Daniel Y DNA Project at Family Tree DNA
I am one of the managers of the Daniel Y DNA Project at Family Tree DNA. I just discovered that between my domain host, Hover, and my local email client, Evolution, about all of the messages from Family Tree DNA, and even some from the contact links on the project web site, have been getting treated as spam or junk mail. My co-manager hasn't been logging into the account I set up for him at yahoo since I am now retired and have not needed his help for some time. It looks like most, if not all of the missing messages are making it to his account, though. I am using his account until/if I can get my account straightened out and he will now be logging into the account on the 1st day of each month since his account had been deactivated due to inactivity. We have also set up a regular meeting just to touch bases on what is going on with the project.
?
My question is, has anyone been experiencing issues with updates to the Results page of the project web site, response to queries to me or my co-manager, or issues, in general with the project? I am trying to figure out how long this has been going on and? make sure I am fixing the problem.

开云体育Hey Kevin,Looks like the last thing I have from you and the 开云体育 email was from March of 2022. ?So it’s been a hot minute lol Charlie Rathbun Knoxville, TN? Descendant of Martin Daniel Sr (ca 1750-1811) of Mecklenburg Co., VA.? On Nov 20, 2024, at 2:22?PM, Kevin Daniel <kevin@...> wrote:

Hi Bill,?
Thanks for your reply. If you give me your kit#, I would be happy to take a look at your results and see if I can provide an analysis of them. If you prefer, you can email me at the Y DNA project email address, jkdaniel48@...

Charles Rathbun: I checked my database and only have one Martin Daniel in it. He was b 12 May 1777 d 6 Jun 1828 and was the son of Elizabeth Key and Josiah Daniel.?
Kevin: Not sure how to change my email address for the group. It should be georgiacavanaugh@... now. The old one may disappear, but I don't know when exactly.?
Thank you,
Georgia

Hi Georgia! if you look in the upper right corner of the screen, you should see your name. Click on that and select Settings. The option to change your email address should be the first field at the top of that page. Let me know if you have any problems.

开云体育I know I have checked the project web page intermittently for years and it always seems inactive. Even today, the FamilyTreeDNA site says "Results pages are not currently enabled. Contact the group administrator for additional information.” if you try to access results there, and the??website is generally non-functional. None of the home page hyperlinks go anywhere. Will we actually see a functional means of working with Daniel Y-DNA in the future?Michael D. Hi Michael,
? ? ?The Daniel Y DNA Project has had a fully functional web site for over 20 years at as noted on the FTDNA web site. All of the links on the Daniel DNA web site are active and redirect to the appropriate web page. That being said, if a browser is set to block popups, opening new windows, etc., then users will need to right click on the link and select the appropriate option, i.e., "open link in new tab", "open link in new window", etc. That is not a problem with the web site, that is a browser configuration. The site has been modified several times to improve it and it is regularly updated to reflect new Y DNA results.
?
? ? Updates to the Results pages have been frozen for the past week, or so, due to an issue with FTDNA's new "Y DNA Results Overview" page which unintentionally deletes Y DNA results for folks who have imported non-FTDNA autosomal data. Once that is sorted, updates to the Results page will be resumed. FTDNA says that fixing this is a priority effort, so I expect it to be resolved shortly.
?
? ?The project website's functionality has been validated with numerous browsers; FireFox, Chrome, Windows, Seamonkey, Silk, etc. Also, there are two project managers for the web site who can assist site users, if they have any issues or questions.?
?
? ? Please let me or John know if you still have any problems accessing the pages of the project website, or any other questions, after fully examining the project website pages.?
?
? ? BTW, I have had a couple of requests to add a link to to the "DNA Information Links" page on the project web site, but the project does not host links to commercial genealogy services.?

