Inspiring Quotes for Thursday, April 10, 2025
In all our searching, the only thing we’ve found that makes the emptiness bearable is each other. Carl Sagan Carl Sagan was one of the greatest science communicators of the last century. A planetary scientist and astrophysicist, he had a gift for explaining complex scientific concepts to the general public. He was also acutely aware of humanity’s place in the universe. It was Sagan who suggested to NASA that the Voyager 1 space probe should turn its camera around to snap one last photo of Earth before it sped away into interstellar space, from a distance of 3.7 billion miles away. The resulting photo, which shows the Earth as a tiny speck against the vastness of space, is known as the “Pale Blue Dot.” The image had little scientific value, but its significance was profound: It gave humans a perspective of our world out there in the vast emptiness — and us, as Sagan put it, as “momentary masters of a fraction of a dot.” Mary Live long and prosper

There May Be Benefits to Keeping It There, Study Finds recep-bg/ iStock Mind-wandering tends to get a bad rap, especially in an educational context. A recent study, however, found that letting your mind drift might not be harmful when it comes to learning a new task — in fact, it may even be helpful. ? Researchers in Hungary fitted 37 people with scalp electrodes to monitor their brain activity. Participants were then given an exercise that involved watching an arrow on a TV screen and hitting a key on a keyboard to indicate what direction it went in, per Australia’s ABC News. Throughout the activity, they were intermittently asked three questions about their attentiveness: if their mind had wandered, if they’d been thinking about anything at all, or if they had been focused on the task. ? Using the data from the electrodes and the participant responses, the scientists determined if their attention had wandered and evaluated whether it affected their ability to complete the task. They found that “mind-wandering while doing the task did not worsen performance, and in some cases even enhanced learning,” per a news release. Study authors also noted an association between a wandering mind and probabilistic learning, meaning participants used prior experience to assess the likelihood of something happening. ? This study adds to research that shows daydreaming can help us solve problems and reach our goals — and suggests that we may need to carve out more time for passive learning, said co-author Péter Simor: “As our brain needs sleep, maybe we also need passive ways of learning, or ‘wakeful rest,’ to recover from tasks that require your brain to be online and engaged.” Together With StorEn This Safer, Longer-Lasting Battery Could Be the Next Energy Disruptor For years, lithium batteries have powered homes and devices, but their drawbacks are hard to ignore: fire risks, short li

Fw: Ancient Origins Premium Preview (April 9)
News Articles Shop Account The Rise of Robert Devereux, the Second Earl of Essex and Future Favorite of Queen Elizabeth I: 1586–1587 Robert Devereux, who would become the 2nd Earl of Essex and Queen Elizabeth I’s last favourite, was born on 10th November 1565 in the manor house at Netherwood near Bromyard, in Herefordshire. His life was to be short and turbulent. He would rise in the queen’s favour, triumphing over all his enemies, but his relationship with Elizabeth would always be fractious. He sought glory and engaged in military action in the Netherlands, France, Cadiz, the Azores and Ireland. After developing an intelligence network to rival the Cecils, he was a key player in the political life of the Elizabethan court. But as he rose to the heights of his ambition, he would also fall in devastating circumstances all of his own making. Europe’s Great Religious Divide Increasing tensions across Europe made England fearful of a Spanish invasion. The Spanish Hapsburg Empire, under the rule of Phillip II, was trying to suppress Protestantism especially in the United Provinces where the Dutch were fighting for their independence. Elizabeth I had a long history with Phillip, who had been married to her older sister Mary. Once their relationship had been amicable enough – he had even supported her against her sister – but now she was queen, Philip’s machinations were a threat. Elizabeth had inherited a kingdom that had been divided over religion for many years. Her reign followed her father’s break with Rome, her brother’s fervent Protestantism and her sister’s return to Catholicism. In order to bring peace to her realm Elizabeth and her councillors came up with the Religious Settlement. In 1559 the Act of Uniformity established The Book of Common Prayer and the Act of Supremacy underlined her role as supreme governor of the English church. A further act in 1563 laid out the doctrine of the Church of England. England would be protestant but Catholics would be tolerated. Pope Pius V had excommunicated Elizabeth in 1570 as ‘the number of the ungodly hath gotten such power, there is now no place left in the whole World which they have not assayed to corrupt with their most wicked Doctrines: Amongst others, Elizabeth, the pretended Queen of England, a Slave of Wickedness, lending thereunto her helping hand, with whom, as in a Sanctuary, the most pernicious of all men have found a Refuge.’ But the papal bull also gave Catholics the order not to obey her on penalty of excommunication. It was supposed to support the nobles who had remained true to the old faith but Philip II, defender of the faith in Catholic Europe, believed the only way for England to return to the true religion would be by a full scale assault.
