Chesterfield to Willington National Grid
5
There is some concern, particularly in the Amber Valley, of the proposed route to erect overhead electricity pylons through 60 km of Derbyshire. No doubt the East Midlands mayor and those who value our countryside will be involved in this consultation. Side road zebras
A growing feature of Manchester’s active travel infrastructure are Side road zebras which start the process of encouraging active travel - at relatively low cost. The Highway Code currently gives precedence to pedestrians waiting at urban T junctions - but any walker testing this out does so at their peril. Walking starts and ends at the home and an increased number of such markings if applied nationally could well encourage more walking both in urban and rural locations. Our rights of way are far from being a comprehensive network and road safety for walkers using all our highways should have a greater priority. Regards David

Introduction
National pressure for more active travel is now developing strongly with English devolution to certain combined authorities - the latest being the counties of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. Various walking organisations have a strong broad agenda for the future which will need converting to detailed projects that are capable of development, particularly in the light of all the other financial pressures that will face a new government. This forum is a platform for topics to be discussed that can potentially take the walking infrastructure forward (both urban and rural) and promote walking as an activity both for communication and leisure in the combined authority.
