Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (5/21/2025): International Space Station Crosses the Sun
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 May 21 International Space Station Crosses the Sun Image Credit & Copyright: Pau Montplet Sanz Explanation: Typically, the International Space Station is visible only at night. Slowly drifting across the night sky as it orbits the Earth, the International Space Station (ISS) can be seen as a bright spot about once a month from many locations. The ISS is then visible only just after sunset or just before sunrise because it shines by reflected sunlight -- once the ISS enters the Earth's shadow, it will drop out of sight. The only occasion when the ISS is visible during the day is when it passes right in front of the Sun. Then, it passes so quickly that only cameras taking short exposures can visually freeze the ISS's silhouette onto the background Sun. The featured picture did exactly that -- it is actually a series of images taken a month ago from Sant Feliu de Buixalleu, Spain with perfect timing. This image series was later combined with a separate image highlighting the texture of the active Sun which included several Sun's prominences around the edge. Inspiring Quotes for Wednesday, May 21, 2025
Love A moment of self-compassion can change your entire day. A string of such moments can change the course of your life.~ Christopher Germer Christopher Germer Clinical psychologist (Unknown-present) Psychologist Christopher Germer was introduced to the concept of radical self-compassion in the early 2000s while searching for solutions to his public speaking anxiety, which led him to explore Sri Lankan mindfulness meditation. Germer turned his studies of self-compassion into a popular training program and book, ¡°The Mindful Path to Self-Compassion.¡± The 2009 book compares practicing emotional self-compassion to, say, bandaging a cut finger. This quote from the book summates Germer¡¯s entire thesis: Being patient, considerate, and gentle toward oneself not only has the ability to turn a bad day into a good one, but it also holds the power to completely transform your life and your relationship to yourself and the world. In Germer¡¯s own words: ¡°Freeing yourself from the trap of destructive thoughts and emotions ¡ can boost your self-esteem from the inside out. Self-compassion is the foundation of compassion for others.¡± Mary Live long and prosper

That¡¯s according to a recent study, which found that sources of natural hydrogen could be lodged in the Earth¡¯s crust, and, if harnessed properly, could be a clean power gold mine. ? While hydrogen power has been gathering steam for years, the formula for tapping into the energy source cleanly has been tough to nail down, until now. Scientists from the University of Oxford, Durham University, and the University of Toronto believe they¡¯ve found an ¡°exploration recipe¡± to find natural hydrogen reservoirs, which are likely located all over the world, including under at least 30 U.S. states, ABC News reports. ? The key geological ingredients include hydrogen itself, reservoir rocks, and a formation that prevents the gas from escaping. But the recipe is less of a one-pot dish and, rather, ¡°likened to cooking a souffl¨¦,¡± lead author Chris Ballentine said in a statement. ¡°Get any one of the ingredients, amounts, timing, or temperature wrong and you will be disappointed.¡± ? But with the clock ticking to find reliable climate solutions, the researchers say getting cooking could be well worth the effort to keep the modern world functioning for many, many years to come. ¡°One successful exploration recipe that is repeatable will unlock a commercially competitive, low-carbon hydrogen source that would significantly contribute to the energy transition,¡± said Ballentine.
