we commit to sign a rental agreement where we would state the following: A. It’s our responsibility to declare any use of spare ones B. We will survey the spare cassette and rudder before and after the race to confirm there is no damage C. Based on the result of the survey, we would either make you a new one or repair it And then bring it back to you in perfect condition. I understand if this does not sound good to you. Anyway, thanks for reaching out and sharing your thoughts.? We want 4 things: have fun, finish the race, stay safe and don’t break the bank :-)? Cheers? Thanks, Jay for your reply. We just got #06. We are staying with her in SF bay and we are prepping for the R2AK. I'm confident with the cassette and rudder but if we hit a log or something, the race would be over. I would prefer to carry a spare for this reason.? Thanks again, have a great weekend.? Jacques? I think you’ll be disappointed in the performance of the F-25C if you bring too much extra stuff.?
I have an F-82R which is the cousin of the F-25C and there’s a substantial difference in performance with an extra crew member or a couple hundred pounds of stuff. I think the rudder is reasonably well protected from logs by the daggerboard, and it’s not all that common to break F-boat rudders from log strikes i.e. logs normally damage other parts of the boat.? -- Garry Sagert F-82R “Unleaded” http://SailingTIps.Ca |
