All About the Home Design Trend miljko/Getty Images We have rooms for sleeping, cooking, and lounging, and now more people are carving out spaces in their homes for well-being, too. Some refer to them as “wellness rooms” or “rest corners,” but whatever you call them, they’re places of serenity for reading, practicing yoga, meditating, crafting, playing music, puzzling, or doing whatever self-care ritual speaks to you. ? “Spaces for wellness, retreat, and recharging are all really popular right now,” Gonzalo Bueno, who owns Dallas-based interior design firm Ten Plus Three, told the Associated Press. Some examples he cited include an outdoor Zen garden, a meditation space with a soaking tub, and music rooms. But what all these areas have in common — whether they’re big rooms for jamming out or introvert nooks for alone time — is the intention to use them for unwinding and putting the world on pause for a while. ? The important thing is to feel attuned to yourself, said Jack Ovadia, who owns a design firm in New York. “A wellness room should be a space where the outside world dissolves; no background noise, no movement beyond your own. This is where you go to let go; to drop into something quieter, something deeper.” Get inspiration to create your own wellness room — or corner. Fw: Wordsmith (4/07/2025): A.Word.A.Day -- Alsatia
Wordsmith.orgThe magic of words MooT - the Semantics and Etymology game The world's toughest language game. mootgame.com How to sponsor? Apr 7, 2025 This week’s theme Toponyms This week’s words alsatia Map: Google Maps Previous week’s theme Tools and devices that became metaphors A.Word.A.Day with Anu Garg Everyone likes going places. One might call it a vacation, another a holiday, and some just call it escaping the inbox. But what if your travel plans were dictated by the _literal_ meaning of the word? Here’s what your itinerary would look like, etymologically speaking: journey: A day trip (from French jour: day). About 20 miles max in those days travel: Torture (Latin trepaliare: to torture). Because travel in those days wasn’t exactly a trip to Disneyland holiday: Perhaps a pilgrimage, because holiday is, literally, holy day. Well, you could worship the sun pilgrimage: A foreign trip (Latin peregrinus: foreign) visit: Go see a place (Latin videre: to see). So if you attend a concert, would that be an audit? (Latin audire: to hear) trip: Dancing in the backyard (Old French triper: to hop, skip, leap, dance) vacation: Vacate the home? Also, the wallet? (Latin vacare: to be empty) tour: Spinning in circles? (Greek tornos: lathe) Good thing etymology isn’t destiny. A word is not limited to its roots or what it meant originally. This week we’re taking you on a, well, let’s call it a jaunt (origin unknown). We’ll explore places, far and wide, that have become metaphors in the English language. Such words are also called toponyms, from Greek topo- (place) + -nym (name). What are your favorite places to visit, whether down the road or across the globe? Do you have a location that you return to again and again? Why? Tell us via our website or email us at words@.... Include your home base (city, state). And wherever you go, may your journey be less “trepaliare” and more “trip”! alsatia PRONUNCIATION: (al-SAY-shuh) MEANING: noun 1. A sanctuary. 2. A lawless place. ETYMOLOGY: After Alsatia, an area north of River Thames in London, once out of the reach of law. Earliest documented use: 1676. NOTES: Once upon a Thames, Alsatia was a holy hideaway: a monastery-turned-sanctuary (Whitefriars) north of the river in London. But what began as a sacred refuge slowly turned into a safe haven for debtors, criminals, and general ne’er-do-wells. The name Alsatia is a Latinized nod to Alsace, a border region in France that once had a similarly lawless reputation thanks to the centuries of tug-of-war between France and German states. One might say it was a region that couldn’t decide whether to say bonjour or guten tag, so it said neither and punched you in the face. By the late 1600s, the term Alsatia had morphed into a metaphor for any unruly place where laws were more like suggestions and sanctuary came with a side of shenanigans. USAGE: “‘[The] state has set out to create an Alsatia -- a region of executive action free of judicial oversight,’ said Lord Justice Sedley.” Paul Lashmar; Law Lords Slam Crime Agency for Freezing UMBS Payments; The Independent on Sunday (London, UK); May 27, 2007. “Maggie always appeared in the most amiable light at her aunt Moss’s; it was her Alsatia, where she was out of the reach of law.” George Eliot; The Mill on the Floss; William Blackwood and Sons; 1860. Fw: American Idol’ showstoppers round sends 4 contestants straight into the Top 24-April 6, 2025
From: Sharon Pohlman So tonight, was a wrap- of those we heard- are you in agreement who stayed and who left? Monday night Jelly Roll joins the group, and the contestants will sing with a partner ‘The greatest performance I have ever seen’: ‘American Idol’ showstoppers round sends 4 contestants straight into the Top 24 Denton Davidson Reality TV April 6, 2025 Tonight on American Idol — the top 62 contestants continued their Hollywood Week experience in the Showstoppers Round, where they took the stage once more to prove they've got the vocal prowess and charisma to become America's next superstar. Like last week's Idol Arena, each contestant performed in front of judges Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie and then had to wait until the end of the night to find out who advanced in the competition. Unlike last week, they got zero feedback. