Winter Field Day
Winter Field Day 2025 Winter Field Day (WFD), hosted by the Winter Field Day Association, is scheduled to run from 1900 UTC on Saturday, January 25, through 1859 UTC on Sunday, January 26. WFD is held on the last full weekend in January and is a communications exercise that can be worked from the comfort of your home or from a remote location. You can participate by yourself, with your friends and family, or with a local club. WFD is designed to help increase your level of preparedness for disasters and for you to improve and practice your operating skills in winter environments, as the potential for freezing temperatures, snow, ice, and other hazards present unique operating conditions. WFD is open to participants worldwide. Amateur radio operators may use frequencies on the HF, VHF, or UHF bands and are free to use any mode that can faithfully transmit the required exchange intact. Similar to ARRL's Field Day, bonus points are earned in several ways, including from using non-commercial power sources, operating from remote locations, making satellite contacts, and more. Make sure you register your location at the WFD registration page. To date, there are 345 locations registered around the world. -- 73, August KG7BZ Weather Underground: KG7BZ QRZ: KG7BZ PurpleAir: Sweet Home APRS.FI: KG7BZ

ARRL 10-Meter Contest, December 14-15, Great Opportunity for Technicians

ARRL 10-Meter Contest, December 14-15, Great Opportunity for Technicians We are at the peak of Solar Cycle 25, and the 10-meter amateur radio band has been providing impressive propagation lately. Recent reports of “wide open” band conditions make this weekend’s ARRL 10-Meter Contest a great opportunity to take advantage of the best conditions of a generation. “I’ve been leaving the mobile radio on 10-meters for the drive into work each day,” said ARRL Regulatory and Radiosport Manager Bart Jahnke, W9JJ. “I’ve been working all around the world with a mobile antenna and no amplifier,” he said. ARRL 10-Meter Contest is this weekend starting on Saturday, December 14 at 0000 UTC (Friday evening in North America), and concluding on Sunday, December 15 at 2359 UTC. Stations may contact any other station, regardless of location, using CW and phone. The 10-Meter contest is a great opportunity for Technician class licensees to get a taste of HF contesting using the CW and SSB modes. On 10-meters, Technicians have CW privileges from 28.0 to 28.3 MHz, and SSB phone privileges from 28.3 to 28.5 MHz. ARRL Contest Program Manager Paul Bourque, N1SFE, hopes Techs seize the chance. “At the peak of the solar cycle, 10-meters can offer opportunities to work some great DX,” said Bourque. It was so long ago. I forgot I was a member. here is a old flyer I found. my ex and me, her sister and parents were all members. I think i was a Novice with code back then.

since I'm being chatty. lol
I also was a member of the Emerald Amateur Radio Society in Springfield, at that time they used the term (EARS). Now the radio station uses it. I always thought it was silly the radio station using the term (ears) when they actually broadcast and have no receive at all lol .

On the spot disaster
2
We saw during the hurricane disaster in North Carolina where a few amateur radio operators established a communication center on their own. No training, no support from anyone ... just on their own. When a disaster comes in your area do you set up a communication on your own down in Walmart parking lot? Do you just say "oh I have no training on working a disaster " so just walk away. What do you do? What training do you need? What equipment would you think is good to have on hand? Tell me what will you do.

Fuse tap to power mobile radios

Here's the item that I mentioned at the meeting last night. It lets you run power to your radio without having to run a wire through your firewall. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B085MGP931

Hamstick
3
I am using a firestix now for my 10 meter. It is mounted high on my work shop, isolated from the metal building. The ham stick will fit in where the firestix is mounted. Any thoughts on this? I am getting great results from firestix ... did I just waste my money?

Direction finding with the HANDI-Finder
9
I put this kit together in the 90s and was happy to see that it's still available today. No S-meter needed! You just tune in the station and then rotate the antenna until you don't hear a tone anymore. I found my old assembled kit, repaired the antenna, put a new 9 volt battery in, and it still works. Here's the main web page - https://www.handi-finder.com/ And here's a page where you can buy one for $29.95 - https://www.noard.com/noardhdf.html I thought this would be a good topic, since we were talking about direction finding at the last meeting.

My Facebook Account

I'm shutting down my Facebook account. I left it once before and made the mistake of starting it up in 2022. I won't make that mistake again. If you want to contact me, use email or texts, Facebook messenger will be turned off. BTW, thanks for all those who came to Field Day, it was a great success! Looking forward to next year. Also consider Winter Field Day January 25, 26 2025. -- 73, August KG7BZ Weather Underground: KG7BZ QRZ: KG7BZ PurpleAir: Sweet Home APRS.FI: KG7BZ
