Young Eagles event 5/20 - volunteers needed Friday afternoon and Saturday during the event
Fellow aviators,
We're requesting assistance from our Chapter 1656 members and all other interested persons who would be available to Friday afternoon, 5/19, at 4:00 p.m. to help with various setup tasks in preparation for our Young Eagles event on Saturday 5/20.? This event has caught the eye of a huge number of young people in the area, and during our regular chapter meeting this morning Ronnie Godfrey (our chapter president and YE coordinator) advised us that within the first 3-4 hour registration about 160 kids registered to fly!? He had to close the registration due to the immediate and overwhelming response, so we're going to be extremely busy Saturday! In addition to the setup Friday, we will have a show-up time for 0700 with a pilot/ground team joint briefing at 0745, and a target flight start time of 0830. We ask that if you can help out Friday afternoon and/or Saturday, please give us a hand!? You'll be fed, provided safety vests (to be returned), and will have a fabulous time!? Yes, it can be quite busy and perhaps a bit tiring, but if you've never participated it is something you'll enjoy! Thanks for any assistance you and friends can offer.? Please reply to this email blast if you are able to help so we organizers can each get a head count for Friday and/or Saturday. Kind regards, Jim Quinn Chapter Secretary 903.746.0342 Cellular |

Please post this to your socials!
Hey guys! Please copy and paste the text below to your socials. If you have a copule pics of you and some kiddos flying (and permission use them!) please include those in your post!
Are your kids interested in flying? We are offering?FREE airplane rides?to kids ages 8-17. This event is being held in conjunction with the City of Gladewater's Airport Appreciation Day, so there will be lots of other fun activities even for those not participating in Young Eagle Flights! Where??Gladewater Municipal Airport
When??Saturday, May 20, 2023 08:30-11:30 AM
What is it??This event is sponsored by the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) and it is designed to allow kids to experience the miracle of flight from the cockpit of a real airplane! All of the participating aircraft and pilots are FAA certified and maintained according to the regulations set forth by the Federal Aviation Regulations. The pilots are all volunteers who donate their time and aircraft to this cause.
Your child will experience a 15-20 minute flight on Young Eagle Day. They will also receive a certificate and their very own log book to keep a record of their young eagle flights. The logbook can even be used for REAL flight training! There will be opportunities for photos before and after the flight and the pilot will sign the kiddo's log book at the end of the flight!

Mid-air collision C-172 vs drone (In Canada... not anywhere near here)
Friends, With my business, I'm often approached onsite at different locations by people who are interested in what I'm doing, and I'm appalled by those who approach me and start talking about their own drones and how/where they fly, etc. and ask about my experiences, taskings, and that sort of thing.? I'm stunned by the number of clueless individuals who are stunned that, for the flying they describe, they need to be licensed by the FAA to operate their drone equipment.? I take the time to express my opinions in plain English when I realize what they're doing is dangerous and/or illegal.? Since I've had my PPL since 5/14/81 and have the FAA Part 107 drone operators license I like to stay current with the rules and operations of drone activity and I also have the added responsibility and respect the fact that if I get a violation, it not only will show up on the drone side of things but could very, very easily affect my PPL privileges as well.? Airspace violations are airspace violations, and there is no way I want to have any violations on my records, especially for being stupid with the drone.? I am definitely heavily insured for my drone activities and for liability only, my premiums are more than $500/year so I don't want any increases... Having said all that, I did see a video that I want to pass on to everyone that concerns an aerial collision between a Canadian police drone and a C-172.? Both were flown legally? in the same airspace, however the police drone weighing 16 pounds (my own is less than two pounds), did some incredible damage to the Cessna.? I say the drone was being flown legally, but technically some officers were not properly briefed in their assignments to provide extra eyes for the drone operator since they were in the proximity of a small GA airport.? Some of you in our chapter have described drone encounters that were dumbfounding and downright scary, so I thought this safety video would be of interest, and this sort of incident is why I almost always have my radios in the car and my hand-held scanning the local freqs for any aviation activity nearby, especially helo ops. I hope you will take five minutes or so and see just how hard it is to see drones when you know they may be nearby, and realize how much damage they can do to aircraft.

Info about YE events/points on the EAA website, etc.
Fellow aviators,
I've received some information from Jimmy Chadwick over at Wood County.? I mentioned that any pilots who help us on our YE day 5/20 can keep their points, etc. and asked for his pilots from their YE event on 5/23 to help us out if they could.? Here are his responses: The points by default (from what I understand) are awarded to the chapter of the pilot’s choice by the “chapter” field in their profile. They can change this for each event they fly in, that’s what I understand anyway. As each event takes place, pilots and volunteers will move to the next. Has your coordinator requested pilots and volunteer from other Chapter’s through the YEDay site? If so, I’ve missed my invite. |

?
Young Eagle Coordinators,
?
Le Tourneau University has expressed interest in participating in our Young Eagles Rallies. ?Attached is an email I sent to them listing the requirements. I spoke with David Leiting at EAA headquarters regarding their interest in their participation and they are allowed to participate and they must meet the same requirements as anyone else. ?Brad is the chief pilot and Fred is the Dean of their department.?
?
?
Lupita?Begin forwarded message: Dear Brad, Thank you for your interest in participating in our Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) Young Eagles program. ?There are three upcoming rallies in this area and all of the chapters would love to have your participation. ?The first one is on Saturday April 15 at Sulphur Springs Airport from 8-2 and there are already 250 youngsters (ages 8-17) registered for this event; the second one is on Saturday May 13 at Wood County Airport from 8-2 and we will have 150 openings; the third one is at Gladewater Airport on Saturday May 20 from 8-12. The EAA criteria for the pilot is that they must be FAA certified, be a national EAA member($40), complete a Youth Protection Course and submit to a criminal background check. ?The course and the background check are listed on the EAA member profile page. ?There is no additional charge for the course or the background check. ?The background check takes about 7 days. Once everything is completed the EAA offers an additional one million in liability coverage for the pilot when flying the young eagles. The EAA criteria for the airplane is that it is registered with the FAA, is air worthy and has $100,000 in liability insurance for each seat. The EAA organization does not allow co-sponsorship of their Young Eagle events but we can distribute literature to the parents. The young eagle participant receives a brief ground school, ?a free 20 minute ride in an airplane, a certificate of completion, a paper logbook with an entry signed by the pilot, a free 6 month EAA membership, ?access to Sporty’s ground school, $130 towards their first flight lesson and up to $175 reimbursement if they pass the FAA written exam. Thank you very much for your interest in our EAA Young Eagles program. ??If any of your instructors are interested in setting up an EAA Chapter please let me know and we can do a presentation on the process of setting up a chapter.
