Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/17/2025): Virgo Cluster Galaxies
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 17 Virgo Cluster Galaxies Image Credit & Copyright: Daniel Adibi Explanation: Galaxies of the Virgo Cluster are scattered across this nearly 4 degree wide telescopic field of view. About 50 million light-years distant, the Virgo Cluster is the closest large galaxy cluster to our own local galaxy group. Prominent here are Virgo's bright elliptical galaxies from the Messier catalog, M87 at bottom left, and M86 and M84 near center right. M86 and M84 are recognized as part of Markarian's Chain, the visually striking line-up of galaxies on the that runs through the upper portion of this frame. Near the middle of the chain lies an intriguing interacting pair of galaxies, NGC 4438 and NGC 4435, known to some as Markarian's Eyes. Still, giant elliptical galaxy M87 dominates the Virgo cluster. It's the home of a super massive black hole, the first black hole ever imaged by planet Earth's Event Horizon Telescope. Inspiring Quotes for Thursday, April 17, 2025
Attention is a moral act: It creates, brings aspects of things into being. Iain McGilchrist British psychiatrist, neuroscientist, and philosopher Iain McGilchrist contemplates the morality of attention in his 2009 book ¡°The Master and His Emissary: The Divided Brain and the Making of the Western World.¡± In his writing, he suggests the effects of attention are cyclical: The attention we give something affects how we perceive it, and vice versa. McGilchrist¡¯s research in brain lateralization (i.e., how the left and right hemispheres of our brains each function) raises questions about how we choose to make sense of the world around us. Most notably, this quote serves as a stark reminder that our attention has the power to inform our inner and outer worlds, and we must wield that power wisely. Mary Live long and prosper

Fw: Jesus Demonstrates Love And Servanthood
From: Gregory Fry As we approach the Easter celebration on Sunday, I will be sending out what I hope will be daily reflections for today, tomorrow and Saturday in addition to what I hope will be my Sunday sermon/reflection. Today is celebrated as Holy Thursday in many churches, and I'll reference one Scripture passage read in many churches on this occasion this year: Before the feast of the Passover, Jesus, knowing that His time had come that He would depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end. During supper, the devil--having already put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon¡¯s son, to betray Him--Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He came from God, and was going to God, arose from supper and laid aside His outer garments. He took a towel, and wrapped it around His waist. Then He poured water into a basin, and began to wash the disciples¡¯ feet, and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around Him. Then He came to Simon Peter who said to Him, ¡°Lord, do you wash my feet?¡± Jesus answered him, ¡°You don¡¯t know what I Am doing now, but you will understand later.¡± Peter said to Him, ¡°You will never wash my feet!¡± Jesus answered him, ¡°If I don¡¯t wash you, you have no part with Me.¡± Simon Peter said to Him, ¡°Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!¡± Jesus said to him, ¡°Someone who has bathed only needs to have his feet washed, but is completely clean. You are clean, but not all of you.¡± For He knew him who would betray Him, therefore He said, ¡°You are not all clean.¡± So when He had washed their feet, put His outer garment back on, and sat down again, He said to them, ¡°Do you know what I have done to you? You call me, ¡®Teacher¡¯ and ¡®Lord.¡¯ You say so correctly, for so I Am. If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another¡¯s feet. For I have given you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you." -John 13:1-15 We can all probably relate to Linus in the ¡°Peanuts¡± cartoon strip when he shouts in frustration, ¡°I love mankind; it¡¯s people I can¡¯t stand!¡± It¡¯s easy to love the human race in the abstract, but when it comes to loving specific people who, like us, have their own faults and foibles, and might often irritate us or rub us the wrong way--those who might even be our enemies and wish us ill--the process becomes a lot more difficult! What the Gospel of John chose to mention of the Last Supper differs somewhat from that of the Synoptic Gospels, and serves as an introduction to Jesus's lengthy last discourse to His disciples. The Synoptic Gospels' accounts of the Last Supper are less detailed for the most part, yet provide information not mentioned in John. One such matter was a great squabble which broke out among the Apostles as to which of them was the "greatest", followed by Jesus's teaching that the greatest is the one who serves others, not one who seeks self-glory (cf. Mt 20:25-27 and Lk 22:24-30). I think it's important to consider the context of that dispute in terms of today's lesson. Jesus not only teaches by word but by example what servant hood in God's Kingdom is about. Jesus probably quietly began this task while the squabble was going on. Few jobs could then be considered more menial and degrading than washing another's feet--so much so that only Gentile indentured servants could be required to do so--yet Jesus does so Himself for all of His apostles, including Judas! Jesus breaks bread with all of His apostles at this Passover celebration--including Judas! Jesus even makes it possible for Judas to leave discretely and not call attention to himself from the others in doing so. Even Judas--whom Jesus knew would betray Him--experiences Jesus's love and generosity. When Jesus washed the feet of His disciples He was demonstrating unconditional love. Later in this chapter Jesus said these words; ¡°A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; even as I have loved you, that you also love one another. By this all men (and wo