开云体育Interesting. I tried the danieldna webpage on several browsers before I sent that last email and none of the links worked. Now they do.And my webpage has been defunct and out of date for some time now. I have no idea how you would have gotten a request to link unless it was a scambot, which is quite likely. Mike

As I recall, it was a lady and she contacted me a couple of times. I am sure that I deleted her emails, but they may still be in my Trash or Sent messages folder as I did respond to her. I can check, if you want. It was probably about two-three years ago, before I bought my second house.. though time flies when you are retired..... It would be in local files on my computer at my other house.
?
The entry page to the project has not changed in several years. My source files are at my other house, so I am not sure when the last change was made to that page. The file will have the last modified date in the metadata. The links on that page, themselves, have been unchanged for quite a few years longer than that. I think the last time I did a change to the page was wording of the text and maybe added a link to an empty table field. Several of the other pages have undergone some significant changes. I did spot a couple of links to my co-manager's old email address on a couple of pages and a bad FTDNA link that need to be fixed. I try to do modifications at my other house so I don't have a syncing problem. Next time I am there, I will clean those up. The only page I update at both houses is the Results page. I use Seamonkey, which has a WYSIWYG editor.

Cheers,

Hello Mr. Kevin Daniel, My husband's line is through James Simpson Daniel and Elizabeth Redwine. He does not carry the Daniel surname. I tried using the Daniel's website to learn more about his Daniel's line but the site does not work. Do you know of any other site that I can go to learn more about their DNA and where else they may have lived and if they came over from another country? I read somewhere that some of the Daniel's lived in Virginia. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated. Kindest Regards, Tia Sprague Gray

Hi Tia,
Your James Simpson Daniel has profiles on FamilySearch and WikiTree:
?
?
?
I manage his profile on WikiTree, not because I am related to him,?
as far as I am aware, but because his profile was orphaned, had no
manager. You can try contacting contributors to those profiles to see if any of them have done DNA testing. There are no DNA links to his profile on WikiTree.
?
I assume that the website you are referring to is is that correct? If so, the site is working but your browser may have security settings that prevent redirecting from the links to the pages. Try mousing over a link you wish to visit and clicking your right mouse button, if you are on a computer. That will bring up a drop down menu that lets you open a new browser tab, new window, etc. If you want to avoid this issue with this and other sites, you can enable popups and new windows in the security settings for your browser.
?
If you are using a tablet, phone, etc., to view the site, then just press and hold the link and you should get the opportunity to select viewing options. You can also enable popups, new windows, etc., on browser security settings on those devices.
?
Let me know if you need further assistance with that. Out of curiosity, what kind of device are you using to access the web site?
?
No one participating in the Daniel Y DNA Project has listed James Simpson Daniel as an ancestor. Since your husband is not a Daniel, your best option to find a DNA connection is probably through a site that uses autosomal DNA, like Ancestry.com or MyHeritage.com. I was a subscriber to Ancestry.com for many years and had some success using their autosomal DNA test. That being said, autosomal DNA is only really reliable if your connection lived in the past 4-5 generations. Reliability of matches is also problematic based on the generally poor quality of family trees on these autosomal DNA testing providers' sites.
?
I have not used MyHeritage autosomal DNA testing but have observed that the quality of family trees on that site is comparable to trees on Ancestry, which is to say poor. I do not know how good their tools are for managing autosomal DNA. Ancestry's tools are pretty good. Just today, I got a promotional offer of $29 for autosomal DNA testing from MyHeritage. Ancestry may also have some seasonal sales.?
?
Let me know if you need further assistance.
?
You may get some comments from this post, but I suggest that you create a new post with your ancestor's name and dates in the subject line and information about him in the body? of the post.
?
?Let me know if you need assistance with that. I sent most of this data to your email address, if you want to take this off line. I can also send you my phone number if you need me to walk you through any of this.?

Not sure why this message is showing up out of the thread and also in the thread below. Maybe something embedded in the original post?? |
Here is a link to the Ancestry Message Boards. You can search on surname groups and find the Daniel, Daniels, etc., boards. This used to be easy to find on the Ancestry main page but I haven't been able to find it there, recently. It is free, for now, no membership is needed to view or post to it.
?
?
There used to be an extensive Daniel surname discussion group at Rootsweb.com, but Ancestry reneged on its promise to maintain it and it is gone. There were still some vestiges of the Genforum discussion groups online, which could be found using various search engines but I have not looked for those recently.
