Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (6/01/2025): UGC 1810: Wildly Interacting Galaxy from Hubble
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 June 1 UGC 1810: Wildly Interacting Galaxy from Hubble Image Credit: NASA, ESA, Hubble, HLA; Processing & Copyright: Domingo Pestana Explanation: What's happening to this spiral galaxy? Although details remain uncertain, it surely has to do with an ongoing battle with its smaller galactic neighbor. The featured galaxy is labelled UGC 1810 by itself, but together with its collisional partner is known as Arp 273. The overall shape of UGC 1810 -- in particular its blue outer ring -- is likely a result of wild and violent gravitational interactions. This ring's blue color is caused by massive stars that are blue hot and have formed only in the past few million years. The inner galaxy appears older, redder, and threaded with cool filamentary dust. A few bright stars appear well in the foreground, unrelated to UGC 1810, while several galaxies are visible well in the background. Arp 273 lies about 300 million light years away toward the constellation of Andromeda. Quite likely, UGC 1810 will devour its galactic sidekick over the next billion years and settle into a classic spiral form. Here¡¯s a selection. I say Richards¡¯. Why? Because that¡¯s what my (late) Mom would say. Mom was The Apostrophe Queen. Even in her last years, when dementia had dulled her faculties significantly, she would spot and deplore out loud any misplaced apostrophe on a restaurant menu, shop awning, or sign. Debate all you want, but Mom rules. -Ellen D. Murphy, Portland, Maine (radochas gmail.com) As an English composition and medical punctuation workshop instructor, I always taught that if adding an apostrophe does NOT add another pronounced syllable, then simply add the apostrophe with no following ¡®s¡¯: in, say, the phrase ¡°Mary Richards¡¯ popularity¡±, ¡°Richards¡¯¡± is usually pronounced as just two syllables; same with ¡°Lizzie¡¯s popularity¡±. But if adding an apostrophe DOES add another pronounced syllable, then follow the apostrophe with an ¡®s¡¯: ¡°Liz¡¯s popularity¡±, ¡°Christmas¡¯s popularity¡±. Of course, people -- and contexts -- don¡¯t always agree whether or not adding an apostrophe (especially to a z-sound-ending noun) adds a new pronounced syllable: ¡°Jesus¡¯s life¡± vs. ¡°in Jesus¡¯ name¡±. It seemed to help my students if I gleefully jammed, into one example sentence, illustrations of the bothersome point: ¡°Richard¡¯s and Chris¡¯s shared goal was to emulate Mary Richards¡¯ iconic TV smile -- a goal that all the Richards and Chrises and wannabe Mary Richardses of the world might enjoy; but perplexed by their memories of past Christmases and by Christmas¡¯s continuing popularity, Richard and Chris were not sure about Jesus¡¯s vs. Santa Claus¡¯s smiles.¡± -Mary E. Knatterud, Minneapolis, Minnesota (knattm3 gmail.com) It can¡¯t be simply ¡°Richard¡±, because that¡¯s actually dropping a letter of his name. It can¡¯t be Richards with no apostrophe, because that calls for ¡°the¡± in front to make it a qualifier rather than a possessive: ¡°the Richards legacy¡±. That leaves Richards¡¯ as you used it or Richards¡¯s. In my view, the governing principle here, evolved through common usage, is how it rolls off the tongue when there¡¯s already an s sound at the end. Roger Maris¡¯s legacy is a home run record that lasted over 60 years. Extra s, si! Fred Mertz¡¯s legacy is as an iconic supporting character for Lucy Ricardo. Extra s, si! [He] revived the Society to carry [on] Richards¡¯s legacy. Extra s, no! The first s being preceded by a d is converted to a z sound, making two separate z sounds in a row when the possessive apostrophe s is added. Too hard to say in a multi-syllable word, doesn¡¯t sound right. -Steve Benko, New York, New York (stevebenko1 gmail.com) What became known as the greengrocer¡¯s apostrophe was seen in signs outside greengrocers¡¯ shops in England when I lived there in the sixties. Ripe tomatoe¡¯s three shillings a pound Cheap banana¡¯s Juicy orange¡¯s You¡¯ve no idea what a fight I had with Grammarly (to fix three errors press tab) to leave those three apostrophes alone. -Barbara Bushby, Longmont, Colorado (bushmikk gmail.com) Some of us will always need apostrophes. -Sandy D¡¯Amato, Memphis, Tennessee (sdamato100 aol.com) Here¡¯s a rule breaker f

Fw: Unity In Jesus Respects Our Individuality
2
From: Gregory Fry Today's Scripture: Lifting up His eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying: ¡°Holy Father, I pray not only for them, but also for those who will believe in Me through their word, so that they may all be one, as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, that the world may believe that You sent Me. And I have given them the glory You gave Me, so that they may be one, as We are one, I in them and You in Me, that they may be brought to perfection as one, that the world may know that You sent Me, and that You loved them even as You loved Me. "Father, they are Your gift to Me. I wish that where I Am they also may be with Me, that they may see My glory that You gave Me, because You loved Me before the foundation of the world. Righteous Father, the world also does not know You, but I know You, and they know that You sent Me. I made known to them Your name and I will make it known, that the love with which You loved Me may be in them and I in them.¡± --John 17:20-26 **** Many congregations in my denomination celebrate today as Ascension Sunday, and if your denomination and/or congregation does so as well, the Gospel selection will of course be different--and even more so if your congregation/denomination has a different method for selecting scriptures to be read. May we all celebrate our unity in diversity--the theme of today's sermon/reflection! **** Jesus is praying to the Father. It is the night of the last supper. Jesus has shared a meal with His disciples, washed their feet, given them a new commandment to love one another as He loves, and told them of His impending departure. Now he prays. In today¡¯s gospel, we overhear a portion of His prayer to His Father and our Father. He prays for us. Three times, He asks our Father that we would all become one as He and the Father are one. But how so? How CAN this be so? The disciples are a disparate lot. They all are Jews and all happen to be Galileans--Judas was the only exception to the latter, and he had already skulked off to betray Jesus at this point--but even within the commonality the others share, they are about as diverse as you might imagine. One disciple among the Twelve was Simon the Zealot. Nothing else is known about him other than his being a "zealot," which tells us quite a bit. It means he was a revolutionary promoting the violent overthrow of the hated Roman occupiers. But also there was Matthew, who had been a tax collector in service to those Roman occupiers. James and John were known as the "sons of thunder," which does not portend that they were in any way "get along to get along" sorts--but perhaps others were. Finally, there is Peter--both impetuous and mercurial--who nonetheless possessed natural leadership skills, despite his many blunders. Overall, a motley crew indeed--all of whom were flawed humans unprepared at this point for the challenges of the turmoils they were about to face. Unity? Not looking much like that at all, as we might define such! What was true of the Disciples is, of course, true of us. There are differences in perspective among us. How are we to deal with that? I'll depart for the moment to share a bit of humor. A politician is approached by one of their constituents with one of those dreaded divisive issues that will alienate either one constituency or another. The question: "What is your stance on alcohol?" After squirming a bit, the "solution" came to them: "If you're referring to that demon drink that leads to drunken rage and the destruction of families and loved ones--I'm against it!" "If you're referring to that sweet nectar that leads to relaxation, warmth, friendship, and forgiveness--I'm for it!" Please let me assure everyone that, in no way, am I interested in weighing in on either side, nor is it my intention to provoke interdenominational discord over this issue. Neither am I claiming that there is no "right" or "wrong" answer to this or any other issue. This is, however, an example of a matter of perspective--and assuming that one draws their conclusion honestly from their expe