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, April 6 (8 p.m. ET/PT) with Ryan Seacrest hosting. There were certainly plenty of showstoppers throughout the night, but the judges all agreed that the best was saved for last. Platinum Ticket winner Canaan James Hill was feeling the pressure as he waited to hit the stage, but the 17-year-old didn't show it when he belted out Marvin Sapp's "I Never Would Have Made It." "I'm really a churchy kid," Canaan said in his intro package. "I started singing in church around six or seven. My mother's camera roll is full of pictures and videos of me on the pulpit singing and preaching." As he rehearsed for this round, the teenager revealed, "I've performed with a band two or three times, so being on this stage and being able to have this band is something that I've always dreamed of. I'm ready to go out there and give it my all — as I do when I'm singing in the shower. I always imagine that I have a band and I have background vocals. I just go for everything that I have. Having the Platinum Ticket adds a lot of pressure. I do feel that there is an expectation that I have to make it far in this competition, and that's what I plan on doing — holding up that title and hopefully winning the whole thing and taking this all home." Canaan lived up to the Platinum Ticket hype. Just notes into his powerful performance, the judges — and the entire audience in attendance — were already on their feet. "Seventeen!" Carrie screamed in astonishment as Canaan continued belting. "He is one of the best singers I have ever seen," Luke replied. Following the vocal tour de force, Luke rushed the stage to hug the youngster as Lionel said, "That was the greatest performance I have ever seen." At the conclusion of the Showstoppers Round, the judges advanced the four best of the night — Canaan, Gabby Samone, Mattie Pruitt, and Zaylie Windsor — into the Top 24. Next, 16 contestants were cut from the competition. As for the remaining 42 hopefuls in limbo? They'll duke it out head-to-head on Monday night for the final 20 spots in the Top 24. See some of the night's best performances (and notable eliminated contestants) below. Featured Performances (Advanced) Amanda Barise Age: 26 Hometown: Manhattan, N.Y. Fw: Generous help to a senior dealing with dangerous heat!
From: Gregory Fry It’s been a rough couple of weeks … 2 hurricanes slammed the continental U.S., another even stronger one devastated the archipelago of Puerto Rico. Four major earthquakes have hit Mexico so far this month. Political upheaval and controversy reigned, not only here in the U.S. but around the globe. We all need to look to something positive, look at those people who thumb their noses at trouble and just roll up their sleeves and get down to the business of helping others. Today’s ‘good people’ are those who take the meaning of the word ‘community’ seriously, who believe that we are all in this together and we need to set aside differences to help one another. Julius Hatley is 95-years-young, a World War II veteran, and lives alone in Ft. Worth, Texas. At the beginning of summer, back in June, Mr. Hatley’s central air-conditioning as well as a smaller window unit both went caput, so Mr. Hatley took to sitting out on his porch most of the time, for inside the house was unbearable. Finally, one day Mr. Hatley knew he had to do something … summer was only beginning and he was already miserable. But what to do? So, the only thing he could think of was to call 911, which is what he did. “This wasn’t a regular 911 call,” according to Fort Worth Police Officer William Margolis. “It was what you’d label ‘low priority’ because we’re not AC techs.” I have to wonder if many police departments would have just written it off as a ‘no-priority’ call? But not these guys. Officer Margolis and his partner, Christopher Weir, after responding to a few higher priority calls that morning, went to check on Mr. Hatley. They found that he had no working air-conditioner, and at 8:30 a.m., the temperature inside his house was already 85° (F), 29.4° (C). Now these guys were under no obligation, but out of the goodness of their hearts, they went to Home Depot to buy Mr. Hatley a window unit to replace his broken one. And, just as these things so often do, their effort gained momentum when they explained to the staff at Home Depot what they were doing. Staff and management pooled their available cash and contributed $150 toward the air conditioner! Later that day, Officer Weir returned to Hatley’s home with another Ft. Worth Officer, Steven Rebrovich, and they installed the unit. Mr. Hatley was appreciative and excited beyond words, but the story doesn’t stop there. Once the story hit the news, the community came together in the spirit of … community! An air conditioning company replaced his central air free of charge, and others took care of replacing his windows and re-painting his house! Other members of the community check on Mr. Hatley and deliver groceries every week! This, friends, is what being a community is about. This is what being a human is all about. Let us all give two thumbs up to Officers Weir and Margolis, certainly, but to ALL those who have come to help Mr. Hatley! Mary Live long and prosper

Fw: Astronomy Picture of the Day (4/06/2025): Moonquakes Surprisingly Common
Astronomy Picture of the Day Discover the cosmos! Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer. 2025 April 6 Moonquakes Surprisingly Common Image Credit: NASA, Apollo 11 Crew Explanation: Why are there so many moonquakes? Analyses of seismometers left on the moon during the Apollo moon landings reveal a surprising number of moonquakes occurring within 100 kilometers of the surface. In fact, 62 moonquakes were detected in data recorded between 1972 and 1977. Many of these moonquakes are not only strong enough to move furniture in a lunar apartment, but the stiff rock of the moon continues to vibrate for many minutes, significantly longer than the softer rock earthquakes on Earth. The cause of the moonquakes remains unknown, but a leading hypothesis include tidal gravity from -- and relative heating by -- our Earth. Regardless of the source, future moon dwellings need to be built to withstand the frequent shakings.
