News Articles Shop Account The Amazing Deeds of Alfred the Great and His Illustrious Family: England¡¯s First Anglo-Saxon Kings It takes something special to be rewarded with the title ¡®Great¡¯ in English history. It¡¯s true that if you were talking to a Dane, they might well argue that Cnut, also at one time a king of England, fully deserves the title. And others might throw continental rulers with names like Peter, Frederick and Catherine into the mix. Then there is also Charlemagne to consider, a name which literally translated means ¡®Charles the Great¡¯. But Alfred stands alone in English history, perhaps due to a sense of humility or a desire to avoid building up one of our own too much. We don¡¯t want anyone, even a king, getting above their station. So, does Alfred really deserve to be given such an illustrious title? Let¡¯s start with a quick resum¨¦ of the man who has earned himself a reputation as a disastrous cook and a man who single-handedly defeated the Vikings, fighting back from near oblivion when deserted by all and sundry before going on to be the first king of England. There¡¯s one or two doubtful facts there, some out and out myths and a few grains of truth. So, let¡¯s start by sifting the wheat from the chaff. What Alfred Was Not Let¡¯s begin with some of the dubious elements of the legend of Alfred. First of all, there¡¯s that story about burning the cakes. The story first appears a century or so after Alfred lived in a work known as the Life of St Neot. Therefore, there is no contemporary account mentioning it. That in itself poses a question. So too does the nature of the story, that of a man down on his luck, so much so that the king, supposedly the greatest man in the kingdom, finds himself berated by a peasant¡¯s wife, the humblest of the humble. This type of story is not unique: Robert the Bruce and spiders in caves anyone? So, the story is probably not true. Rather it is a story within a story highlighting how low Alfred had fallen and how high he would later fly. Then let¡¯s look a bit more at that story about the abandoned Alfred, hiding away in the remote fastness of the Isle of Athelney. Well, here we have a bit more to go on. Alfred was certainly forced to run for cover when caught by a surprise attack launched by a Viking army at Chippenham in January 878. And he did make his way to Athelney, protected by its remote and isolated position in the Somerset Levels. True so far. But was he alone and abandoned? Well, whilst he was hiding away on Athelney the Devon militia won a major victory over a Viking army on the shores of the Bristol Channel. And when shortly after he called up an army to take on the Vikings there was a significant response from the militias of Somerset, Wiltshire and Hampshire, so he was hardly alone whatever his biographer, Bishop Asser of Sherborne, might suggest. One element is easily dealt with. Alfred was never king of what we know as England. Rather he was the king of Wessex, which covered most of southern England, and he was also in practice the ruler of Mercia, which by his time covered the west Midlands. So, a reasonable part of modern England but far from all of it. Excluded were the east midlands and the north, areas that were still under Viking control in Alfred¡¯s time. Continue reading... Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/11/2025): The ISS Meets Venus
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 11 The ISS Meets Venus Image Credit & Copyright: A.J. Smadi Explanation: Made with a telescope shaded from bright sunlight by an umbrella, on April 5 a well-planned video captured a crescent Venus shining in clear daytime skies from Shoreline, Washington, USA at 11:57AM Pacific Time. It also caught the International Space Station in this single video frame. In close conjunction with the bright planet, the faint outline of the orbital outpost seen at a range of about 400 kilometers appears to be similar in size to the slender planetary crescent. Of course the ISS is much smaller than Venus. Now appearing as planet Earth's brilliant morning star and climbing above the eastern horizon in predawn skies, inner planet Venus was nearly 45 million kilometers from Shoreline. Inspiring Quotes for Friday, April 11, 2025
You make your life meaningful by applying meaning to it. Sheila Heti Sheila Heti is known for her introspective and experimental storytelling, especially in works such as ¡°Motherhood,¡± the critically acclaimed, semi-autobiographical novel that explores her decision on whether or not to have children. This quote echoes her writing¡¯s broader themes of self-exploration and purpose. Taken from an interview with author Natasha Lunn in Lunn¡¯s book ¡°Conversations on Love,¡± Heti suggests the fabled ¡°meaning of life¡± to be a nuanced concept ¡ª as she puts it, ¡°[Life is] not just inevitably meaningful as a result of the choices you¡¯ve made.¡± Much like her books challenge traditional narratives, Heti¡¯s quote upends the idea that meaning is inherent ¡ª we must instead each create it for ourselves. Fw: Top Chef Season 22 Episode 5 Recap: April 10, 2025
