Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/25/2025): Asteroid Donaldjohanson
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 25 Asteroid Donaldjohanson Image Credit: Lucy/NASA/Goddard/SwRI/Johns Hopkins APL/NOIRLab Explanation: Main belt asteroid 52246 Donaldjohanson is about 8 kilometers long and 3.5 kilometers across. On April 20, this sharp close-up of the asteroid was captured at a distance of about 1100 kilometers by the Lucy spacecraft's long range camera during its second asteroid encounter. Named after American paleoanthropologist Donald Johanson, discoverer of the Lucy hominid fossil, the elongated asteroid was likely formed about 150 million years ago from a gentle collision of two smaller bodies creating its characteristic contact binary shape. Launched in October of 2021, the Lucy spacecraft will continue its travels through the main asteroid belt in 2025, but is on its way to explore Jupiter's swarm of Trojan asteroids. Lucy is expected to encounter its first Trojan asteroid target, 3548 Eurybates, in August 2027. Inspiring Quotes for Saturday, April 25, 2025
If there's love in a house, it's a palace for sure. Tom Waits Tom Waits is an American musician who cut his teeth in the 1970s singer-songwriter circuit. Waits’ expansive discography often centers around the darker underbelly of society: lost love, broken homes, drug use, runaways. The song this line comes from, “House Where Nobody Lives,” is no exception. The lyrics describe an abandoned house, contemplating the lives it once held as it now stands alone and choked with weeds. Waits uses the decrepit structure to illustrate the fickleness of worldly possessions. “Houses are just made of wood,” he sings in the final verse. “What makes a house grand ain’t the roof or the doors. If there’s love in a house, it’s a palace for sure.” Mary Live long and prosper

Dubbed the “world’s lightest Champagne bottle,” it weighs a mere 1.76 pounds (or 800 grams) and promises to reduce carbon emissions by 4% per bottle. ? Due to the huge number of bubbles in the beverage (around 1 million per flute, a scientist estimated in 2014), Champagne bottles require thick glass to avoid cracking under the gas’ pressure. But over the past 100 years or so, manufacturers have been able to decrease bottle sizes while keeping the glass intact. While a 1,250-gram bottle (around 2.75 pounds) was standard in the early 1900s, that figure was shaved down to 835 (around 1.84 pounds) by 2010, per Wine Industry Advisor. ? The new model has been in development since 2022, when Champagne Telmont — which boasts Leonardo DiCaprio as an investor — partnered with French glassmaker Verallia to design it in an effort to lessen the drink’s impact on the environment. On Tuesday, in honor of Earth Day, the bottle launched with Telmont’s Réserve Brut. Learn more about the innovation and see a blueprint of the bottle. ?
