Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (5/07/2025): Galaxy Wars: M81 versus M82
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 May 7 Galaxy Wars: M81 versus M82 Image Credit & Copyright: Collaborative Astrophotography Team (CAT) Explanation: In the upper left corner, surrounded by blue arms and dotted with red nebulas, is spiral galaxy M81. In the lower right corner, marked by a light central line and surrounded by red glowing gas, is irregular galaxy M82. This stunning vista shows these two mammoth galaxies locked in gravitational combat, as they have been for the past billion years. The gravity from each galaxy dramatically affects the other during each hundred-million-year pass. Last go-round, M82's gravity likely raised density waves rippling around M81, resulting in the richness of M81's spiral arms. But M81 left M82 with violent star forming regions and colliding gas clouds so energetic the galaxy glows in X-rays. This big battle is seen from Earth through the faint glow of an Integrated Flux Nebula, a little studied complex of diffuse gas and dust clouds in our Milky Way Galaxy. In a few billion years, only one galaxy will remain. Fw: DID YOU KNOW
From: Wolfie Benjamin Franklin: American polymath, writer, scientist, inventor, political philosopher, Founding Father of the United States and of¡ wearable tech? From the light bulb dress to the galvanic belt, the lightning rod cap to the lightning rod umbrella, fashionable society was charged with a new electric glamour in the late 1700s. The hats and umbrellas were most popular in France, and particularly so in fashionable Paris. Franklin¡¯s lightning rod technology and discoveries were a hot topic in European salons; electricity was a new, mysterious, and magical force, an explosive, vigorous power that could also light up the world of couture. Electrical fashion took off in the mid-1800s after Gustav Trouv¨¦ invented the pocket battery. Attached to see better. _._,_._,_ Mary Live long and prosper

Fw: DID YOU KNOW?
From: Wolfie The first official U.S. coin said ¡°Mind Your Business¡± on it. In 1787, the United States was still in its infancy and was figuring out, along with many other things, its national currency. That year, Congress approved the first official U.S. coin for circulation: the Fugio cent. The copper coin, believed to have been designed by Benjamin Franklin, came with a curt piece of advice: ¡°Mind Your Business.¡± It wasn¡¯t meant as a slight: Taken together with the picture of a sundial and the Latin word Fugio, meaning ¡°run¡± or ¡°flee,¡± it¡¯s been interpreted to mean ¡°time flies, so take care of your affairs.¡± The reverse side of the coin featured 13 linked rings representing the 13 colonies becoming united as a nation, surrounding the motto ¡°We Are One.¡± The Fugio cent was made by a private contractor for just one year; in 1792, the Coinage Act was passed and the U.S. Mint was established. Inspiring Quotes for Wednesday, May 07, 2025
Write relentlessly, until you find your voice. Then, use it. ~ David Sedaris David Sedaris wrote every day for 15 years before his first collection of stories and essays was published in 1994. Since then, he¡¯s authored and collaborated on over a dozen books, every one of them full of hilarious insight. His distinct, observant satire dives deep into the ridiculous nuances of everyday life, often revealing surprising truths and heartbreaking vulnerability. No one tells a story quite like Sedaris, who insists that he would still be scribbling away even if he had never seen his words in print. Mary Live long and prosper
