Ed --

? ? ?So this "double-header" went south from Watertown to DeWitt in 4 hours when it took 12 hours to come north! ?An ore train needing 2 locos? ?And staying on the main track when meeting any north-bounds?

? ? ?How much notice did he get that he was no longer going to be employed by the NYC?

? ? Is there any indication when the last steam-powered train worked the St. Lawrence Division?

Dave,
?
I'm guessing they were just moving power around to where they needed it. "Lite" means there was no train. Just engines.
?
As for a "heads up" before being furloughed, I doubt it. Back then it wasn't a consideration. I'm sure he could see it coming because there would have been less senior men getting furloughed before him.
?
I really have no idea when the last steam ran on the St. Lawrence Division. You might try NYC-Railroad on this site. Someone out there may know.

I do not know the exact date of the last steam operation on the St. Lawrence Division, but the book "Hojack" documents the month as October 1948, which includes this date. That's when the Alco FA's began running on BP-1 and PB-2 (Benson Mines - Pittsburgh). One advantage of the diesels was that they could also be and were used on the daily turn of PB-2 BP-1 from Watertown (Massey Yard) to Benson Mines and Newton Falls (paper mill) and return, while L-2's were restricted from the Newton Falls Branch. I rode the engine on that BP-1 turn from Harrisville to Massey Yard one afternoon in 1965, with two FA's.