Since that initial finding in 1925, when a fisherman came upon remains inside the belly of a sperm whale, there have only been eight confirmed colossal squid sightings, and all have been postmortem, according to the Museum of New Zealand. ? That makes the new recording, captured by a team aboard the Schmidt Ocean Institute¡¯s research vessel, pretty exceptional ¡ª and to make it even better, the squid caught on camera was a baby. ¡°It¡¯s exciting to see the first in situ footage of a juvenile colossal and humbling to think that they have no idea that humans exist,¡± Kat Bolstad, one of the independent scientific experts the institute consulted to verify the footage, said in a statement. ? The young animal also appears transparent in the footage, something that goes away with age ¡ª but little else is known about the species¡¯ life cycle. ¡°These unforgettable moments continue to remind us that the ocean is brimming with mysteries yet to be solved,¡± said Schmidt Ocean Institute Executive Director Jyotika Virmani. Fw: Survivor reveals third round of fan voting categories for season 50
From: Sharon Pohlman 'Survivor' reveals third round of fan voting categories for season 50 Survivor reveals third round of fan voting categories for season 50 How twisty do you like your "Survivor"? Time to vote and find out. By Dalton Ross Published on April 16, 2025 While one Survivor 48 player will win the coveted immunity necklace on tonight¡¯s episode, fans will actually be able to vote on the look of the season 50 immunity necklace, making the island jewelry the latest design element viewers can control. (Fans also decided the tribe colors in the first round of voting.) The necklace itself may not impact the actual gameplay, but the other categories open for voting will. Viewers will also vote on if the players will be given supplies like a pot, machete, and flint as in early seasons, or if they will have to earn them via a challenge, task, or some other method, as has become standard in the post-Winners at War new era of the show. The final category open for voting is sure to be the one most open to debate among fans, as the question centers around just how twisty they want Survivor 50 to be. Do they want lots of twists thrown in to shake things up, or would they prefer to see a pure, old-school Survivor experience? The third category takes aim at that, posing the following question to fans: ¡°The right twist at the right moment can change the game for players in exciting ways. But some fans prefer a more straightforward game where strategic alliances are all that matter. Which are you?¡± That question mirrors earlier categories that have asked fans whether they want more of what they have seen in the extra crispy new era, or if they would prefer a return to the classic Survivor recipe. During the last round, viewers voted on just how powerful they wanted advantages to be, and in the first round, they voted between the final four fire-making competition and Fiji-set after-show off the island and an old-school, regular final four Tribal Council and a live reunion show in Los Angeles.Of course, the players won¡¯t know what the fans have chosen until they hit the island in a few months. We have to imagine they are hoping for all the free rice and tribe supplies they can get. But will viewers oblige? Mary Live long and prosper

In one group, David Kinne earned individual immunity and voted with four others to eliminate Cedrek McFadden, making him the first member of the jury that will decide the ultimate winner. In the other group, Joe Hunter had immunity for himself and because of a Block a Vote advantage used on her by Mitch Guerra, Saiounia "Sai" Hughley was voted out unanimously with the unlucky timing of not advancing far enough to make the jury. This week, the 10 remaining players come back together as one merged tribe and vote to send another player out of the game and on to the jury. Read on for our recap of Survivor Season 48, Episode 8, titled "A Rift Between All of Us," which aired Wednesday, April 16 on CBS. The players still competing to become "sole Survivor" at the start of the episode were: Chrissy Sarnowsky, David Kinne, Eva Erickson, Joe Hunter, Kamilla Karthigesu, Kyle Fraser, Mary Zheng, Mitch Guerra, Shauhin Davari, and Star Toomey. The members of the jury that will decide the winner are: Cedrek McFadden. "Somebody eat with me!" ¡ª Mitch Guerra With the split Tribal event behind them, Joe and Shauhin got together for a debrief on their lessons learned. Shauhin saw his name written down for the first time, but explained to his closest ally Joe that he didn't believe Kamilla and Kyle were ever seriously considering getting rid of him instead of Cedrek. He did, however, feel like he got a glimpse into just how close David and Mary are and passed along David's wish that they continue to work with Kyle and bring Mary in as a sixth. Shauhin recognized that he prefers Kamilla because he has a personal relationship with her and not Mary, so bringing in Mary would give David the leg up on them. At no point did Joe's own closeness to Eva (also in their alliance) come up as a concern for Shauhin, though. The next morning (Day 15), tree mail arrived to announce a "new era" classic where the players would have to compete in pairs decided upon prior to the challenge. While the group was hesitating to initiate the conversation on who would be paired with who, Joe smartly saw an opportunity to state the obvious -- that the challenge matters for their individual longevity in the game and they shouldn't worry about hurting feelings -- with the actual intention of encouraging people to team up with their allies so that he can "start picking apart alliances." His prompt triggered what he may have expected: Shauhin called Kamilla and David called Mary. Kyle tagged in with Chrissy next, highlighting not that they're close but instead continuing the cover on how close he and Kamilla are. Joe then paired off with Eva, leaving Mitch and Star as the final pair. For the players outside of the visible large alliance of "strong players," the pairing decisions underscored how much of a disadvantage they are already in within the tribe dynamics. Chrissy was frustrated that Joe and Eva became a pair because she thinks they're too powerful and Mitch was concerned that "all these new relationships" left him with a "big uphill battle" going forward. Mitch likened the experience to the new school year cafeteria politics of your friends deciding to eat lunch with their new friends, forgetting the friends they sat with last year (relating to the division of Kyle and David away from the original Civa players). Wanting to make a big move, Mitch brought Kamilla along for a conversation with David and Kyle where they pitched using David's relationship with Mary to form a new six that "for one vote" can turn the tides of the game and vote out an original Lagi player next. My Spidey senses are tingling in the worst way possible" ¡ª Mary Zheng In the immunity challenge, the pairs ran an obstacles in stages where two were eliminated after the first stage and then a third eliminated in the second stage.
