The astronomers found that, based on the latest observational data from Hubble as well as the Gaia space telescope, there is only a 50-50 chance of the two galaxies colliding within the next 10 billion years. The study also found that the presence of the Large Magellanic Cloud can affect the trajectory of the Milky Way and make the collision less likely. The researchers emphasize that predicting the long-term future of galaxy interactions is highly uncertain, but the new findings challenge the previous consensus and suggest the fate of the Milky Way remains an open question. Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (6/02/2025): Veil Nebula: Wisps of an Ancient Supernova
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 June 2 Veil Nebula: Wisps of an Ancient Supernova Image Credit & Copyright: Abdullah Alharbi Explanation: Wisps like this are all that remain visible of a Milky Way star. About 7,000 years ago that star exploded in a supernova, leaving the Veil Nebula. At the time, the expanding cloud was likely as bright as a crescent Moon, remaining visible for weeks to people living at the dawn of recorded history. Today, the resulting supernova remnant, also known as the Cygnus Loop, has faded and is now visible only through a small telescope directed toward the constellation of the Swan (Cygnus). The remaining Veil Nebula is physically huge, however, and even though it lies about 1,400 light-years distant, it covers over five times the size of the full Moon. The featured picture was taken in Kuwait in mid-2024 and features light emitted by hydrogen in red and oxygen in blue. In deep images of the complete Veil Nebula like this, even studious readers might not be able to identify the iconic filaments. Four female eastern lowland gorillas are roaming free in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, marking the largest reintroduction of the subspecies in history, the conservation organization Re:wild announced last week. ? The ape reintroduction breakthrough was long in the making for the primates, named Isangi, Lulingu, Mapendo, and Ndjingala. As babies, they were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade and taken to Congo¡¯s Gorilla Rehabilitation and Conservation Education Center, or GRACE. Following years of rehab, they were deemed ready for the wild last fall and airlifted to the park, where they were kept in a fenced enclosure before being released in December. ? ¡°It happened much quicker than we all anticipated,¡± Katie Fawcett, executive and science director for GRACE Gorillas, told CNN, explaining that a male silverback named Mwasa courted the females from behind the fence, helping move things along. She continued: ¡°We really pride ourselves on every decision being gorilla led. After three days of attention directed at the magnificent Mwasa ¡ the decision was made: ¡®Let¡¯s go for it.¡¯ The fence was cut so they could come out.¡± ? A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg There was a time I went to the movies several times a week. Comedy, romance, adventure, biopics... anything was fair game, except horror. I prefer my heart rate below 180. There¡¯s something magical about how, in just two hours, they conjure a whole world, introduce characters, raise the stakes, resolve it all (mostly), and still leave time for end credits and a catchy theme song. On the way home, my writer¡¯s gears would start whirring like a vintage film reel, analyzing the plot, the pacing, the performances. Who nailed it? Who phoned it in? And how would I rewrite the ending? Then came Covid, and my ticket stubs were replaced by running shoes and later dance shoes. This week, we¡¯ll roll the reel on five words with ties to the silver screen, some coined by films, some spotlighted by them, others straight out of the movie biz.
