Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (5/10/2025): Yogi and Friends in 3D
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 May 10 Yogi and Friends in 3D Image Credit: Mars Pathfinder Mission, JPL, NASA Explanation: This picture from July 1997 shows a ramp from the Pathfinder lander, the Sojourner robot rover, deflated landing airbags, a couch, Barnacle Bill and Yogi Rock appear together in this 3D stereo view of the surface of Mars. Barnacle Bill is the rock just left of the house cat-sized, solar-paneled Sojourner. Yogi is the big friendly-looking boulder at top right. The "couch" is the angular rock shape visible near center on the horizon. Look at the image with red/blue glasses (or just hold a piece of clear red plastic over your left eye and blue or green over your right) to get the dramatic 3D perspective. The stereo view was recorded by the remarkable Imager for Mars Pathfinder (IMP) camera. The IMP had two optical paths for stereo imaging and ranging and was equipped with an array of color filters for spectral analysis. Operating as the first astronomical observatory on Mars, the IMP also recorded images of the Sun and Deimos, the smallest of Mars' two tiny moons. Inspiring Quotes for Saturday, May 10, 2025
I believe, every day, you should have at least one exquisite moment. ~ Audrey Hepburn Actress and humanitarian Audrey Hepburn remains one of the greatest icons of 20th-century Hollywood. She won an Academy Award for her first major film, "Roman Holiday," stunned the masses in haute-couture comedies like "Sabrina" and "Breakfast at Tiffany¡¯s," and conveyed a natural sense of grace all her life. Yet before her glitzy career, as a young girl in Nazi-occupied Belgium, Hepburn was a Resistance courier who often teetered on the brink of starvation. (This informed her work as a UNICEF ambassador decades later.) Her wisdom here stems from the knowledge that life's exquisite moments can be fleeting and should be cherished. Creating that momentary beauty and stillness for ourselves can help us push forward, even through the hardest times. Mary Live long and prosper

There¡¯s currently one vaccine for preventing tick-borne illness, but it only protects against encephalitis. Thankfully, a recent study on animal resistance may help pave the way for broader and more effective options. ? In the research, scientists from Washington State University sought the answer to the question: How do host animals react to tick bites? They found that not only did the deer mice, rabbits, and cattle they studied develop resistance to bites, but as a result, the tick population ¡°dramatically shrank,¡± per a news release. Additional simulations found that population growth could be reduced by as much as 68%. ? This is a crucial discovery because, as study co-author Jeb Owen explained, fewer ticks mean fewer cases of tick-borne disease. ¡°A lot of attention goes into trying to figure out what makes tick populations increase or decrease ¡ª what makes them more abundant here and less abundant there?¡± he said. ¡°If we understand those phenomena, we can try to find ways to take advantage of that to limit tick-associated problems.¡± ? ?April through September is tick season (unfortunately): Get tips for preventing bites.?