From: Sharon Pohlman Top Chef Season 22 Episode 5 Recap: While a former contestant returns, participants face a double elimination Top Chef Season 22 Episode 5 Recap: While a former contestant returns, participants face a double elimination Story by Gira Rathod Bravo aired Top Chef Season 22, Episode 5, on April 10, 2025. The latest episode featured a few twists and surprises. It would have no Quickfire challenge, but here's the catch: there was a double elimination. Participants were sent to different restaurants to try various cuisines in the latest episode. Later, their challenge was to prepare food for 150 people, and based on that, the winning team and elimination teams were chosen. Former participant and chef Sara Bradley joined the judges as they tasted the dishes prepared during the challenge. The fifth episode of Top Chef Season 22 started with Kristen Kish and Gail Simmons returning to the participants to deliver a twist. They revealed that there would be no Quickfire Challenge the next day. ?"Because there's no Quickfire tomorrow, you're all heading out to some of these neighborhoods. You'll get to know the food by learning firsthand on how they make it, and even help push out some orders," said Kish. Kristen then brought the knives, and by drawing them, the teams and their cuisines were determined. She also revealed that there would be a double elimination. The chefs would work at different restaurants, including Greek, Filipino, Indian, Thai, Portuguese, and Caribbean, for the next challenge. The participants' pairs were Kat-Corwin (Portuguese), Katianna-Cesar (Thai), Vinny-Lana (Indian), Shuai-Henry (Filipino), Paula-Massimo (Caribbean), and Bailey from Last Chance Kitchen, paired with Tristen (Greek), who was safe from elimination. Vinny and Lana were making Chicken Kamasutra at their assigned Indian restaurant. ?"We're helping make the chicken kamasutra. It seems like this is the dish that we're gonna really understand the most," said Lana. Top Chef's Paula and Massimo, at the Caribbean restaurant, worked on Oxtail Hash, consisting of shredded oxtail, brunch potato, oxtail gravy, poached eggs, and curry hollandaise. Cesar and Katiana, while making Thai dishes, worked on making flower dumplings from the Royal Thai Cuisine. Corwin and Kat, with their Portuguese, learned more about the Piri-piri hot sauce and how the Chef of the restaurant created it in the pan while cooking the dish. For their next assignment, Top Chef participants were assigned a task where they had to prepare dishes for 150 people. While returning from their assigned restaurants, participants talked about what they wanted to create. However, Vinny and Lana had separate ideas for the dish as they wanted to make different food items. ?"Vinny, he wants to do this hollandaise. I'm having a really tough time envisioning it. But he feels so strongly about it that I'm like, "Okay, yeah, let's go with it," confessed Lana. Top Chef participants were allowed to shop for 30 minutes with a $1000 budget to cook for 150 people. After getting all the raw materials, participants returned to the kitchen and raced to finish cooking. Participants then left the kitchen and reached the venue where they were supposed to serve the food. Soon, people started to arrive, and they saw various dishes prepared by the participants. It included grilled octopus, Thai-style beef, roasted port patty kare-kare, a cod and shrimp bomba, "Serving 150 people, the most difficult part is consistency. Every dish has to be the same. We're doing six plates at a time. We wanna keep everything still hot. We have a lot of garnishes. Hopefully, it doesn't feel like a long wait. "confessed Henry. Soon, the judges arrived along with a returning contestant, Sara Bradley (Chef/ proprietor, freight house). As the judges tested various dishes, they started with ?"Fresh bread cooked to the order is one of the most beautiful things in the world for me. Half of my day at the restaurant is spent making bread. The other half is looking at myself in the mirror, of course," said Massimo.Top Chef Se

