Daggerboard case plank

I noticed that the daggerboard case's notch where the line run on the daggerboard side is closed by a wood plank. To clarify this isn't the 2 struts supporting the mast step. This wood plank isn't laminated on its outside but varnished only !!!?
Is this how it was originally build ? Has anyone had to replace it ?

Does this plank has any structural role ??Replacing it would be an open heart surgery but I'm thinking of laminating a gutter that in would slide inside and glue to the 2 strongly laminated side of the notch.?

Yours sounds the same as mine. And no, it’s not structurally important. Just has to be enough to hold the cheek block. It’s probably glassed in on the inside-case face. You could dress a coat of epoxy onto it if you believe it doesn’t have a proper seal coat. Otherwise I think you don’t worry.?

mine in photos.?

Thanks for the picture. I believe there is no glass inside or might be real thin and peels like a veneer.?
My plan of attack at the next opportunity is to mould a glass or carbon sleeve outside the slot then fit it in the best I can with bunch of charged epoxy. The hardest part might be to remove and put back in place the daggerboard block at the bottom. I don't know it's it's low enough so I can fit my hand and tools there.??

I don’t think you need to create all that work. Mine is built according to the plans and from what you wrote, so is Mojo’s. The cases were built as clamshell halves, so these rope slot covers were glued & screwed down. As long as they’re watertight, they are good.?

Is her steering all back to 100% after R2AK struggles??
