Inspiring Quotes for Saturday, May 03, 2025
Falsehood is so easy, truth so difficult. George Eliot George Eliot, born Mary Ann Evans in 1819, chose to write under a male pen name for two reasons: She wanted to avoid the stereotype of women¡¯s writing of her day, and sought to protect herself from the scandal of being an unmarried woman living with a married man. Truth, in her personal life, was indeed difficult ¡ª but truth was also of vital importance to Eliot, even in her fiction. Her novels, including "Middlemarch" and "Silas Marner," were a realistic portrayal of life, full of detailed depictions and psychological insight. As she once wrote, ¡°I aspire to give no more than a faithful account of men and things as they have mirrored themselves in my mind.¡± Mary Live long and prosper

News Articles Shop Account The Further Adventures¡ªand Final Journey¡ªof Apollonius of Tyana (Part II) The wise men of India left behind, Apollonius and his fellow travelers boarded a ship, whose sails brought them past the mouth of the Indus, to an island with rocks and sand of the purest bronze, past the fish-eaters who adorned themselves with the skin of large fish, and the island of a most loathsome nereid who spent her days abducting sailors. They sailed up the Euphrates, visiting Nineveh, Antioch, and a dear old friend, one whom he had promised a gift, King Verdanes of Babylon. From there, the travelers embarked on a new ship, headed for Ionia. The city of Ephesus closed its business doors, the oracles gathered, and all hailed the arrival of the illustrious Apollonius. But the wise nomad did not come bearing good news; he came to warn of a devastating plague. Parting them with careful instruction, he left for Smyrna to advise the people on the value of oneself rather than the value placed on the elegance of their city. Unfortunately, the ravenous plague had finally reached Ephesus, and with a single phrase of haste, Apollonius miraculously vanished and reappeared in the midst of chaos. Frightened pleas descended upon Apollonius as he entered the amphitheater to confront the cause. Gazing around the room, he spotted a peculiar elderly man, a demon in disguise. Apollonius¡¯ booming voice stilled the room, all eyes focused on the suspicious figure. Skin and limbs contorting, the once elderly man howled into a blood-thirsty dog to which Apollonius instantly destroyed, and with its demise, the plague was gone. Satisfied, Apollonius left to pay respects to the many fallen legends of the Trojan War and to find the tomb of the celebrated Palamedes, inventor of dice, letters, and numbers, who was falsely accused of treason during the war and stoned to death. His search proved fruitful; the tomb of Palamedes had been found. Overjoyed, Apollonius gave reason for his search, professing to his companions that in another life, he was this great man. Soon, the travelers found themselves in Athens. Apollonius wished to join the Eleusinian Mysteries, but was denied for his apparent dabbling in the rites of others. No matter, a few short years later, the new head priest welcomed him into the mysteries anyway. Those short years waiting was spent encouraging alternative forms of worship absent sacrifice and libation, reviving the Festival of Dionysus, and exercising a demon from a child. Yet, trouble had begun to brew in Rome. In 66, Nero passed a decree: condemnation and prosecution of all who practiced philosophy. Apollonius had only recently departed Sparta, having to intervene in a feud that divided its people, one maliciously perpetuated by Nero. Upon hearing of the imprisonment of a Babylonian friend, Apollonius set sail. Of the thirty-four men onboard, only eight were brave enough to set foot on Roman soil alongside the highly recognizable and now, according to Nero, notorious philosopher Apollonius. A Prayer for a Just King Apollonius entered Rome with little regard for what Nero and his men might do. He welcomed himself to the many temples of the city, giving citizens a desperately needed sense of spirituality and security. His presence drew attention, and with it came the chief henchman of Nero, who swiftly arrested him on charges of impiety, a direct insult to the emperor. Once in custody, the henchman was handed the scroll of charges against Apollonius, but upon unrolling it, the scroll was blank. He had no choice but to release him. Continue reading... Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (5/02/2025): Young Star Cluster NGC 346
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 May 2 Young Star Cluster NGC 346 Science - NASA, ESA, CSA, Olivia C. Jones (UK ATC), Guido De Marchi (ESTEC), Margaret Meixner (USRA) Processing - Alyssa Pagan (STScI), Nolan Habel (USRA), Laura Lenki? (USRA), Laurie E. U. Chu (NASA Ames) Explanation: The most massive young star cluster in the Small Magellanic Cloud is NGC 346, embedded in our small satellite galaxy's largest star forming region some 210,000 light-years distant. Of course the massive stars of NGC 346 are short lived, but very energetic. Their winds and radiation sculpt the edges of the region's dusty molecular cloud triggering star-formation within. The star forming region also appears to contain a large population of infant stars. A mere 3 to 5 million years old and not yet burning hydrogen in their cores, the infant stars are strewn about the embedded star cluster. This spectacular infrared view of NGC 346 is from the James Webb Space Telescope's NIRcam. Emission from atomic hydrogen ionized by the massive stars' energetic radiation as well as molecular hydrogen and dust in the star-forming molecular cloud is detailed in pink and orange hues. Webb's sharp image of the young star-forming region spans 240 light-years at the distance of the Small Magellanic Cloud.