The first chef in trouble is Brandon, who appears to be burning his pork chop on the stove. Next, Arnav realizes he left the oven door open and has no idea how long his meat has been roasting at room temperature. As time ticks down, all the chefs are able to finish their dishes with no major disasters. The following chefs cooked the best dishes in this second round and will continue their solo journey in the Middle Level Kitchen next week: Becca: Pan-roasted sea bass with shaved Brussels sprout salad Arnav: Sirloin of beef with mushroom grits and charred corn salsa Bobby: Pan-seared cod with roasted pancetta over cauliflower pureeThe Basement The four remaining chefs head down to the Basement Kitchen to cook like their lives depend on it. The platform descends with less appealing ingredients than before and Brandon is left with Spam. Everyone has to work with what they've got and save themselves with a winning dish cooked in just 20 minutes. The following chefs cooked the best dishes in this third round and will continue their solo journey in the Basement Kitchen next week: Brandon: Asian salad with pressed ham and a fried egg Ryan: Beef stroganoff Megan: Grilled romaine lettuce with crispy salmon and tomato relishNatalia, a 28-year-old home chef from Los Angeles, was eliminated this week despite receiving positive critiques for her chicken bits with creamy spinach and tomato ragu. As Natalia left, she said, "I live and breathe food, and I will continue to do so." Mary Live long and prosper

We don¡¯t often think of pups as needing transfusions the way humans sometimes do, but everything from injuries to blood clotting disorders can cause canines to require donated blood. And Sharwood, an adorable 8-year-old Gordon setter from England, has risen to the occasion more than any other, saving over 168 pups¡¯ lives and nabbing the Guinness World Record earlier this year for the most times a dog has given blood. ? On July 13, 2024, he completed his 40th donation through the Pet Blood Bank U.K., becoming the first canine in the country to reach that milestone. Sharwood¡¯s heroism also earned him the honor of being named a finalist for the 2025 Crufts Hero Award. While he ultimately didn¡¯t win, the blood bank¡¯s regional coordinator Adelle Fallows emphasized in Sharwood¡¯s nomination video just how essential his donations have been. ? ¡°Our donor dogs are really important,¡± said Fallows. ¡°They come along, they donate blood for those dogs that are in need. They may have been hit by a car, they may have major blood loss, and also have conditions such as immune-mediated hemolytic anemia, where they need blood very urgently.¡± ? ?Watch the nomination video and read more about Sharwood in honor of National Pet Day today. Fw: Wordsmith (4/11/2025): A.Word.A.Day -- Botany Bay
Wordsmith.orgThe magic of words MooT, MetaMooT, and UltiMooT - the semantics & etymology trilogy The world's toughest language game gets even tougher. mootgame.com Sponsor's message Apr 11, 2025 This week¡¯s theme Toponyms This week¡¯s words alsatia Carthaginian peace Cathay siberianize Botany Bay Black-eyed Sue and Sweet Poll of Plymouth taking leave of their lovers who are going to Botany Bay Art: Robert Sayer & Co, 1792 A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg Botany Bay PRONUNCIATION: (BOT-uh-nee BAY) MEANING: noun: A place of exile, punishment, or hard labor. ETYMOLOGY: After Botany Bay, south of Sydney, Australia. Earliest documented use: 1789. NOTES: In 1770 Captain James Cook landed on the southeast coast of Australia. Among his crew were two botanists who were so impressed by the diversity of plant life, they dubbed the area Botany Bay. Talk about putting down roots! When the British government sent its first fleet of convicts to colonize Australia in 1787, Botany Bay was their original destination. However, upon arrival, they found the land less than ideal for settlement (not exactly the Garden of Eden), so they moved a bit north to Sydney Cove. Still, the name Botany Bay stuck as shorthand for exile. For example, Worcester College at Oxford earned the nickname Botany Bay because it lay on the remote edge of London. USAGE: ¡°Corrupt companies, incompetent governmental agencies, and gutless politicians are the real culprits. There must be a Botany Bay where these characters can be exiled.¡± Jim Dooley; For Whom Amnesty Tolls; The News Press (Fort Myers, Florida); Jul 17, 2007. A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: No greater mistake can be made than to think that our institutions are fixed or may not be changed for the worse. ... Increasing prosperity tends to breed indifference and to corrupt moral soundness. Glaring inequalities in condition create discontent and strain the democratic relation. The vicious are the willing, and the ignorant are unconscious instruments of political artifice. Selfishness and demagoguery take advantage of liberty. The selfish hand constantly seeks to control government, and every increase of governmental power, even to meet just needs, furnishes opportunity for abuse and stimulates the effort to bend it to improper uses. ... The peril of this nation is not in any foreign foe! We, the people, are its power, its peril, and its hope! -Charles Evans Hughes, jurist and statesman (11 Apr 1862-1948) Got a comment?
