Sunday Edition ? April 13, 2025 SUPPORTED BY Cultivating friendships is key to living a happy life, whether that means having a select few ride-or-dies or collecting more pals than you can count. Of course, as life progresses and circumstances change, it’s natural to fall out of touch with certain friends. But what might feel less natural these days is making new ones. One common suggestion is to sign up for social activities, like team sports or art classes. To investigate how well that works, BBC reporter Molly Gorman tested out four popular ways of meeting people, evaluating each for its friendship-forming potential and science-backed benefits — and she shares a helpful icebreaker as a bonus. ? ?— the Nice News team Featured Story Why Artist Austin Kleon Thinks the Word “Amateur” Needs a Rebrand cienpies/ iStock If there’s one thing Austin Kleon loves, it’s a list. “I always make the joke that it was good enough for Moses, so it’s good enough for me,” he tells Nice News. Here’s a selection from the responses. My favorite place to visit is Hawaii. I have been there many times over the years because it is truly paradise. We are planning a honeymoon there now! -Janice A Hiley, Rolling Prairie, Indiana (jan janhiley.com) I’m writing now from Greece, my sanctuary from the world that’s too much with us. Particularly now, as chaos threatens to engulf the United States. The area called Mani, on the Peloponnesus, is as far away from the present as one can get. I’ll turn 87 in a few weeks and have been coming here for more than 50 years. -Judy Tinelli, Easton, Maryland (judytinelli hotmail.com) My favorite place to visit is Philmont Scout Ranch in Northeastern New Mexico. Took my first backpacking trip there in 1969, then spent four summers working on the staff. I still consider that my best job ever. A favorite statement of fellow staff alumni is “I Wanna Go Back to Philmont.” If you see a mysterious vanity license plate IWGBTP you know that car is being driven by a current or former Philmont staffer. -Steve Harmony, Mancos, Colorado (steveharmo gmail.com) Besides NZ, a place I would like to go back to is Prague. I took some advice and visited the Orloj, or Prague Astronomical Clock early in the morning so I got a great view of it. We had a cab driver give us a tour and it was worth it. We ate in one of the oldest restaurants in Prague, established in the 1500s. Its walls and ceilings were decorated with paintings done by artists who painted in return for meals. Really, I can’t think of a location in the world that I have visited which I would not like to return to just to see it in more detail. There are always pleasant surprises when I am open to them. -Que Areste Estavia, Seattle, Washington (queness66 gmail.com) My wife is Portuguese, so twice a year (spring and late summer) we go visit her family. I know in the last few years Portugal has gotten very trendy, but it really is a great place. Especially northern Portugal, which sometimes gets short shrift compared to the south. -Deirdre Goldsworth, Denver, Colorado (goldsworth hotmail.com) A favorite place for my spouse and me to vacay is Yellowstone National Park. Having been there numerous times before frees us to explore new areas of it. Our favorite activity is hiking in the backcountry. -David R. Jennys, Mitchell, South Dakota (drjennys live.com) One favorite was a condo building on Maui, the other a campsite on a lake in remote northern California. I liked going to the same place. It was familiar so it eliminated a day of getting to know what’s what, where, how etc. leaving more time to start having fun or relaxing right away. It also expanded on the anticipatory period, as there was less worry about unexpected aspects and more anticipating good times. -Betsy Wilson, El Segundo, California (w_betsy hotmail.com) Museum of Natural History in NYC, and specifically the Gems and Minerals exhibit. Yet beneath the grandeur lies another narrative, carved into ruins and scattered across forgotten landscapes: a story of collapse. From Egypt’s pyramid builders to the engineers of the Indus Valley, from Mesopotamian kings to the seafaring Minoans and the dynasties of ancient China, history is marked not only by achievement but by unravelling. Time and again, civilizations rose with dazzling promise, only to falter under the weight of environmental shifts, internal strife, and mounting pressures. Today, archaeology and climate science reveal just how entwined human decisions and natural forces have always been — and how familiar these ancient tipping points feel. In an era defined by climate crisis, polarization, and systemic strain, the echoes of past collapses grow louder. This issue invites you to confront a provocative question: are we so different from those who came before us? The past may be a ruin, but it is also a mirror. Fw: Jesus Leads Us To Redemption Via The Cross
From: Gregory Fry Today's Scripture--for what many churches call "Palm Sunday" or "Passion Sunday"--is by far the longest of any of the Sunday Gospel readings throughout the year. Perhaps if this is read in your place of worship this lengthy reading would probably be divided into parts, perhaps with a narrator reciting the descriptive text, one or two reciting the words of Jesus and those He spoke with, and the congregation reciting the words of the crowd. However you may wish to parse this lengthy text is of course up to you, but please try to let the words sink in--the only way to the resurrection that we will celebrate next Sunday is via the crucifixion. Thank you and may God bless you! ** When the hour had come, He sat down with the twelve apostles. He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer, for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God." He received a cup, and when He had given thanks, He said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves, for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until the Kingdom of God comes." He took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you. Do this in memory of Me." Likewise, He took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the New Covenant in My blood, which will be poured out for you." "But behold, the hand of him who betrays Me is with Me on the table. The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom He is betrayed!" They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing. There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest. He said to them, "The kings of the nations lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.' But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves. For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves. But you are those who have continued with Me in My trials. I confer on you a kingdom, even as My Father conferred on Me, that you may eat and drink at My table in My Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel." The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat, but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned back again, strengthen your brothers." Peter said to Him, "Lord, I am ready to go with You both to prison and to death!" He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know Me three times." He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing." Then He said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword. For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in Me: 'He was counted with transgressors.' For that which concerns Me has an end." They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." But He said to them, "That is enough." He came out, and went, as His custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed Him. When He was at the place, He said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation." He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and He knelt down and prayed, saying, "Father, if You are willing, remove this cup from Me. Nevertheless, not My will, but Yours, be done." An angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him. Being in agony He prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground. When He rose up from His prayer, He came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief, and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter

Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/12/2025): Moon Near the Edge
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 12 Moon Near the Edge Image Credit & Copyright: Jordi Coy Explanation: Most of us watch the Moon at night. But the Moon spends nearly as many daylight hours above our horizon, though in bright daytime skies the lunar disk looks pale and can be a little harder to see. Of course in daytime skies the Moon also appears to cycle through its phases, shining by reflected sunlight as it orbits our fair planet. For daytime moonwatchers, the Moon is probably easier to spot when the visible sunlit portion of the lunar disk is large and waxing following first quarter or waning approaching its third quarter phase. And though it might look unusual, a daytime moon is often seen even in urban skies. Captured here in a telephoto snapshot taken on March 12, a waxing daytime Moon is aligned near the edge of a popular observation deck that overlooks New York City's borough of Manahattan.
