Hi All,
I had an issue with my 22 Victoria coupe where it was running only on four cylinders.? I pulled the drivers side head and discovered that only three valves are lifting properly.? I will pull the pass side head soon, but I expect similar behavior.? My next step is to remove the valvetrain cover plates and inspect that, but it's a possibility the cam is wiped, or perhaps some push rods are bent or broken. Not sure yet.? Any guidance is helpful! I've never worked on a flathead before.??
?
I'm also on the lookout for a set of heads, mine are cracked and have been poorly braised back together.
?
Thanks!

I suspect you'll find that all of your cam gear is snapped off like mine was (or badly welded back together) - I think stuck valves would cause that to happen in most cases
Is there metal in your oil

This was my cam gear, car was also running on 4cyl?
Cadillac likely knew this was a problem because they reinforced it pretty much from the 57 onwards
From my research the parts booklet lists it as a non interchange part because they reinforced it (particularly near the generator) but the type 59 does fit and work fine as everything lines up where it should. V63 covers DO NOT FIT?

Does anyone have a digital copy of the parts list book (not shop manual)? The Packard club has theirs online so I was wondering if there was one out there for Cadillac. -- Jason Cunningham? 301-648-4201

I have an original paper copy of the Parts manual that covers types 59 to 63 and would happily take pictures of the pages someone needs and share them. I have thought about trying to digitize the manual but I feel like that might cause damage to the binding trying to get the pages to lay flat enough Tim Edwards?

Yes I have a copy, it wasn't cheap and isn't in the best?condition (mostly through hand written notes in it, it's well used)?
I've tried scanning pages before and it doesn't work very well because the paper is so thin that you get bleed through from the other side

I think the difference between 59 and 61 is to do with holes for the different carb heating system?

Hi All,
I finally got all of the valves removed and the rocker assembly out.? See photos: ? I am either going to have to re-weld the caps back on, or find a new plate. Thankfully the cam itself looks okay and I was able to free up the stuck valves.? I did have a bent valve spring though so I need a replacement if anybody knows where I can get one.??
?
Oh and yes I do have the shop manual.

It has been a while, but I have usually bought such thing from “Egge Machine” in California. They made me 6 new stainless valves for my 1914 Chalmers touring. Huge things, I made the new valve guides. Old gaskets too as I recall. Jim

Update!? Got it running again!? Repaired the rocker assembly and reinstalled it.? Also machined the heads to remove warpage.? Now it runs on all 8 cylinders!
|
Great news! It's actually impressive how these engines can run with pretty much everything wrong or broken (I mean it won't run well but it'll run)?
Mine was running on 4cyl, timing out 180 and a set of sketchy points when I got it
